Welcome to our Tech Function Exec Appointment Trends & Open Roles for the - 45 days ended June 15th 2016. The roles covered here:   heads of technology, which include CTOs, CIOs, Tech & Ops, CISOs, Cyber and related.

By the numbers, overall:
  • Total Tech Exec Roles Open: 76
  • New Tech Exec Appointments: 128 (19 women or 14.9%, 109 men)
Heads of Technology Appointed are more technical, more senior and more specialized

The role of the chief technologist is evolving drastically and takes on a variety of combinations. The appointments (128) include:

  • 49 CTOs, including two at the EVP Level & one serving that role but whose title is Chief Transformation Officer; and one CTO and COO
  • 36 CIOs, including 7 with SVP titles, and two group CIOs. One also having government relations. 2 also with CISO in their titles.
  • 5 Tech & Ops combinations
  • 3 Technology & Product combinations – including the former CTO at Comcast getting promoted to President, Tech & Product, another President at Baker Hughes, and Product & IT at BlueStar Sports.
  • 6 Digital Officers with tech backgrounds, EVP Chief Digital Officer (former CIO), SVP Operations & Support of Digital, SVP & Head of digital Banking, GM Digital Services (innovation/CIO), SVP, ICT and Digitiation.
  • 8 CISOs & Related: including titles like CISO, Cyber Security, Chief Risk Officer (with IT). The two already counted as CIO and CISO are not in this 8.
  • 12 Roles with Engineering in the title
  • One head of infrastructure (data centers)

Only one role had data as its main function, and one other (mostly engineering) also had responsibility for building data products.

With the increasing complexity of systems, the emergence of much more powerful technology based businesses, we believe that one will see the following”

  • Highly technical CTOs or CIOs with deep technical credentials at the top of the chain, that can deliver on increasingly complex environments. Businesses cannot afford to not get this right and deliver on complex SLAs and other regulatory requirements.  At the same time, these individuals must be keenly aware of the business requirements.
  • The integration & eventual merging of “application development” and engineering. IT and product are becoming deeply intertwined.
  • Information Security, Information Risk Management, and CyberSecurity are increasing in complexity and is becoming a function with experts in its own right, at the top of the chain. I have had discussions with senior board members on this topic, who believe that in addition to Information Security, cyber credentials and connections with the Federal & other agencies is absolutely essential. Protecting your business not only requires technical prowness but also deep connections with others. This is an area where competitors co-operate, for the good of us all.

We expect that we will see more infrastructure and data center experts as well as data and data analytics / science experts being announced.

In terms of the 76 Open Roles, the functional breakdown is as follows:

  • 37 CIO roles
  • 25 CTOs
  • 12 CISOs
  • 2 Tech & Ops

We have also seen four other resignations, where it is unclear whether a successor candidate is sought after: one for tech & ops (Zurich); two CTOs (Verifone and Service Source) and one CIO (Woolworth’s).
