Dell Services Names Chief Medical Officer

Dell Services, the IT services and consulting arm of Dell, has named Nick van Terheyden, M.D., as its Chief Medical Officer of Dell Healthcare & Life Sciences. Terheyden is the former Chief Medical Information Officer at Nuance Communications, and also has served at Philips Healthcare, Mount Sinai Medical Center, KPMG, Healthcare International and Shell. Dr. Terheyden will focus on providing strategic direction for Dell Services and its work with healthcare organizations, medical professionals and patients.

Orion Health Promotes Internal Clinical Leader as New Chief Nursing Officer for North America

Orion Health, the provider of fully integrated modern healthcare software, has promoted Cheryl McKay, PhD, RN, to Chief Nursing Officer of North America. Previously, Dr. McKay held the position of Nurse Executive at Orion Health, responsible for the successful development and implementation of the company's Healthier Populations suite of products. Prior to joining Orion Health, she served as VP of Care Coordination at Net.Orange, a NantHealth Company, and Chief Clinical Officer at LifeCare Hospitals.

TELUS Ventures Backed PatientSafe Solutions Names CFO

PatientSafe Solutions, which develops mobile healthcare software, named Balaji Sekar as its CFO. Sekar was most recently interim CFO for Sutherland Global Services, and had worked as CFO of Sutherland Healthcare Solutions. PatientSafe is venture backed by TELUS Ventures.

T-System Promotes Healthcare Tech Veteran to CTO

T-System, a healthcare IT Company focused on optimizing emergency medicine and urgent care, promoted Hank Hikspoors as the company’s CTO. Hikspoors, formerly the director of product development for T-System’s emergency department information system, EV™, will lead the alignment of technology across the company’s entire solution portfolio.

Most recently, he led the technical delivery and deployment of T-System’s new digital documentation technology for urgent care centers, T-Sheets® Digital. Hikspoors currently holds a U.S. patent for a method, system and computer-readable medium for resource-based route selection and has a patent pending for T-System’s ICD-10 documentation feedback schema.

Not-For-Profit Health System Texas Health Resources Appoints CIO

Texas Health Resources named Joey Sudomir, M.S., CHCIO, as SVP, Innovative Technology Solutions (ITS), and CIO. Sudomir joined Texas Health as VP, IT operations, in 2013 and was named deputy CIO in 2014. He joined Texas Health Partners in 2008 as VP of IT, leading IT-related clinical transformation efforts for Texas Health’s joint ventures. Before joining Texas Health, Sudomir managed operational ownership for IT at more than 60 hospitals for a nationally known company that operates hospitals across the country.

SGR Technology Appoints CMIO from Massachusetts General Hospital's Lab of Computer Sciences

Adrian Zai MD, PhD, MPH has been named CMIO at SGR Technology, a developer of data collection and analysis tools. Zai is former clinical director of population informatics at Massachusetts General Hospital's Lab of Computer Sciences. He is a former Instructor in Medicine of Harvard Medical School.

Valence Health Announces Changes to Senior Leadership Team

Valence Health, the provider of clinical integration, population health and value-based care solutions and services, appointed R. Andrew Eckert as CEO. Previously, Eckert served as the CEO of numerous private and public companies including TriZetto, Eclipsys, CRC Health and ADAC Laboratories.

Eckert replaces Phil Kamp, who has served as CEO since founding Valence Health in 1996. Kamp will step into a new role as Chief Strategy Officer, where he will focus on working with clients to develop and implement their value-based strategies and lead Valence Health’s efforts in developing new products and services.

Co-founder Todd Stockard will remain the company’s President, with a focus on operations and assisting existing clients who are pursuing the most advanced forms of value-based care. All three will be members of Valence Health’s Board of Directors.

Practice Fusion Makes Board and Executive Appointments from Technology and Health Sectors

Practice Fusion, the leading cloud-based electronic health record (EHR) platform for doctors and patients, appointed Alan Black, 55, to board. The company also hired four new members to its leadership team: Matt Ackley as Chief Marketing Officer; Dorothy Gemmell as SVP, Life Science Practice and Strategic Partnerships; Tim Rauschenbach as VP, Customer Service and Support; and Dave Caldwell as SVP, Enterprise Solutions. The appointments will further strengthen Practice Fusion’s continued growth and forward momentum for achieving its long-term business plans.

Alan Black is the current CFO of Zendesk and previously served as the CEO of Intelliden, a software company that was acquired by IBM in January 2010. 

Matt Ackley joins from Marin Software, a leading cross-channel performance advertising cloud platform for advertisers and agencies, where he served as SVP for product and as chief marketing officer.  Ackley previously served as eBay’s VP of advertising and internet marketing for five years as well as serving as Google’s managing director of media and platforms market development for two years. 

Dorothy Gemmell joins after previously serving as the president of Havas Life New York, an advertising agency focused on serving health and wellness clients.  She also served as SVP, for sales and operations for WebMD, where she spent thirteen years building that company’s revenue generating teams.  Prior to WebMD, Gemmell spent ten years in sales, sales leadership, and marketing roles at Pharmacia (now Pfizer). 

Tim Rauschenbach joins from United Health Group, where he served as its director of customer service.  Prior to that, Rauschenbach served as the global VP for customer service at Amazon. 

Dave Caldwell joins from Transcend Insights, a subsidiary of Humana, where he served as that company’s VP of sales and marketing.  During his career, Caldwell has led highly successful sales, marketing, and client service organizations for three Fortune 500 companies, as well as established and grown the commercial operations for two emerging healthcare technology firms.  He has held executive roles with Thermo Fisher Scientific, Quest Diagnostics, Baxter Healthcare, and Focus Diagnostics. 

Health Care Software Company Intermedix Names CIO from Verisk Health

Jack Hemmert has been appointed as the first CIO of Intermedix, provider of sales management and analytics software for health-care providers, corporations and government agencies. Hemmert is former CIO of Verisk Health. Before that, he worked as a software development manager for the Insurance Services Office, a Verisk Analytics subsidiary.

Health IT Accelerator DreamIt Health Sees Leadership Changes

Elliot Menschik has left his managing director role at DreamIt Health, the DreamIt Ventures health IT accelerator he founded. Steve Barsh, DreamIt’s former managing partner, will run DreamIt Health and has been named managing partner. Barsh was most recently working as an advisor to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), focused on entrepreneurship and innovation.

Former DreamIt Ventures Philly managing partner Patrick FitzGerald also recently left DreamIt to lead entrepreneurship at CHOP.

Cloud-Based Telemedicine Service Provider Appoints Benefits Industry Veteran to Drive Market Penetration, a cloud-based telemedicine service provider, has named Wayne Orchard as the new VP of Strategic Partnerships. Orchard is former VP of vendor relationships at New Benefits, a Texas-based insurer, where he served as the single point of contact for managing client and partner relations.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. She also has been a featured speaker on leadership at numerous conferences and at Columbia University's MBA program.

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
