Welcome to our monthly update on CIO & Other Tech Roles Turnover. This newsletter covers Tech function roles, including CIOs, CTOs, CISOs, and Head of Tech & Ops, in the 56 days ended January 4th, 2015.

In December 2014, C-level turnover increased 1% from a year earlier; while for November 2014 it increased by 5%. The month to month change from November 2014 to December 2014 saw C-level changes increasing by 10%, while October 2014 to November 2014 saw a decline of 7%. (Source: Liberum)

Top Industry sectors for overall C-Suite turnover in December, according to the same source, are: Drugs/Biotech, Energy, Banking and Metals/Mining.

Total Number of Open Roles: 30   

Newly Opened Roles: Eight – Beyondsoft, MarkLogic (2), and Sportvision (CA), RedFin Network (FL), UMass Boston (MA), Nike (OR), State of Texas (TX), Standard Chartered (U.K).

New Appointments: 59

Sources of Appointments: 51 were External appointments, and eight were internal promotions.

October 2014 - The Manatee County School District's chief information and technology officer Mike Borysiewicz has resigned. The district will begin to look for a replacement for the position and Deputy Superintendent of Operations Don Hall will cover Borysiewicz's duties until a replacement is found.

Jen Chao, the company’s Director of Engineering, will be in charge of its San Francisco office.

August 2014 - Brian Stevens, 50, stepped down as EVP and CTO of Red Hat to join Google as VP, Cloud Platforms. In the interim, the office of the CTO will be managed by Paul Cormier, President of products and technologies at Red Hat.

December 2014 - Anthony Watson, global CIO at Nike, has left the company for personal reasons. COO Eric Sprunk will lead Nike’s technology organization while the company searches for a replacement.

September 2014 - CIO and EVP Dan Drawbaugh has decided to step down to pursue other professional interests. Ed McCallister, presently SVP, Enterprise Applications & Business Services, Information Services Division, will serve as interim CIO.

May 2014 - Deputy CIO David DeVries has assumed the role of acting CIO at the Defense Department. DeVries will stay on until the agency finds a permanent replacement for the post, which Teri Takai vacated.

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) is a Cabinet-level department concerned with the United States' policies regarding energy and safety in handling nuclear material.

August 2014 - Robert Brese will leave his post at the Energy Department as CIO on Sept. 5, Federal News Radio reported. The station reports that deputy DOE CIO Dan Adcock will succeed Brese on an interim basis.

USA - Office of E-Government and Information Technology, Washington D.C.      Revenues: NA

The Office of E-Government and Information Technology (E-Gov), headed by the Federal Government’s CIO, develops and provides direction in the use of Internet-based technologies to make it easier for citizens and businesses to interact with the Federal Government, save taxpayer dollars, and streamline citizen participation. 

October 2014 - U.S. CIO Steven VanRoekel is stepping down from his job to join the United States Agency for International Development to help use technology to fight the Ebola virus. Lisa Schlosser, one of VanRoekel’s deputies, will oversee the Office of E-Government and IT until the White House names a permanent replacement.

      Ziggo, Utrecht, Netherlands                                                                                      Revenues: NA
Ziggo is the largest cable operator in the Netherlands, providing cable television, broadband Internet, and telephone service. It has been taken over by Liberty Global Plc, the European cable company for about $7 billion.

July 2014 - Dutch operator Ziggo announced that Paul Hendriks, CTO at Ziggo will step down. Kamran Ziaee will be appointed as CIO on an interim basis.

September 2014 - The CIO of e-commerce giant Asos, Pete Marsden, has stepped down from his post after two years at the company.
A process to find Marsden's successor is underway, and that the firm is ruling out neither internal or external appointments.

Standard Chartered
is engaged in the business of retail and commercial banking and the provision of other financial services.

January 2015 - On the day it outlined plans to cut thousands of jobs, Standard Chartered has revealed that one employee definitely on his way out is CIO and group head of technology Jan Verplancke. Verplancke is retiring after 10 years at the bank but will stay on until a successor is appointed.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members.
