Vell Compiles Open CIO Roles and Placements in the Past Month

Welcome to our monthly update on CIO and IT Turnover. This newsletter covers Tech function roles, including CIOs, CTOs, CISOs, and Head of Tech & Ops. This is for the month ending November 16th, 2014.

C-level turnover declined 4% in October 2014 from a year earlier. The month to month change from September 2014 to October 2014 saw C-level changes increasing by 16%. (Source: Liberum).

It is surprising that 15 of the 21 appointments were all external and while only two of the 21 appointments were women, the roles were significant, as group CIO at Ford and the other as CISO at Neiman Marcus.

Top Industry sectors for overall C-Suite turnover in October according to the same source, are: Drugs/Biotech, Banking and Energy.

Sources of Appointments: 15 were External appointments, and six were internal promotions.

Diversity: Two out of 21 are women - Neiman Marcus Group (TX) and Ford Motor (TX)

Geographic Distribution: 17 in the US and four International appointments.

July 2013 - Justin Rattner, Intel's CTO and director of the company's labs, is stepping down to meet a requirement in the company's bylaws that employees cannot serve as corporate officers after the age of 65. Intel Labs will report to Intel President Renée James until further decisions related to its leadership are made.

Violin Memory develops a new class of flash-based storage systems that are designed to bring storage performance in-line with high-speed applications, servers and networks.

December 2013 - Violin Memory software CTO Jonathan Goldrick has left the company, with no replacement announced.

Mitek is a mobile solutions provider engaged in the development, sale and service of its software solutions related to mobile imaging.

August 2014 - Mitek said CTO Michael Strange left his position effective Aug. 15 to pursue other opportunities. Mitek named Fritz Hesse as interim VP of engineering.

September 2014 - California Maritime Academy is seeking a CIO. Under general direction of the VP for Administration and Finance, the CIO would be responsible for providing efficient and effective IT support and services to the campus.

September 2014 - Visa is searching for a new CIO after Dennis Howard left in September to work as SVP of core technology services at Charles Schwab. A search for a replacement is underway.

November 2014 - Kaiser Permanente is looking for a CIO, who will be directly responsible for all IT resources. Kaiser Permanente has over 6,000 IT employees & spends in excess of $3 billion per year on information technology & related activities.

The Manatee County School District, in Manatee County, Florida, provides education to 42,000 students. It employs over 7,000 people.

October 2014 - The Manatee County School District's chief information and technology officer Mike Borysiewicz has resigned. The district will begin to look for a replacement for the position and Deputy Superintendent of Operations Don Hall will cover Borysiewicz's duties until a replacement is found.

Groupon operates as a local commerce marketplace that connects merchants to consumers by offering goods and services at a discount in North America and internationally.

November 2012 - Groupon is currently seeking a CIO, as Alan McIntosh has left the company.

United Stationers, Deerfield, IL                                                                Revenues: $5.08b
United Stationers is a wholesale distributor of business products, including technology products, traditional office products, office furniture, janitorial and breakroom supplies, and industrial supplies.

August 2013 - S. David Bent, SVP of eBusiness Services and Corporate CIO, will be leaving United Stationers to pursue a new career opportunity. No replacements announced.

Lawson Products, Chicago, IL                                                                  Revenues: $290m
Lawson Products distributes products and services to the industrial, commercial, institutional, and governmental maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) marketplace.

November 2013 - Robert O. Border, SVP, CIO of Lawson Products notified the Company that he is leaving his current position effective December 1, 2013 to pursue a senior level position with another organization. No replacement has been announced yet.


Epiq Systems, Kansas City, KS                                                          Revenues: $438.7m       Epiq Systems is a provider of integrated technology-enabled solutions for electronic discovery, bankruptcy and class action settlement administration.        

October 2014 - Epiq Systems seeks a proven, high-energy executive to drive the development of leading edge proprietary software and an advanced global network infrastructure, as CTO. The CTO will lead a 250-staff division.


City of New Orleans, New Orleans, LA                                                            Revenues: NA
New Orleans is a major United States port and the largest city and metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana.    

May 2014 - The city of New Orleans is looking for new CIO. The position was vacated by Allen Square, who served four years as the city’s CIO, inheriting a scandal-ridden department in which his two predecessors pled guilty to bribery charges. Food & Drug Administration, Silver Spring, MD                                         Revenues: NA
Department of Health & Human Services, Food & Drug Administration. The FDA is a Federal scientific law enforcement agency with the legislated responsibility for ensuring that drugs, biological products and medical devices are safe and effective, that food and drugs are adequately packaged and informatively labeled and that radiation emitting devices are safe, and to prevent and reduce tobacco use.   

September 2013- Food & Drug Administration office is looking for a CIO. On September 25th 2014, Walter Harris, COO and acting CIO at FDA, told that the agency could pick a new CIO within 90 days.


Demandware, Burlington, MA                                                               Revenues: $103.7m
Demandware is a successful publicly traded $100M-plus provider of enterprise-class cloud based digital commerce solutions.   

September 2014- Demandware is seeking a CIO who will be responsible for internal IT Applications and Technology Services strategy as well as corporate operations support. The CIO will provide scalable application vision and strategy focusing on the use of cloud technology to deliver strategic business initiatives in the areas of ERP (e.g., Intact and Aquilla), Financial planning (e.g., Adaptive Planning), CRM (e.g., Salesforce) and HRIS (e.g., ADP).

Mercury Systems, Chelmsford, MA                                                               Revenues: $208.7m
Systems, formerly Mercury Computer Systems, designs, manufactures and markets real-time digital signal and images processing sub-systems and software for specialized defense and commercial markets.   

November 2014- Mercury is looking for a CISO, who will be responsible for establishing strategy and implementing and monitoring information security standards and policies. The CISO will guide the executive leadership team by recommending Information Security investments which mitigate cyber and insider risks, strengthen defenses, and reduce vulnerabilities for development, internal and client facing systems and products.

LogMeIn, Boston, MA                                                               Revenues: $166.3m
LogMeIn is a provider
of SaaS and cloud-based remote connectivity services for collaboration, IT management and customer engagement.   

November 2014 - LogMeIn is seeking a Chief Information Security Officer to serve as a subject matter expert and leader reporting into the Chief Technology Officer.  The CISO will lead a global team of four and be responsible for the security of LogMeIn’s suite of award winning software products (including secure development), product delivery (NOC), security features of our products (security design), internal infrastructure (development environment), and 3rd party services (CRM’s,etc).

New York State, Albany, NY                                                                 Revenues: NA
New York is a state in the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States.

April 2014 – New York state is looking for a new CIO. The job is to lead the Office of Information and Technology Services (ITS), a relatively new agency with 3,800 employees and a budget of $915 million. The new CIO will replace Brian Digman, who took office in January 2013, two months after the formation of ITS.

April 2014 – L-3 Communications is looking for a Chief Information Officer, with primary responsibility to lead a team of IT resources in varying skills and disciplines, ensuring that the company’s IT goals and objectives are met and/or exceeded. Areas of responsibility include SAP administration, application development, systems infrastructure, telecommunications, security and desktop support.

Red Hat, Raleigh, NC                                                                                  Revenues: $1.5b
Red Hat is a global provider of open source software solutions, using a community-powered approach to develop and offer operating system, middleware, virtualization, storage and cloud technologies.
August 2014 - Brian Stevens, 50, stepped down as EVP and CTO of Red Hat to join Google as VP, Cloud Platforms. In the interim, the office of the CTO will be managed by Paul Cormier, President of products and technologies at Red Hat.

UPMC is a leading not-for-profit health care delivery system in western Pennsylvania.
September 2014 - CIO and EVP Dan Drawbaugh has decided to step down to pursue other professional interests. Ed McCallister, presently SVP, Enterprise Applications & Business Services, Information Services Division, will serve as interim CIO.

RadioShack Corporation (RadioShack) is engaged in the retail sale of consumer electronics goods and services through its RadioShack store chain.
June 2013 - RadioShack Corporation announced that Ms. Sharon Stufflebeme, the Company's SVP and CIO, resigned to pursue other interests. Ms. Stufflebeme's duties will be temporarily assumed by various members of the Company's management while the Company commences a search for a replacement.

LyondellBasell Industries N.V. is an independent chemical company.

October 2014 - The CTO/Senior Technology Architect’s primary responsibility is to develop, maintain and champion LyondellBasell’s technology architecture. The role will interact frequently with the CIO and other IT leadership in regard to IT technology strategy and architecture development. The position is located in Houston and will be global in scope.

May 2014 - George N. McKinnon, SVP and CIO of Symetra Financial, will leave the company. Margaret A. Meister, Symetra EVP and CFO, will take over McKinnon’s responsibilities until he can be replaced, the company also said.

Defense Intelligence Agency, Washington D.C.                                              Revenues: NA
The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) is the main foreign military espionage organization of the United States, operating under the jurisdiction of Department of Defense (DoD).

August 2014 - Gus Taveras is stepping down as the Defense Intelligence Agency's CTO, with no replacement in place. The agency is also in search of a CIO to succeed Grant Schneider, a career employee who had held the job since 2007 and is on the way out the door.

United States Department of Energy, Washington D.C.                                         Revenues: NA

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) is a Cabinet-level department concerned with the United States' policies regarding energy and safety in handling nuclear material.

August 2014 - Robert Brese will leave his post at the Energy Department as CIO on Sept. 5, Federal News Radio reported. The station reports that deputy DOE CIO Dan Adcock will succeed Brese on an interim basis.

USA - Office of E-Government and Information Technology, Washington D.C.      Revenues: NA

The Office of E-Government and Information Technology (E-Gov), headed by the Federal Government’s CIO, develops and provides direction in the use of Internet-based technologies to make it easier for citizens and businesses to interact with the Federal Government, save taxpayer dollars, and streamline citizen participation. 

October 2014 - U.S. CIO Steven VanRoekel is stepping down from his job to join the United States Agency for International Development to help use technology to fight the Ebola virus. Lisa Schlosser, one of VanRoekel’s deputies, will oversee the Office of E-Government and IT until the White House names a permanent replacement.

      Ziggo, Utrecht, Netherlands                                                                                      Revenues: NA
Ziggo is the largest cable operator in the Netherlands, providing cable television, broadband Internet, and telephone service. It has been taken over by Liberty Global Plc, the European cable company for about $7 billion.

July 2014 - Dutch operator Ziggo announced that Paul Hendriks, CTO at Ziggo will step down. Kamran Ziaee will be appointed as CIO on an interim basis.

ASOS Plc, London, U.K.                                                                                 Revenues: $ 769.4m
ASOS Plc is a holding company. The principal activity of its subsidiary is Internet retailing.

September 2014 - The CIO of e-commerce giant Asos, Pete Marsden, has stepped down from his post after two years at the company.
A process to find Marsden's successor is underway, and that the firm is ruling out neither internal or external appointments.

November 2014 - After nearly two years in the role, Telstra CIO Patrick Eltridge has announced that he will be leaving the company to explore international opportunities. Telstra has begun a global search to replace outgoing CIO.

Extreme Networks: The leader in high performance networking named Former Lenovo and IBM Exec David Hume to the position of CIO.

Continuum: The remote monitoring and management (RMM) software provider appointed ex-InsightSquared executive Chris Paul as its CTO and VP of engineering. Former Acadian Asset Management executive Hunter Smith named as its CIO.


Ford Motor: Nick Smither, group VP and CIO, has elected to retire after 34-year career. Marcy Klevorn, with 31-year career in IT with Ford, is now named VP and CIO, succeeding Smither.

Madison Square Garden: The company named Scott Henry as EVP and CTO. Henry joins from Nielsen Audio (formerly known as Arbitron), where he served as EVP and CIO.


SmartBank: The subsidiary of SmartFinancial, recently announced the promotion of VP and Director of IT Brandon Christopher as SVP and CIO. 


Neiman Marcus Group: Luxury retailer Neiman Marcus Group hires Sarah Hendrickson as its first CISO, from Children’s Medical Center of Dallas.

CenterPoint Energy: CIO & VP of IT Gary Hayes has been named SVP and CIO of the newly formed Technology Operations organization at CenterPoint Energy.


Echo360: The global leader in active and distance learning solutions, appointed CTO at Amplify Education Bradley S. Fordham, Ph.D. as CTO.

Washington, D.C.

Federal Trade Commission: The Federal Trade Commission has appointed its former staff Ashkan Soltani as the agency’s Chief Technologist, succeeding Dr. Latanya Sweeney.


Deutsche Bank: COO Henry Ritchotte, 51, will move into a newly created position on the management board leading the bank's technology operations.

SAP: SAP named Quentin Clark, a 20-year Microsoft veteran, as its CTO.

Publishing Technology: David Montgomery has been named to the newly created position of CTO. He joins the company from Inspired Thinking Group.

ANZ Bank: Scott Collary has been appointed as the new CIO, seven months after the departure of Anne Weatherston. Collary was previously CIO, consumer North America and Global Cards at Citigroup.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members.
