VMware Appoints CFO Jonathan Chadwick as Co-COO; to Work Jointly With Carl Eschenbach

VMware appointed CFO Jonathan Chadwick to the expanded role of COO. Carl Eschenbach, VMware’s President and COO is also taking on an expanded role within VMware, with the addition of the Corporate Strategy and Business Development function moving into his organization. Chadwick and Eschenbach will share the office of COO. 

Chadwick joined VMware as CFO and EVP since late 2012. Previously, he had been CFO of Skype and a Corporate VP of Microsoft since its acquisition of Skype in 2011. Chadwick joined Skype from McAfee, where he was the EVP and CFO, till McAfee was acquired by Intel. At Cisco, he served as SVP, CFO - Global Customer Markets; SVP, Corporate Controller and Principal Accounting Officer; VP, Corporate Controller and Principal Accounting Officer; and VP, Corporate Finance & Planning. Chadwick currently serves on the board of F5 Networks.

In addition to the expanded roles of Eschenbach and Chadwick, VMware promoted three executives:

Betsy Sutter has been promoted to Corporate SVP and Chief People Officer. Betsy Sutter joined VMware in 2001 and has led all aspects of VMware's people strategies, bringing more than 25 years of HR leadership. Prior to VMware, Sutter held senior management roles at Silicon Gaming, Aehr Test Systems, Digital Equipment Corporation, GE and Intersil.

Bill Fathers has been promoted to EVP and GM of the Hybrid Cloud Services BU. Fathers joined VMware as SVP and GM of the Hybrid Cloud Services BU in March 2013. Before VMware, he served as president of Savvis, SVP and global head of sales and marketing, overseeing Savvis' global strategic business direction as well as the company's sales execution, product development and go-to-market initiatives.

Martin Casado, fellow and CTO, Networking, will take on the leadership of the Networking and Security BU as SVP and GM. Casado, one of the inventors of software-defined networking, was co-founder of Nicira, a company acquired by VMware in 2012. He has been a key driver in helping build VMware NSX, the company’s network virtualization platform, to become the $100 million and growing VMware business it is today.

Casado replaces Steve Mullaney, who, after successfully leading the integration of Nicira into VMware, has decided to leave the company.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. She also has been a featured speaker on leadership at numerous conferences and at Columbia University's MBA program.

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
