Lockheed Martin’s Information Systems EVP and Former CIO Joins 3M Board 

3M announced the appointment of Sondra Barbour, 51, to its Board of Directors. Barbour currently is EVP of Lockheed Martin’s Information Systems & Global Solutions business division. Prior to that, she served as SVP of the Enterprise Business Services organization and Lockheed’s CIO, heading all of the corporation’s internal IT operations, including protecting the company’s infrastructure and information from cyber threats. Her experience also includes leadership in Shared Services and Internal Audit functions providing knowledge and oversight of supply chain activities, internal controls, and risk management.

IBM Veteran Joins as Director of Energy Company PPL

Global energy company PPL Corporation appointed Rodney C. Adkins, 55, an executive with more than 30 years of service at IBM, to board. Adkins, who will retire from IBM at the end of this year, is currently serving as SVP with a focus on special corporate projects and key client relationships. Until few months ago, he was SVP of Corporate Strategy for IBM. Prior, he served as SVP of the Systems and Technology Group, GM of the Pervasive Computing division, and in many other roles. He also serves on the boards of UPS and W.W. Grainger, the national board of the Smithsonian Institution, and the board of the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering.

Illumina Appoints Google SVP as Director

Illumina, the developer and manufacturer of life science tools and integrated systems, appointed Jeff Huber, 46, to its Board. Huber is SVP at Google which he joined in 2003 and led development for Google Maps (2011-2013), Google Apps (2005-2010), and Google Ads (2003-2011). Prior to Google, he was VP of Architecture and Systems Development at eBay, and SVP of Engineering at Excite@Home. Huber is also a member of the board of d Electronic Arts.

Arch Capital Group appoints New Board Member with Financial Expertise in Technology Biz

Insurance company Arch Capital Group appointed Louis J. Paglia, 56, to the Company’s Board of Directors. Paglia founded Customer Choice in April 2010, a data analytics company serving the electric utility industry. He previously served as EVP of UIL Holdings Corporation, an electric utility, contracting and energy infrastructure company. Paglia also served as UIL Holdings’ CFO and as President of its investment subsidiaries. Prior to joining UIL Holdings, he was EVP and CFO of, a credit evaluation software company. Prior to that, he served as the CFO for TIG Holdings and Emisphere Technologies. He is currently a member of the boards of NorthStar Realty Finance and NorthStar Asset Management Group.

Digital Media Professional Joins D&B Board

Dun & Bradstreet appoints L. Gordon Crovitz, to the Company’s Board. The former Publisher of The WSJ and EVP of Dow Jones and President of its Consumer Media Group, Crovitz has been active in digital media since the early 1990s. He led the growth of The WSJ Online, making it the largest paid news site on the Web. While at Dow Jones, he launched the Factiva business-search service and led the acquisition of the MarketWatch Web site, VentureOne database, Private Equity Analyst newsletter and online news services VentureWire (Silicon Valley), e-Financial News (London) and VWD (Frankfurt). In 2009, Crovitz co-founded the Press+ software company, later acquired by RR Donnelley in 2011.

Health IT Exec Joins Patient Care Services Company’s Board

Hanger, leading provider of orthotic and prosthetic patient care, elected Asif Ahmad as a director. Ahmad is the CEO and a director of Anthelio Healthcare Solutions, one of the largest independent providers of IT and business process services to hospitals and other healthcare providers. Ahmad has served as a SVP and GM of Information and Technology Services at McKesson Specialty Health, VP of Diagnostic Services for the Duke University Health System and Medical Center, and Administrator and CIO, CTO and the Chair of the Clinical Technology Council at Duke University.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. She also has been a featured speaker on leadership at numerous conferences and at Columbia University's MBA program.

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
