Welcome to our monthly update on CIO/CTO Turnover. This newsletter covers Tech function roles, including CIOs, CTOs, CISOs, and Head of Tech & Ops,  for the month ending July 20, 2014.

C-Suite turnover declined 15% year-over-year and witnessed decline of 20% month-to-month for June (Source: Liberum). 

Top Industry sectors for overall C-Suite turnover in June, according to the same source, are: Drugs/Biotech, Banking and Energy.

  • Total Number of Open Roles: 35
  • Newly Opened Roles: Three - Torvec (NY), Cray (WA), and Ziggo (Netherlands)
  • New Appointments: 29
  • Diversity: Two out of 29 are women - UC Davis (CA) and Unilever (UK)

Intel Corporation designs and manufactures integrated digital technology platforms.
July 2013 - Justin Rattner, Intel's CTO and director of the company's labs, is stepping down to meet a requirement in the company's bylaws that employees cannot serve as corporate officers after the age of 65. Intel Labs will report to Intel President Renée James until further decisions related to its leadership are made.

Synaptics, San Jose, CA                                                                            Revenues: $663m
Synaptics is a developer and supplier of custom-designed human interface solutions that enable people to interact with a range of mobile computing, communications, entertainment, and other electronic devices.

November 2013 - Stanley A. Swearingen, Jr. resigned as CTO of the company. His successor is not yet named.

Cutera, Mountain View, CA                                                                        Revenues: $77.3m
Cutera, a medical device company, engages in the research, design, development of laser and other energy based aesthetics systems for practitioners worldwide.

September 2012 - Cutera announced the resignation of Leonard DeBenedictis, who is stepping down just 18 months after being named CTO of the Mountain View, Calif.-based aesthetic device maker. No replacement has been announced.

Axesstel, San Diego, CA                                                                            Revenues: $59.7m
Axesstel provides wireless voice, broadband access and connected home solutions for the worldwide telecommunications markets.
September 2013 - On September 4, 2013, Stephen Sek tendered his resignation as Chief Technology Officer, effective September 30, 2013. Mr. Sek is leaving to accept a position with a company he worked with prior to joining Axesstel, Inc. in 2006.

Violin Memory, Santa Clara, CA                                                                Revenues: $73.8m
Violin Memory develops a new class of flash-based storage systems that are designed to bring storage performance in-line with high-speed applications, servers and networks.

December 2013 - Violin Memory software CTO Jonathan Goldrick has left the company, with no replacement announced.

LeapFrog Enterprises, Emeryville, CA                                                       Revenues: $581m
LeapFrog Enterprises developes educational entertainment for children.

December 2013 – LeapFrog is looking for a CTO, who will have global responsibility for the implementation of critical customer facing applications and infrastructure systems in the organization as well as web development, software engineering and customer facing software quality assurance.

Splunk, San Francisco, CA                                                                         Revenues: $198m
Splunk provides a software platform. Splunk’s software collects and indexes data regardless of format or source, and enables users to search, correlate, analyze, monitor and report on this data, all in real time.

November 2013 – The Splunk IT team is looking for a Chief Information Security Officer. The CISO develops and maintains enterprise security and risk policies, oversees vendor and technology risk management, and influences user behavior. The CISO will report to CIO.

ServiceNow, San Diego, CA                                                                       Revenues: $243.7m
ServiceNow is a provider of cloud-based services to automate enterprise IT operations.

January 2014 – Arne Josefsberg, CTO of ServiceNow, resigned from the Company to join GoDaddy. No Details on Interim or Replacement has been announced.


Molycorp, Greenwood Village, CO                                                             Revenues: $528m
Molycorp provides Rare Earths and Molybdenum products to companies.

March 2013 - Molycorp’s EVP & CTO John Burba, PhD., 60, has resigned, with no replacements announced.


SunGard iWorks, Alpharetta, GA                                                                          Revenues: NA
SunGard iWorks is the insurance industry focused vertical within SunGard.

December 2013 - SunGard is looking for iWorks CIO, with direct responsibility for all product initiatives across SunGard Insurance.


Groupon, Chicago, IL                                                                                 Revenues: $2.33b
Groupon operates as a local commerce marketplace that connects merchants to consumers by offering goods and services at a discount in North America and internationally.

November 2012 - Groupon is currently seeking a CIO, as Alan McIntosh has left the company.

Horace Mann, Springfield, IL                                                                     Revenues: NA
Horace Mann is the largest, national multiline insurance company focusing on educators’ financial needs with more than $7 billion in assets. Horace Mann offers auto and homeowners insurance, retirement annuities, life insurance and other financial solutions to educators and their families.

May 2013 - Horace Mann is currently seeking a CIO to replace Mark Hansen, who recently left.

United Stationers, Deerfield, IL                                                                Revenues: $5.08b
United Stationers is a wholesale distributor of business products, including technology products, traditional office products, office furniture, janitorial and breakroom supplies, and industrial supplies.

August 2013 - S. David Bent, Senior Vice President of eBusiness Services and Corporate CIO, will be leaving United Stationers to pursue a new career opportunity. No replacements announced.

Lawson Products, Chicago, IL                                                                  Revenues: $290m
Lawson Products distributes products and services to the industrial, commercial, institutional, and governmental maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) marketplace.

November 2013 - Mr. Robert O. Border, SVP, CIO of Lawson Products notified the Company that he is leaving his current position effective December 1, 2013 to pursue a senior level position with another organization. No replacement has been announced yet.


1st Source Bank, South Bend, IN                                                             Revenues: NA
Founded in 1863 in South Bend, Indiana, 1st Source bank remains the largest locally controlled financial institution headquartered in the northern Indiana-southwestern Michigan area.

September 2013 - 1st Source Bank seeks to recruit a CIO who will be responsible for providing vision and leadership in developing and implementing information technology initiatives and for managing the Information Technology Group.

February 2013 - Chad Bennett, who served as President and Chief Technical Officer at Michael Mann's aftermarket sales venue,, for the past 10 months has stepped down from that position.

Food & Drug Administration, Silver Spring, MD                                         Revenues: NA
Department of Health & Human Services, Food & Drug Administration. The FDA is a Federal scientific law enforcement agency with the legislated responsibility for ensuring that drugs, biological products and medical devices are safe and effective, that food and drugs are adequately packaged and informatively labeled and that radiation emitting devices are safe, and to prevent and reduce tobacco use.   

September 2013- Food & Drug Administration office is looking for a CIO.


City of Boston, Boston, MA                                                                      Revenues: NA
Boston is the capital and largest city of the state of Massachusetts.    

March 2014 - Under the leadership of Mayor Martin J. Walsh, the City of Boston seeks a technology leader with a strong concern for and awareness of urban issues, who, as CIO, will build the infrastructure, tools, and team that deliver against this vision. Justin C. Holmes  is the interim CIO appointed in January 2014.

New Jersey

Hill International, Marlton, NJ                                                                   Revenues: $417m
Hill International is a worldwide construction consulting firm headquartered in Marlton, NJ.

November 2013 – The company is seeking an experienced CIO.

New York

Adecco Group North America, Melville, NY                                                Revenues: NA

June 2013 – Adecco’s CIO, IT, Bryan Ackermann, has joined Korn/Ferry as CIO. Adecco hasn’t announced any replacement yet.

North American Breweries, Rochester, NY                                               Revenues: NA
North American Breweries (NAB) is the national platform for investments and growth in the beer and malt beverages industries for KPS Capital Partners, LP. NAB acquired Genesee Brewing Company, Labatt USA and a perpetual license for Seagram's Escapes from Pernod Ricard USA, LLC in 2009. The combination created the largest independently-owned beer company in the U.S.

July 2013 – The company is looking for a CIO, who will be responsible for managing the company’s IT organization in order to maintain and enhance the systems that enable business performance. 

New York State, Albany, NY                                                                 Revenues: NA
New York is a state in the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States.

April 2014 – New York state is looking for a new CIO. The job is to lead the Office of Information and Technology Services (ITS), a relatively new agency with 3,800 employees and a budget of $915 million. The new CIO will replace Brian Digman, who took office in January 2013, two months after the formation of ITS.

July 2014 – Dr. William Mark McVea resigned from the Company in his position as its Chief Technology Officer for personal reasons. No replacement announced yet.

RadioShack Corporation, Fort Worth, TX                                                   Revenues: $4.25b
RadioShack Corporation (RadioShack) is engaged in the retail sale of consumer electronics goods and services through its RadioShack store chain.
June 2013 - RadioShack Corporation announced that Ms. Sharon Stufflebeme, the Company's Senior Vice President and CIO, resigned to pursue other interests. Ms. Stufflebeme's duties will be temporarily assumed by various members of the Company's management while the Company commences a search for a replacement.

Neiman Marcus Group, Dallas, TX                                                              Revenues: Private
Neiman Marcus Group, through its subsidiary, the Neiman Marcus Group, operates as a luxury retailer in the United States. The company operates through two segments, Specialty Retail Stores and Online.
May 2014 - Neiman Marcus Group, the retailer that announced a data breach shortly after it was discovered more than 40 million credit cards had been compromised at Target, is on the hunt for its first chief information security officer.


US Department of Defense, Arlington County, VA                              Revenues: NA
The Department of Defense (Defense Department, USDOD, DOD, DoD or the Pentagon) is the executive department of the government of the United States charged with coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government concerned directly with national security and the United States Armed Forces.

May 2014 - Deputy CIO David DeVries has assumed the role of acting CIO at the Defense Department. DeVries will stay on until the agency finds a permanent replacement for the post, which Teri Takai vacated.


Symetra Financial, Bellevue, WA                                                                   Revenues: $2.1b
Symetra Financial provides products and services that serve the retirement, employee benefits, and life insurance markets in the United States and the District of Columbia.

May 2014 - George N. McKinnon, SVP and CIO of Symetra Financial, will leave the company. Margaret A. Meister, Symetra EVP and CFO, will take over McKinnon’s responsibilities until he can be replaced, the company also said.

Cray, Seattle, WA                                                                                         Revenues: $525.7m
Cray designs, develops, manufactures, markets, and services high-performance computing (HPC) systems.

July 2014 - William C. Blake, SVP and Chief Technology Officer agreed to separate from Cray, with no replacement announced yet.

Washington, D.C.

American Wind Energy Association, Washington, DC                              Revenues: NA
American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) is a national trade association formed in 1974 and representing wind power project developers, equipment suppliers, and others involved in the wind industry.

March 2013 - AWEA is currently seeking a CIO, as Thad Lurie has left the post.

United States Department of Interior, Washington, DC                                      Revenues: NA
The United States Department of the Interior (DOI) is responsible for the management and conservation of most federal land and natural resources, and the administration of programs relating to American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, territorial affairs, and insular areas of the U.S.

April 2014 - Interior Department CIO Bernie Mazer is retiring and transitioning out of his role. 
Sylvia Burns took over the reins as Interior Department’s acting CIO.

Deutsche Boerse, Eschborn, Germany                                                      Revenues: NA
Deutsche Boerse AG is a Germany-based international financial marketplace operator. It operates four business segments: Xetra; Eurex; Clearstream, and Market Data & Analytics.

October 2013 - Deutsche Borse CTO and Clearstream CIO, Yves Baguet, leaves. His CIO responsibilities will be taken over by Richard Green, who is currently running one of Clearstream's application development departments. Green will also take over the CTO role on an interim basis.

   The Co-operative Group, Manchester, UK                                                      Revenues: NA
The Co-operative Group is a British consumer cooperative with a diverse range of retail businesses. It is co-operatively run and owned by its members.

June 2014 - Troubled retailer, financial services, funeral and legal services provider The Co-operative Group has lost its Group CIO Andy Haywood. No replacement has been announced yet.

Ziggo, Utrecht, Netherlands                                                                                      Revenues: NA
Ziggo is the largest cable operator in the Netherlands, providing cable television, broadband Internet, and telephone service. It has been taken over by Liberty Global Plc, the European cable company for about $7 billion.

July 2014 - Dutch operator Ziggo announced that Paul Hendriks, CTO at Ziggo will step down. Kamran Ziaee will be appointed as CIO on an interim basis.

Inilex: The provider of intelligent telemetry solutions for vehicles added Robert Cichon, CTO of Newtek Business Services, as the company’s new CTO.


HP: SVP and CIO of The Clorox Company, Ralph Loura, is now CIO, Enterprise Group at HP.

Adobe: Adobe has appointed insider John Landwehr as its first-ever public sector CTO.

Electronic Arts: EA hires former eBay’s VP of technology and science for Marketplaces, Ken Moss, as CTO.

Sysorex Global Holdings: irisnote exec Craig Harper has joined as CTO of the IT services company.

UC Davis: Viji Murali, an IT veteran in higher education, has been named CIO of University of California, Davis. She comes to UC Davis from Washington State University.

Adaptive Medias: The multi-channel audience and content monetization company appointed online advertising and "big data" technology veteran Bryan Nguyen as Chief Technology Officer.

Occidental Petroleum: Insider Ioannis A. Charalambous is now VP and CIO.

SecureAuth: Principal product manager at FireEye, Keith Graham, is now CTO at SecureAuth, the company providing 2-Factor Access Control to mobile, cloud, web, and network resources.


Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University: CTO for the Worldwide Campus, Becky L. Vasquez, who has held various technology leadership positions with the university for 16 years, is now CIO.


First Data: Christopher Augustin, a financial services technology innovator and CIO of Marked Private, has joined First Data as CIO.


NAB: The National Association of Broadcasters appoints Sam Matheny, VP of Policy and Innovation at Capitol Broadcasting Co., as EVP and CTO.


Frontier Airlines: Frontier Airlines appointed JetBlue Airways’ CIO Rick Zeni as the low fare carrier’s new CIO.


Federal-Mogul Motorparts: Federal-Mogul Motorparts appoints CIO Gary Desai from Honeywell.


DataSource: The Kansas City-based provider of managed marketing operations services promoted from VP of technology and professional services Eugene Arokiasamy to CTO.

New Jersey

CheckPoint HR: Technology Innovator and Binary Tree COO Don Cohen joins CheckPoint HR as CTO.

New York

Evercore: Investment banking advisory firm Evercore appoints J.P. Morgan exec Donald Monson as a Senior Managing Director for its Technology Group.

SterlingBackcheck: The background screening company appointed Pearson’s CTO Martin Brodbeck as its new CTO.

ValueCentric: The leader in connected healthcare intelligence appoints Delaware North Companies’ senior IT exec Herb Stortz to the position of CTO.

North Carolina The world's largest Real Estate Investors network appoints 25-year IT industry veteran Martin Coyne as Chief Technology Officer.


Phillips Edison & Company: CIO of The Related Companies Shaun Smith was appointed to the newly created position of CIO.


Civitas Learning: The company which develops software to help improve student learning and education named Facebook exec Niranjan Nagar as CTO.


Cardinal Bank: Cardinal Bank appoints former CIO of Capital Bank Corporation and First Citizens Bancshares, Ralph J. Edwards, Jr., as SVP & CIO.

Washington, D.C.

U.S. General Services Administration: After four months in the acting role, IT industry leader Sonny Hashmi has been named permanent CIO for the General Services Administration (GSA).


American Video Teleconferencing Corp.: The company appointed Crown Equity Holdings’ IT exec Mark Vega as CTO and Director.


Unilever: Jane Moran is replacing Willem Eelman as Global CIO of Unilever.

Accenture: India-based company leader Bhaskar Ghosh is now Group Chief Executive – Technology Delivery part of the company’s Global Management Committee.

TATA Group: Technology veteran Gopichand Katragadda was hired from General Electric as the India-based TATA group's first CTO.

Brocade: The company promoted principal architect Curt Beckmann to the role of CTO for EMEA. He’s based in France.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members.
