GE Capital Appoints CIO from another GE Division

James R. Fowler, 42, is now VP and CIO for GE Capital. Most recently, Fowler was CIO for GE's Power Generation Products and services business. Before that, in 2009, he was promoted to CIO for GE Aviation’s Supply Chain organization. In 2005, he was named CTO for Architecture and Technology for GE Infrastructure. He also held roles as a IT Six Sigma Black Belt and Manager of Human Resource Systems for GE Corporate. He joined GE in 2000 as Manager of UNIX technology with the Aviation business. Prior to GE, he held IT roles with NCR and Accenture.

Unilever’s New CIO Comes from Thomson Reuters

Jane Moran is replacing Willem Eelman as Global CIO of Unilever. Moran was formerly CIO of information services company Thomson Reuters, and was CIO of the Markets Division, CIO of Thomson Financial, and CIO of CCBN (a Thomson acquisition). She started her career as a developer, building financial portfolio management and trading software applications and platforms.

HP Appoints CIO for its Enterprise Group from Clorox

Ralph Loura is now CIO, Enterprise Group at HP.  Before joining the company, he was SVP, CIO at The Clorox Company. Earlier he was SVP IT and Operations at Medicis, CIO at Symbol Technologies, Director IT at Cisco, VP Systems at D. E. Shaw & Company, and Manager Research Computing and Networking Services at Lucent Technologies.

India-based Leader Takes Global Responsibility at Accenture as Group Chief Executive for Technology Delivery

Accenture named Bhaskar Ghosh, 55, as Group Chief Executive – Technology Delivery and appointed him to the company’s Global Management Committee. He will continue to lead the company’s Application Services business. He will now have additional responsibility for managing the company’s portfolio of software solutions. Previously, Ghosh led Accenture’s Delivery Centers for Technology in India and was the global application outsourcing lead. Before joining Accenture, he was VP and global head of IT infrastructure management services at Infosys, and held several senior positions with Philips in India.

Target Hires GM's IT Security Exec Brad Maiorino as SVP & CISO after Massive Data Breach Last Year

Target has hired Brad Maiorino as SVP & Chief Information Security Officer. Maiorino comes to Target from General Motors where he was the company’s Chief Information Security and Information Technology Risk Officer. Prior to General Motors, he was the Chief Information Security Officer at General Electric. Prior to that, he was IT Leader at IBM Global Services, Network Engineer at Datalan, and Programmer Analyst at Deloitte & Touche.

Adobe Appoints its First-Ever Public Sector CTO

Adobe has appointed John Landwehr as its first-ever public sector CTO. Landwehr has more than 20 years of enterprise technology experience working with commercial and public sector organizations. At Adobe his innovations include Adobe’s first iPhone and BlackBerry mobile applications, and many other things. His public sector experience includes solutions incorporating electronic documents, digital media, Web content management, analytics, information assurance and collaboration technologies. He has provided testimony to Congress, and held positions at NeXT and Apple.

Federal-Mogul Motorparts Appoints CIO from Honeywell

Gary Desai, 54, was appointed as CIO of Federal-Mogul Motorparts. Desai was most recently VP, IT Business Transformation at Honeywell and before that, was at General Motors. Previously, he also served as CIO of Allison Transmission.

Evercore Appoints Senior Managing Director for Technology Group

Investment banking advisory firm Evercore appoints Donald Monson as a Senior Managing Director for its Technology Group. Monson was most recently a Managing Director and Head of International Internet and Digital Media Investment Banking at J.P. Morgan. Prior to that, he was Head of Media Investment Banking for Europe, the Middle East and Africa based in London where he spent 10 years in J.P. Morgan’s TMT Investment Banking team. Prior to J.P. Morgan, he worked at Siemens Venture Capital in Germany and Silicon Valley investing in technology companies.

HSBC Tech Exec Joins Ace Hardware as CIO 

Ace Hardware, the top hardware cooperative in the US, tapped Karen Fedyszyn, 45, as VP of IT and CIO. She most recently served as SVP of IT for HSBC's United States group after serving as EVP and global head of delivery while living in Hong Kong.

Frontier Airlines Appoints CIO from JetBlue Airways

Frontier Airlines appointed Rick Zeni as the low fare carrier’s new CIO. Previously, Zeni was an executive at JetBlue Airways for nearly seven years where he served most recently as VP – IT Business Solution Delivery, having joined the company as VP Revenue Management. Previously, he held the position of Managing Director, Pricing and Revenue Management Development at US Airways. Zeni began his career working the ramp at Newark International Airport for Piedmont Airlines.

Technology Innovator and Binary Tree COO Joins CheckPoint HR as CTO 

Don Cohen joins CheckPoint HR from Binary Tree, where he served as COO. Cohen co-founded Princeton Softech, where he helped build the company from a start-up to a $30 million organization. He previously served as CTO for Archive Systems. He also served as VP of software engineering at Voxware. Additionally, he served as the general manager at Rocket Software for the Systems Tools and RFID Products Business Unit. He also held key positions at Automated Data Processing and Applied Data Resources.

City of Seattle Gets New CTO

The City of Seattle names Microsoft cloud privacy strategist Michael Mattmiller as new CTO. Mattmiller replaces interim CTO Sabra Schneider, who temporarily took the reins in April after Erin Devoto stepped down from the position in March. Schneider will return to her previous role as Director of Electronic Communications. Mattmiller most recently was a Senior Strategist for Enterprise Cloud Privacy at Microsoft, and before that he spent more than a decade in the Washington D.C. area doing risk assurance and data management consulting work for PricewaterhouseCoopers.

US Commerce Department Appoints former CIO of Homeland Security Department as New CIO

The commerce department appointed former CIO of Homeland Security Dept. and FAA Steve Cooper as new CIO. Cooper's most recent government post was with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), where he was named deputy CIO in 2011. Cooper had joined the FAA in 2009 as the CIO of its Air Traffic Organization (ATO).

U.S. General Services Administration Names Cloud Leader as CIO 

After four months in the acting role, IT industry leader Sonny Hashmi has been named permanent CIO for the General Services Administration (GSA). Hashmi will now officially fill the role previously held by Casey Coleman, who left the company in January to join AT&T’s government solutions business. Hashmi has served as GSA’s CTO since 2011. Prior to joining the U.S. General Services Administration, Sonny was the Deputy CIO for the District of Columbia Office of the CFO.

Broadcasting Industry Veteran Named NAB EVP/CTO

The National Association of Broadcasters appoints Sam Matheny, 42, VP of Policy and Innovation at Capitol Broadcasting Co., as EVP and CTO. Before joining the corporate staff in 2012, Matheny was a principal in several Capitol Broadcasting media ventures: GM at News Over Wireless, which provided the first local television news applications for wireless carriers; Manager of Digital Cinema at Microspace Communications, deploying digital cinema as a viable market for satellite delivery; and VP & GM at DTV Plus, which developed and launched the nation's first DTV datacasting service.

TATA's First CTO to Steer Group to Digital Core

Technology veteran Gopichand Katragadda was hired from General Electric as the India-based TATA group's first CTO. Katragadda is a GE veteran of around 12 years, serving as Managing Director, GE India Technology Center and Senior General Manager, India Engineering Operations at GE Energy.

Phillips Edison & Company Appoints CIO to Manage Strategic and Corporate Technology Needs

Phillips Edison & Company appointed Shaun Smith to the newly created position of CIOSmith has over 15 years of industry experience and has been awarded Realcomm’s 2010 Digie Award for “Best Use of Automation” and recognized in Realcomm’s Top 35 to Watch list in 2011. Most recently, Smith served as CIO for The Related Companies.  Prior to that, he served as Practice Director with Avanade, consulted for Unisys, and was an Engineer with the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.  Smith also served in the United States Air Force where he earned the Air Force Accommodation Medal for application development.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
