Annaly Capital Management’s New CTO Comes from Harvard Management

Financial services firm Annaly Capital Management appointed Michael Maffattone as the CTO. Most recently, Maffattone was the CTO of investment management company Harvard Management Company and prior to that was CIO of Caxton Associates. 

Ulta Beauty CIO Joins Tractor Supply Company as Former CIO Retires

Tractor Supply Company, the operator of retail farm and ranch stores, appointed Robert D. Mills as SVP and CIO, following the retirement of James Callison. Prior to joining Tractor Supply Company, Mills was the CIO for Ulta Beauty; VP, CIO for the online business unit at Sears Holdings, and held roles at Allstate Insurance, Rockwell International Telecommunications Division, and Household Finance Corporation.

Quest Diagnostics Appoints New CIO to Strengthen the Management Team

Lidia L. Fonseca joined Quest Diagnostics, provider of diagnostic information services, as SVP and CIO. Fonseca previously was the CIO at LabCorp and held a number of senior leadership positions in supply chain and IT at Philips Healthcare.

Brocade Appoints Former Cisco and Juniper Regional Exec as APAC CTO

Supplier of networking equipment Brocade appointed Matt Kolon to the role of CTO for Asia Pacific, based in Beijing, China. Kolon was most recently the APAC managing director for Evolved Programmable Network business and CTO for Service Providers at Cisco. Prior to Cisco, he spent 12 years at Juniper Networks, holding various executive roles in customer service, sales and marketing, and systems engineering.

Rackspace Hosting Names New CIO 

Rackspace Hosting, the open cloud company, appoints Ryan Neading as CIO. Neading will be responsible for the Rackspace billing systems, internal IT systems and tools, technology operations, operational metrics and interfacing with external suppliers and resource providers. Prior to joining Rackspace, Neading's responsibilities were expanded to serve as the co-leader of eBay's development site in Austin.


EVP and CTO of WebMD, William Pence, will join AOL as its Global CTO. Before joining WebMD, Pence had served as CTO and SVP at Napster, CTO for Universal Music Group’s online initiatives and for the Pressplay joint venture with Sony, and spent more than a decade at IBM, in research and software division. William Pence replaces CTO Curtis Brown at AOL.

AVX Corporation Re-Assigns COO to CTO Role

AVX Corporation, the manufacturer and supplier of a broad line of passive electronic components, appoints its President & COO John Lawing, as CTO, replacing Carl Eggerding. Lawing has been VP of Advanced Products, Divisional VP of Advanced Products and Divisional VP of Leaded Products. Prior to 1997, Lawing held Engineering, Technical, Operational and Plant management positions. Lawing has been with the Company since 1981.

Polycom Promotes CISO to CIO

Polycom, the provider of unified communications solutions, promoted its VP of IT and CISO Scott McCool to the role of Group VP of IT and CIO. Prior to joining Polycom in 2013, McCool directed global infrastructure engineering at Brocade, launching innovative designs and leveraging Brocade IP, storage networking and software-defined networking (SDN) solutions.

Cisco Exec Joins as CIO of Boston Consulting Group

Boston Consulting Group appointed Robbert Kuppens, 49, as global CIO. Kuppens previously worked as Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Russia (EMEAR) CIO for Cisco. Prior to joining Cisco, he was a partner for e-strategy at KPMG’s Nolan, Norton & Co. Before KPMG, he worked at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) and NCR Corporation.

Raytheon Exec Joins Aerojet Rocketdyne as CIO

Aerojet Rocketdyne, a GenCorp company, appoints Jose Ruiz, Jr. as VP/CIO. Ruiz previously served as VP of IT and CIO for Raytheon Intelligence and Information Systems. Prior to that, Ruiz served as CIO at Northrop Grumman Corporation supporting the Missile Defense Agency. Ruiz began his career in the U.S. Air Force.

Kimball International Promotes IT Exec to VP Position

Furniture and electronic assemblies manufacturer Kimball International promotes Sandy Smith, 51, to VP, IT, with global responsibility for Kimball's EMS IT and computing systems in Asia, Europe and North America. She currently serves as Director, Systems Support, a position she assumed in 2004. Smith joined Kimball in 1987, starting in customer service and moved into IT support, holding positions including IT support, systems manager and IT Director.

Workers Compensation Insurance Provider Appoints Insider as CIO

Employers Holdings, the provider of workers compensation insurance, promoted Richard P. Hallman to EVP, CIO. Hallman previously served as SVP, CIO, a position he held with EMPLOYERS since 2010. Rich is retired from the U.S. Military where he served over 23 years in the Nevada National Guard and the US Air Force.

Journal Broadcast Group Appoints CIO with Operational and Tech Strategy Knowledge 

Journal Broadcast Group, the Journal Communications subsidiary has named Brian McHale the company's new VP/CTO. McHale joins Journal from Fisher Communications, where he served as VP of Technology. Prior to that, he was Chief Technologist at Mobile500 Alliance and held a variety of senior technology roles at the companies of Liberty Media, including SVP and CTO at DirecTV Sports Networks, VP of IT at Starz Entertainment, and VP of International IT at Discovery Communications. He also currently serves as a Board Member and Advisor to Wearable X Labs.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. She also has been a featured speaker on leadership at numerous conferences and at Columbia University's MBA program.

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
