Welcome to our monthly update on CIO/CTO Turnover. This newsletter covers Tech function roles that spans CIOs, CTOs, CISOs, and Head of Tech & Ops roles.

Some Stats for the Tech Execs Turnover for the thirty days ending March 20, 2014:

  • 17 new CIOs/CTOs were appointed
  • Diversity: Two of the newly appointed executives are woman (BerkleyNet and Aviva)
  • Sourced Externally: Six of the 17 appointments were internal promotions (Pandora Media (2), BerkleyNet, Discovery Communications, One Media Corp, HipCricket)
  • There are 51 open roles listed

Geographically, the appointments are as follows:

  • 15 in the U.S.
  • 1 in Canada and 1 major international

There was a 9% decline in CIO vacancies in February-March from January-February, and 5% decline in CIO appointments in the same time period.

Top Industry sectors in February-March are: Technology, Media and Business Services.

Intel Corporation designs and manufactures integrated digital technology platforms.
July 2013 - Justin Rattner, Intel's CTO and director of the company's labs, is stepping down to meet a requirement in the company's bylaws that employees cannot serve as corporate officers after the age of 65. Intel Labs will report to Intel President Renée James until further decisions related to its leadership are made.

Synaptics, San Jose, CA                                                                            Revenues: $663m
Synaptics is a developer and supplier of custom-designed human interface solutions that enable people to interact with a range of mobile computing, communications, entertainment, and other electronic devices.

November 2013 - Stanley A. Swearingen, Jr. resigned as CTO of the company. His successor is not yet named.

Cutera, Mountain View, CA                                                                        Revenues: $77.3m
Cutera, a medical device company, engages in the research, design, development of laser and other energy based aesthetics systems for practitioners worldwide.

September 2012 - Cutera announced the resignation of Leonard DeBenedictis, who is stepping down just 18 months after being named CTO of the Mountain View, Calif.-based aesthetic device maker. No replacement has been announced.

Polycom, San Jose, CA                                                                              Revenues: $1.39m
Polycom is a provider of unified communications (UC) solutions and a provider of telepresence, video, voice and infrastructure solutions based on open standards.

May 2013 – Polycom’s CIO, Arijit (Ari) Bose, has recently left the company, with no replacement announced yet.

American Pacific Mortgage, Roseville, CA                                                Revenues: NA
American Pacific Mortgage is a retail mortgage lender in America.
August 2013 - American Pacific Mortgage is looking for a CIO, who will be a member of the executive team and provide leadership, planning and management for all areas of Information Services strategy, development and implementation.

Axesstel, San Diego, CA                                                                            Revenues: $59.7m
Axesstel provides wireless voice, broadband access and connected home solutions for the worldwide telecommunications markets.
September 2013 - On September 4, 2013, Stephen Sek tendered his resignation as Chief Technology Officer, effective September 30, 2013. Mr. Sek is leaving to accept a position with a company he worked with prior to joining Axesstel, Inc. in 2006.

Violin Memory, Santa Clara, CA                                                                Revenues: $73.8m
Violin Memory develops a new class of flash-based storage systems that are designed to bring storage performance in-line with high-speed applications, servers and networks.

December 2013 - Violin Memory CTO Jonathan Goldrick has left the company, with no replacement announced.

LeapFrog Enterprises, Emeryville, CA                                                       Revenues: $581m
LeapFrog Enterprises developes educational entertainment for children.

December 2013 – LeapFrog is looking for a CTO, who will have global responsibility for the implementation of critical customer facing applications and infrastructure systems in the organization as well as web development, software engineering and customer facing software quality assurance.

Splunk, San Francisco, CA                                                                         Revenues: $198m
Splunk provides a software platform. Splunk’s software collects and indexes data regardless of format or source, and enables users to search, correlate, analyze, monitor and report on this data, all in real time.

November 2013 – The Splunk IT team is looking for a Chief Information Security Officer. The CISO develops and maintains enterprise security and risk policies, oversees vendor and technology risk management, and influences user behavior. The CISO will report to CIO.

ServiceNow, San Diego, CA                                                                      Revenues: $243.7m
ServiceNow is a provider of cloud-based services to automate enterprise IT operations.

January 2014 – Arne Josefsberg, CTO of ServiceNow, resigned from the Company to join GoDaddy. No Details on Interim or Replacement has been announced.


Molycorp, Greenwood Village, CO                                                             Revenues: $528m
Molycorp provides Rare Earths and Molybdenum products to companies.

March 2013 - Molycorp’s EVP & CTO John Burba, PhD., 60, has resigned, with no replacements announced.


University of Connecticut, Storrs Mansfield, CT                                       Revenues: NA
The University of Connecticut (UConn) is a public research university in Connecticut. Known as a Public Ivy, UConn was founded in 1881 and is a Land Grant and Sea Grant college & member of the Space Grant Consortium.
March 2013 - The University of Connecticut (UConn) invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice Provost and CIO. Reporting to the Provost, the CIO will provide executive leadership and strategic vision for the institution's information technology assets, infrastructure and services. The University of Connecticut will be assisted by Heidrick & Struggles.


Lennar Corporation, Miami, FL                                                                  Revenues: $3.72b    
Lennar Corporation is a homebuilder and a provider of financial services and through its Rialto Investments (Rialto) segment, an investor, and manager of funds that invest in real estate assets.

December 2013 – Lennar is looking for a CTO with experience in software development, product management, and/or quality assurance experience.


PRGX Global, Atlanta, GA                                                                          Revenues: $208.5m
PRGX Global provides recovery audit services to businesses and government agencies having payment transactions.

May 2013 - PRGX Global CIO Michael Noel has quit, with no replacements announced.

SunGard offers software and technology services worldwide.

December 2013 - SunGard is looking for iWorks CIO, with direct responsibility for all product initiatives across SunGard Insurance.


Groupon, Chicago, IL                                                                                 Revenues: $2.33b
Groupon operates as a local commerce marketplace that connects merchants to consumers by offering goods and services at a discount in North America and internationally.

November 2012 - Groupon is currently seeking a CIO, as Alan McIntosh has left the company.

Horace Mann, Springfield, IL                                                                     Revenues: NA
Horace Mann is the largest, national multiline insurance company focusing on educators’ financial needs with more than $7 billion in assets. Horace Mann offers auto and homeowners insurance, retirement annuities, life insurance and other financial solutions to educators and their families.

May 2013 - Horace Mann is currently seeking a CIO to replace Mark Hansen, who recently left the company.

United Stationers, Deerfield, IL                                                                Revenues: $5.08b
United Stationers is a wholesale distributor of business products, including technology products, traditional office products, office furniture, janitorial and breakroom supplies, and industrial supplies.

August 2013 - S. David Bent, Senior Vice President of eBusiness Services and Corporate CIO, will be leaving United Stationers to pursue a new career opportunity. No replacements announced.

Federal Signal Corporation, Oak Brook, IL                                              Revenues: $803m
Federal Signal Corporation designs and manufactures a suite of products and integrated solutions for municipal, governmental, industrial and commercial customers.

July 2013 - Federal Signal Corporation announced that on July 18, 2013, Charles F. Avery, Jr. submitted to the Company his notice of his intention to resign as the CP, Corporate Controller and CIO, effective July 31, 2013. No replacements announced.

Lawson Products, Chicago, IL                                                                  Revenues: $290m
Lawson Products distributes products and services to the industrial, commercial, institutional, and governmental maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) marketplace.

November 2013 - Mr. Robert O. Border, SVP, CIO of Lawson Products notified the Company that he is leaving his current position effective December 1, 2013 to pursue a senior level position with another organization. No replacement has been announced yet.

GE Transportation, Chicago, IL                                                                 Revenues: $5.6b
As a division of General Electric Company, GE Transportation is a global technology leader and supplier to the railroad, mining, marine, stationary power, drilling and energy storage industries.

November 2013 – Looking for a Client CIO, to lead the client organization in the effective and on-going integration, implementation, and maintenance of IT.


1st Source Bank, South Bend, IN                                                             Revenues: NA
Founded in 1863 in South Bend, Indiana, 1st Source bank remains the largest locally controlled financial institution headquartered in the northern Indiana-southwestern Michigan area.

September 2013 - 1st Source Bank seeks to recruit a CIO who will be responsible for providing vision and leadership in developing and implementing information technology initiatives and for managing the Information Technology Group.

Maryland, Potomac, MD                                                            Revenues: Private provides an online marketplace for domain names as well as revenue-sharing and brand development opportunities for individuals and corporations.    

February 2013 - Chad Bennett, who  served as President and Chief Technical Officer at Michael Mann's aftermarket sales venue,, for the past 10 months has stepped down from that position.

Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, Hampstead, MD                                                    Revenues: $1.04b
Jos. A. Bank Clothiers is a designer, manufacturer, retailer and direct marketer (through stores, catalog call center and Internet) of men’s tailored and casual clothing and accessories and is a retailer of tuxedo rental products.   

June 2013 - Jos. A. Bank Clothiers is currently seeking a Chief Technology Officer.

Food & Drug Administration, Silver Spring, MD                                        Revenues: NA
Department of Health & Human Services, Food & Drug Administration. The FDA is a Federal scientific law enforcement agency with the legislated responsibility for ensuring that drugs, biological products and medical devices are safe and effective, that food and drugs are adequately packaged and informatively labeled and that radiation emitting devices are safe, and to prevent and reduce tobacco use.   

September 2013- Food & Drug Administration office is looking for a CIO.


Target, Minneapolis, MN                                                                            Revenues: $72.6b
The Target Corporation is an American retailing company, founded in 1902 and headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is the second-largest discount retailer in the United States.

March 2014 – Target’s CIO Beth Jacob has resigned as the retailer overhauls its information security and compliance division in the wake of a massive pre-Christmas data breach. In a statement Wednesday, Target Chief Executive Gregg Steinhafel described the search for an interim CIO as a “first step.”
The company has created the position of CISO and is hiring outside for that position.

New Jersey

June 2013 – Adecco’s CIO, Information Technology, Bryan Ackermann, has joined Korn/Ferry as CIO. Adecco hasn’t announced any replacement yet.

North American Breweries, Rochester, NY                                               Revenues: NA
North American Breweries (NAB) is the national platform for investments and growth in the beer and malt beverages industries for KPS Capital Partners, LP. NAB acquired Genesee Brewing Company, Labatt USA and a perpetual license for Seagram's Escapes from Pernod Ricard USA, LLC in 2009. The combination created the largest independently-owned beer company in the U.S.

July 2013 – The company is looking for a CIO, who will be responsible for managing the company’s IT organization in order to maintain and enhance the systems that enable business performance.

September 2013 – Business Insider CTO Pax Dickinson was forced to resign following Twitter firestorm.

March 2014 – Lowe’s CIO Kevin Summers has left the home improvement retailer. Paul Ramsay, a SVP of IT who joined Lowe’s in 2011, has been named acting CIO.


Ohio State University, Columbus, OH                                                       Revenues: NA
The Ohio State University, commonly referred to as Ohio State or OSU, is a public research university in Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 1870, the university was originally known as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College.
June 2013 - The Ohio State University CIO has resigned after five years. Mike Hofherr, associate vice president for Distance Education and eLearning, will be in charge of the OCIO while OSU searches for a replacement for Starkoff.


City of Tulsa, Tulsa, OK                                                                              Revenues: NA
Tulsa is the second-largest city in the US state of Oklahoma and 45th-largest city in the United States.
December 2012 - Tulsa's CIO Tom Golliver, who has been on paid administrative leave since October, has submitted his resignation effective Dec. 31 2012. City Manager Jim Twombly told the Tulsa World that firms are being interviewed to conduct a top-down review of the IT Department.

May 2013 - ABB, the Swiss engineering group, is looking for a new CTO after Prith Banerjee quit. Claes Rytoft, head of technology at the Power Systems division, will be interim CTO as ABB searches internally and externally to fill the position.

Flextronics International, Singapore                                                        Revenues: $23.56b
Flextronics International Ltd. provides design and manufacturing services to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) worldwide.

March 2013 - AstraZeneca has appointed David Smoley as its new CIO. Smoley joins AstraZeneca from Flextronics International where he was SVP and CIO.

Deutsche Boerse, Eschborn, Germany                                                      Revenues: NA
Deutsche Boerse AG is a Germany-based international financial marketplace operator. It operates four business segments: Xetra; Eurex; Clearstream, and Market Data & Analytics.

October 2013 - Deutsche Borse CTO and Clearstream CIO, Yves Baguet, leaves. His CIO responsibilities will be taken over by Richard Green, who is currently running one of Clearstream's application development departments. Green will also take over the CTO role on an interim basis.

Barclays Plc, London, England                                                                  Revenues: $21.12b
Barclays is a global financial services provider engaged in retail banking, credit cards, wholesale banking, investment banking, wealth management and investment management services.

November 2013 - Shaygan Kheradpir, Chief Operations and Technology Officer, is leaving Barclays. Darryl West, Barclays’ CIO, will act as Interim Group Chief Operations and Technology Officer. An internal and external search will be launched for the post.

Pandora Media: The Internet radio service provider promoted VP, Engineering Chris Martin to CTO, and VP, Technical Operations Steve Ginsberg to CIO.

ClearDATA: ClearDATA, the leading healthcare cloud computing platform and service provider, appoints HOSTING.COM CTO Matt Ferrari as CTO.


Integrated Device Technology: The provider of essential mixed-signal semiconductor solutions, appoints Conexant CEO Dr. Sailesh Chittipeddi as global VP of operations and CTO.


BerkleyNet: BerkleyNet, a W. R. Berkley Company, promotes IT exec Kanchana Sarathy as VP and CIO.


Accretive Health: Accretive Health hires SVP and CIO Patrick Funck from Sedgwick.


Discovery Communications: Discovery Communications promoted John Honeycutt to the role of CTO from EVP and COO for Discovery Networks International and was based in London.



Plante Moran: Plante Moran, one of the nation’s largest public accounting and business advisory firms, has named Kelly Services executive Paul Blowers as CIO.


Montana State University: New CIO Jerry Sheehan is former chief of staff at the California Institute for Telecommunications and IT, an interdisciplinary research institute at the University of California San Diego and University of California Irvine.


TeleTracking: TeleTracking Technologies has named Joseph Tetzlaff as CTO, from inVentiv Health.



Emdeon: Alex Choy has been appointed as CIO at Emdeon, after a stint at Oracle.


Oceaneering International: Eric A. Silva has joined Oceaneering as VP and CIO, from El Paso Corporation.

ONE Media Corp: The parent company of ONE World Sports, America ONE Sports, America ONE and ONE CONNXT, appoints SVP, software engineering, Mike Medley to CTO.


Hipcricket: Hipcricket, the leader in mobile engagement and analytics, has recently promoted David W. Hostetter from SVP of engineering to CTO.


The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee: Former Tufts University exec Robert J. Beck, Ph.D. has begun his new role as UWM Associate Vice Chancellor and CIO.


ISIS Lab: The social gaming software platform provider appoints CTO Dmitri Dain from PYR Software.



Aviva: The London based insurance group appointed Monique Shivanandan, the CTO at Capital One, as CIO, taking up her new role in April.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
