Accretive Health Appoints Two New Directors

Accretive Health, a vendor of revenue cycle management technology, named two new independent directors Robert Stanek and Alex Mandl to Board. Robert Stanek is former president and CEO of Catholic Health East. Stanek joined CHE’s Senior Management Team in 1997 as EVP of the Mid-Atlantic Division and then served as COO. Prior to joining CHE, Stanek served in a variety of capacities with the Mercy Health System of Western New York, including president and CEO. Before 1992, Stanek served in a number of administrative positions with the Daughters of Charity health care facilities in Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Alex Mandl is non-executive chairman of Gemalto. Mandl was president and CEO of Gemplus, principal in ASM Investments, and chairman and CEO of Teligent, a company he started in 1996. Prior, Mandl was with AT&T, where he served as President and COO and CFO. Mandl held various leadership positions in the transportation industry before joining AT&T.  He began his career in 1969 at Boise Cascade Corp.

Additionally, Mary Tolan, current chairperson, will not stand for re-election to the Board. Tolan, a founder of Accretive Health, has served as president and CEO and a director since 2003. Prior to that, Tolan spent 21 years at Accenture serving in several leadership roles, including group chief executive for the resources operating group.


Google's Calico Poaches Roche Guru to Steer R&D

Hal Barron, former EVP, head of global product development and CMO at Roche, has been named president for R&D at Calico, Google-launched Research Company on aging and related diseases. Barron comes to Calico as president of R&D after a 17-year stint with Genentech that helped make eventual acquirer Roche the world's most successful oncology company. Barron started out at the company as a clinical scientist, working his way up to CMO and helping change the face of cancer drug development in the process.


Verisk Promotes Hays to Run Health Unit After Sales Slump

Healthcare Analytics firm Verisk Health promoted Nadine Hays as President. Hays was previously EVP and head of sales, marketing and strategic partnerships at the health unit. Hays joined through the company’s 2009 acquisition of D2Hawkeye, a health-care data company where she served as CMO.

Patient-First Revenue Cycle Management Leader Makes Key Role Appointments

MedData, one of the leading providers of revenue cycle management and patient financial lifecycle services, appointed Paul Holland as National VP of Sales and Carl Naso as Corporate Controller. Holland has over twenty years of sales experience, sixteen in the healthcare IT industry with QuadraMed, McKesson and IDX Systems.

With over twenty-five years of financial leadership experience, Naso brings to MedData key financial skill sets that align with the company’s expansive growth trajectory. Prior to MedData, Naso, a CPA, served as BU controller at Aleris International, division controller for Alcoa and operations controller for the Oglebay Norton Company. He has also served in various financial leadership roles with Degussa and Leaseway Transportation.

PeriGen Names Healthcare IT Leader for Growth and Development

PeriGen, the leader in applying real-time clinical decision support to perinatal systems, appointed Chip Long as its SVP of Growth and Development. He joins the company from Merge Healthcare, where he served as VP of sales for the eastern region of the US. Previously, he was a senior member of the team that led Extended Care Information Network (ECIN) to a successful acquisition by Allscripts in 2007. He also served in various leadership roles at Enterprise Systems, (through its IPO and subsequent acquisitions first by HBOC and ultimately by McKesson in 1998.

Kareo Appoints Sales VP

Kareo, a leading provider of cloud-based medical office software and services for small medical practices, hired Amyra Rand as VP of Sales. Prior to joining Kareo, she was Senior Director of Sales and Segment Leader for the SMB Business Unit at HireRight, a cloud-based human capital management solution provider. In Prior to HireRight, Rand held a number of sales leadership roles at Sage Software.


MedSynergies Taps New CFO

MedSynergies, revenue cycle management provider to hospitals, has named Doug Hansen as its new CFO. Most recently, he was CFO for Accelion Health and for the health care division of Perot Systems, now Dell. Hansen also led audit teams for Fortune 500 companies on behalf of Ernst & Young.

Castlight Health Appoints Tech Leader to Newly Created Role of Chief Revenue Officer

Castlight Health, the provider of health care management suite to employers as both a web and mobile application, appoints Michele Law as Chief Revenue Officer, a new position for the organization. Prior to Castlight, Law was the COO at OpenDNS, where she co-founded the OpenDNS enterprise business and built the sales, BD and customer success organizations. Before that, Law spent seven years as a Venture Capital Investor with Greylock Partners. Michele began her career as a hardware engineer at Sun Microsystems.


PaySpan Appoints Payments Industry Veteran as CFO to Support Continued Expansion

PaySpan, the leading provider of healthcare reimbursement and payment automation, named Cheryl King as CFO. King has more than 25 years of financial management and operational business experience and her prior Group CFO role at First Data Corporation demonstrates experience and skill in growth management from early stage to Fortune 50.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. She also has been a featured speaker on leadership at numerous conferences and at Columbia University's MBA program.

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
