Intel Lab's CTO Stepping Down

Justin Rattner, Intel's CTO and director of the company's labs, is stepping down to meet a requirement in the company's bylaws that employees cannot serve as corporate officers after the age of 65. Rattner will take a personal leave immediately to deal with a pressing family matter and will return to Intel at a later date in a role to be determined. Intel Labs will report to Intel President Renée James until further decisions are made. Rattner joined Intel in 1973 and was named its first principal engineer in 1979, its fourth Intel Fellow in 1988 and was in the first group of Intel Fellows to be named Senior Fellow in 2001.

EMC Appoints Federal Division CTO

Paul Austin was appointed Federal Division CTO at EMC.  Paul Austin is an integral part of the Federal Division and acts as a Senior Manager, Chief Technologist, and technical mentor. He formerly served as Global Presales Lead, Flash Business Unit; Global SE Manager; Sr. Practice Manager at EMC, which he joined in 2006.

Cummins Appoints CIO from FedEx

Diesel engine manufacturer Cummins names Sherry Aaholm as CIO. Most recently, Aahom served as the EVP, IT, at FedEx where she drove the IT transformation strategy for the global enterprise to include FedEx Services, FedEx Express, FedEx Freight and FedEx Ground. Aaholm previously held roles at GeoLogistics and Schneider National/Schneider Logistics.

Macquarie Group Appoints Chief Technical Officer

Banking, financial, advisory, investment and funds management services company Macquarie Group named Greg A'slinger as Chief Technical Officer. A'slinger is the former owner of Uniflight, an authorized Bell Helicopter and Eurocopter customer service facility.

Global CIO Appointed at News Corp

Dominic Shine is the new Global CIO at News Corp. This role has responsibility for the ongoing transformation effort and operational management of IT Shared Services, Corporate and Group-wide enterprise technology platforms/infrastructure and oversight of Information Security. Shine served as Programme Director (Consultant) at News Corp and also as Management Consultant at Rylan Consulting Group. He served as CIO of Beazley plc, CIO of Reed Exhibitions, Global Head of IT Platforms at Henderson Global Investors, Programme Director of Egg plc, VP IT at JP Morgan, Global Head of E-business and IT for Wealth Management Division at Global Asset Management (GAM), Business Analyst, Fund Management Platforms at ACT Financial Systems.

Unum Sees CIO Replacement

Disability insurance products company Unum named Kate Miller as SVP and CIO. Miller was the associate CIO of applications development for the Internal Revenue Service. Before joining the IRS in 2005, she was VP and senior principal of CGI, a global IT consulting firm formerly known as American Management Systems. Miller succeeds Kathy Owen, who announced her retirement plans earlier this year.

Global CTO Named at Capgemini

Lanny Cohen, previously head of Capgemini Group Application Services North America, has been appointed as Global CTO. Cohen was formerly a VP at Capgemini and Capgemini Ernst & Young, Partner and Senior Manager at Ernst & Young, Senior Manager and Consultant at Ernst & Whinney.

Tim Bridges, Corporate VP, will replace Lanny Cohen as head of Application Services North America. Tim Bridges formerly ran Application Services US. Bridges was previously BU Leader - NA West region, VP - Global Media Practice Lead, Media & Entertainment Consulting Practice Lead at Capgemini and Partner at Ernst & Young.

Advance Auto Parts Names iCIO as CIO

Specialty retailer of automotive aftermarket parts Advance Auto Parts named Donna Justiss as SVP, CIO. Justiss joined Advance is 2005 and has held a number of IT VP roles, including serving as interim CIO since 2012. Prior to joining Advance, Justiss was with Eckerd for seven years where she held several IT positions, including serving as VP, Application Development. Prior to Eckerd, she spent 19 years with J.C. Penney, where she served in various IT and accounting roles.

HCC Insurance Holdings’ New CIO is Financial Services IT Expert

HCC Insurance Holdings named Parthasarathy Srinivasa as SVP and CIO. Srinivasa has 20 years of IT experience, primarily in the insurance and financial services industries. He most recently served as Group CTO and Global CIO, Enterprise Applications at Zurich Insurance Group Limited. Previously, he was VP and Divisional CIO for Multi Line Applications and CTO for Farmers Insurance Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of Zurich Insurance. Prior to his 16 years at Zurich and Farmers, he provided IT consulting services in the financial services industry.

Allison Transmission Promotes IT Exec to CIO

Commercial and military fully-automatic transmissions company Allison Transmission Holdings promotes Dean E. Ranalli to Executive Director and CIO. Ranalli joined Allison Transmission in 2011 as Director of Global IT Infrastructure and Operations. He had served as Acting CIO since mid-2012. Prior to joining Allison, he was a Global Services Manager with Alcatel-Lucent and worked for Advanticom as Project Manager, Operations Manager and Director of Professional Services.

Cigniti Appoints CTO from Recently Acquired Company

Cigniti Technologies, an independent software testing services company, has expanded its management team by appointing Mahendra Alladi as its CTO. Alladi has more than 15 years of experience spanning testing, software product development and test solution engineering. Prior to this, Alladi was the VP, technology at Gallop Solutions, a company he co-founded. Gallop was recently acquired by Cigniti. Prior to Gallop, Mahendra worked with Travelocity and i2 Technologies.

MetLife Tech & Ops Exec Joins CNO Financial Group as CIO

Insurance firm CNO Financial Group announced that Bradley Bodell, 47, has been named SVP and CIO. Bodell was previously VP, Global Technology & Operations, for MetLife. He joined MetLife in 2000 and progressed through several key leadership roles, including technology assignments in US Broker Operations, US Sales and Service, and Asia Pacific Operations. Prior to MetLife, he held consulting roles at KPMG, and sales roles at IBM.

DeVry Names CIO and Online Services Head

Online education company DeVry appointed Chris Nash as DeVry's CIO. Nash joined DeVry in 2010 as CTO from Millward Brown Group, a global market research organization and division of Kantar Group. Previously, Chris held technical leadership roles at Kraft Foods, Greenbrier & Russell, and Rand McNally.

Eric Dirst was named President of DeVry Online Services. Previously, Dirst held the CIO post while also serving as interim president of DeVry Online Services and Nash served as CTO. Prior to joining DeVry, Dirst was VP and CIO at SIRVA. Dirst is a member of the Hewlett Packard (HP) advisory board and a CIO advisory board member for the startup company IT Central Station. He is also a member of the governing body of the CIO Executive Summit, and a regular blogger for CIO Talk Radio.

Proto Labs Appoints Former McKinsey and Honeywell Exec as CTO

Proto Labs, the company that manufactures computer numerical control machined and plastic injection moulded parts, has promoted Dr. Robert Bodor to CTO. Rob is PhD in Computer Science and has consulting experience with McKinsey and business development knowledge with Honeywell.

NASA Appoints New CIO

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration named Larry N. Sweet, a 26-year veteran of the agency, its CIO. Sweet will lead IT and ensure that the agency’s information assets are in line with federal policies. Prior to his appointment, Sweet was CIO at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, a position he held since 2007. He replaces Linda Cureton, who retired in April.

Arizona Department of Economic Security Appoints Deputy CIO

Linda Jewell is named Deputy CIO at Arizona Department of Economic Security, besides being the Chief Strategic Officer. Previously she served as Deputy CIO, Arizona Department of Education; Program Director, Syntel; Program Director, Advantage Technical Resourcing; Sub Domain Manager at DHL.

Edelweiss Tokio Appoints CTO

Edelweiss Tokio Life Insurance Company, a joint venture between Edelweiss Capital and Japan's Tokio Marine Holdings, appointed Venkat Krishnan as the company’s CTO. Krishnan has around 15 years of experience in IT, mainly across the banking, finance and insurance domains. His last assignment was as CTO for YES Bank, where he was responsible for handling the technology infrastructure and technology management portfolio. He has also worked with Reliance General Insurance, Dhanlaxmi Bank and with HSBC.

Brown University Names VP for Computing and Information Services

Ravi Pendse, currently VP for IT and CIO at Wichita State University, has been named VP for Computing and Information Services at Brown University. He will be succeeding Michael Pickett. As VP for IT since 2011 and CIO since 2005 at Wichita State University, Pendse has led a number of successful interdepartmental collaborations that have developed a broad implementation of IT resources on campus. From 2009 to 2011, while still serving as associate provost, Pendse was named interim dean of university libraries. In 2005 Pendse was named associate provost and CIO. He began as assistant professor and director of the Cisco lab in 1994, advancing to full professor and director of the Advanced Networking Research Center in 2005. He is also a Wichita State Cisco Fellow. From 1989 to 1992 he served as an assistant professor in the College of Engineering and Technology at Northern Arizona University.

Publicis Groupe Customer Engagement Agency Rosetta Names CTO

Rosetta appointed Joe Lozito as CTO. Before joining Rosetta, Lozito worked at Publicis-owned agency Digitas for six years, where he first served as Digitas's technology group director and then served as SVP of technology for North America. Prior to Digitas, Lozito held senior technology positions at R/GA, J Walter Thompson and Information Builders.


Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (CFISD) named Frankie Jackson as CTO. She will be filling the position left by Harold Rowe, who retired after 22 years of service to the district. Jackson comes to CFISD with 29 years of technology experience. She has served as the CTO for Goose Creek ISD for the past 19 years. She was VP of performance management systems for EPIC Interactive Technologies, program manager with Unisys, and a software engineer with McDonnell Douglas. Jackson has served as president and VP of TASBO Board of Directors as well as serving on the Consortium of School Networking Texas CTO Executive Board. She is currently the incoming chair of the Texas CTO.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
