Intel, Sandisk, Marvell & Emulex Shifting Leadership in Data Storage Featured

Intel Lab's CTO Stepping Down

Justin Rattner, Intel's CTO and director of the company's labs, is stepping down to meet a requirement in the company's bylaws that employees cannot serve as corporate officers after the age of 65. Rattner will take a personal leave immediately to deal with a pressing family matter and will return to Intel at a later date in a role to be determined. Intel Labs will report to Intel President Renée James until further decisions are made. Rattner joined Intel in 1973 and was named its first principal engineer in 1979, its fourth Intel Fellow in 1988 and was in the first group of Intel Fellows to be named Senior Fellow in 2001.

SanDisk Appoints SVP, Memory Technology

The data storage solutions giant has appointed Dr. Siva Sivaram as SVP of memory technology. In his role, he will also collaborate with SanDisk's engineering teams to develop advanced system-level techniques for managing future generations of flash memory in the company's storage products and solutions. He will partner with SanDisk's global operations organization to ensure optimal production ramp in SanDisk's fab facilities, and lead SanDisk's R&D collaboration with Toshiba. Sivaram has over 27 years of experience in semiconductors, 3D memory architectures, process technology, equipment and materials. He has held executive positions at Intel and Matrix Semiconductor (Matrix), and at SanDisk after its acquisition of Matrix. Additionally, he founded and led Twin Creeks Technologies, a solar panel and equipment company, has served as a board member for a number of start-up firms, was entrepreneur-in-residence at Crosslink Capital and XSeed Capital, a research scholar at Matsushita Electric, and an adjunct faculty member at San Jose State University.

Marvell Technology Names Co-Founder as President

Marvell Technology, the producer of storage, communications and consumer semiconductor products, has appointed Weili Dai, 51, as president of the company. Dai is one of the most successful women entrepreneurs in the world today. Widely considered a technology visionary, she is the only woman co-founder of a global semiconductor company. Since co-founding Marvell in 1995, Dai's business acumen, strategic thinking and personal network have led to Marvell's ascent. Dai has served a pivotal role in creating some of Marvell's most important strategic partnerships.

Dr. Sehat Sutardja, 51, the continuing CEO and Chairman, relinquished his position as President of the Company.

Emulex Implements CEO/Chair Succession Plan

James M. McCluney, 61, who has served as CEO since 2006, has been named Executive Chairman of Emulex, the provider of a range of network convergence solutions that connect servers, storage, and networks within the data center. McCluney joined the Company in 2003 as President and Chief Operating Officer, was subsequently appointed to the position of President and Chief Executive Officer in 2006, and in 2010, relinquished his President title but retained his Chief Executive Officer title. Prior to Emulex’s acquisition of Vixel in 2003, McCluney had served as Vixel’s Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer and President and Chief Operating Officer of Crag Technologies, formerly Ridge Technologies, and served in various positions at Apple Computer, including Senior Vice President of Worldwide Operations and Vice President of European Operations.

Jeffrey W. Benck, 47, Emulex's current president and COO, has been appointed president and CEO and director. Benck joined Emulex in 2008 as COO, and was promoted to president in 2010. Prior to joining the Company, Benck was President and Chief Operating Officer of QLogic, a supplier of storage networking solutions and also worked for IBM.

Paul Folino, 67, will step down from his role as chairman and will continue as a director. Prior, Folino served as a Director and as Chief Executive Officer of Emulex since 1993 until 2002. In 2002, he was appointed as Chairman and in 2011 he became Non-Executive Chair. He is former President and Chief Operating Officer of Thomas-Conrad Corporation.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. She also has been a featured speaker on leadership at numerous conferences and at Columbia University's MBA program.

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
