VMware’s Veteran Exec Leaves to Join Greylock Partners

Jerry Chen, has left VMware to join Greylock Partners, as partner. Chen, the former VP of cloud and application services at VMware, has joined Greylock Partners as its newest partner. While at VMware, Chen was responsible for the launch of products, including many 1.0 releases. Chen also started two new business units for the company, including the Cloud Application Platform and the Enterprise Desktop business units. In addition, Chen ran the product management and marketing teams responsible for all of VMware’s application infrastructure products including vFabric, Spring, and its Big Data projects.

Akamai Appoints Former American Airlines CIO to Board; Company Names Federal Cybersecurity Exec to Head Global Public Policy

Akamai Technologies announced the election of Monte E. Ford, 53, to its Board of Directors. Widely regarded as a leader in the field of IT, Ford has been recognized as one of the '50 Smartest People in Technology' by Fortune magazine for his transformative leadership and progressive thinking as a CIO. He has served as CEO of Aptean Software and CIO of AMR Corporation and Associates First Capital. At Aptean, Ford was responsible for all aspects of the company's business. At American Airlines, his duties included AMR's IT services (ITS) group, Operations Research and the airline's award-winning web site, Ford has held executive management positions with The Associates First Capital Corporation, Bank of Boston and Digital Equipment Corporation. He has served as a director of several institutions, as well as on the Research Board and CIO Strategy Exchange. As one of the first inductees to the CIO Hall of Fame by CIO Magazine, Ford has been a frequent guest writer for major technology publications on topics such as the future of the technology workforce, vendor relationship management and the role of the CIO.

A former cybersecurity executive Lauren M. Van Wazer has been named VP of Global Public Policy at Akamai Technologies. Van Wazer is a lawyer and engineer with more than 15 years of federal government and private sector experience in public policy and regulatory law related to technology, including cybersecurity, communications infrastructure, and national security. As former assistant director for cybersecurity at the Executive Office of the President’s OSTP, Van Wazer worked on R&D, draft legislation, supply chain risk management, incident response, privacy, and information sharing mechanisms.

Rackspace Hosting Hires CMO from VMware; Names Microsoft Veteran as Sales Leader

Web hosting and cloud hosting provider Rackspace Hosting has named IT industry veteran Rick Jackson Chief Marketing Officer. In this role, Jackson will lead Rackspace’s global marketing strategy and execution as the company works to strengthen its leadership position around hybrid cloud. Jackson has over 25 years of IT industry experience, most recently serving as CMO at VMware, where he was responsible for leading the company’s global marketing strategy since early 2009. Prior to joining VMware, Jackson served in the role of Chief Marketing Officer at Borland Software and BEA Systems. Jackson was also an early advocate of hybrid cloud computing, and shares Rackspace’s enthusiasm for open source-based cloud technologies and customer choice.

Rackspace Hosting also hired Todd Cione to lead the firm's Americas Acquisition Sales division. Cione brings more than two decades of experience developing successful sales and support teams across broad geographies. He spent his last 15 years at Microsoft, most recently based in Singapore and responsible for $4 billion in annual revenue for software, cloud services and enterprise services.

SuccessFactors Appoints VP of Product Management

SuccessFactors, a SAP AG company and a provider of cloud-based business execution software, has appointed Thomas Otter as VP of Product Management. A Gartner analyst and HR expert with 21 years of experience in the IT industry, Otter will help SuccessFactors evolve a new generation of HCM software and best practices. Otter has spent the past five years at Gartner, most recently as research VP covering HCM trends and technologies. Otter was Gartner's lead analyst on SAP from 2009 to 2011.

TeleTech Appoints General Counsel

TeleTech Holdings, the provider of technology-enabled customer experience solutions, has hired Margaret McLean to the position of SVP and General Counsel. McLean will be responsible for facilitating TeleTech's growth and investment goals from a legal and compliance perspective. McLean joins TeleTech from CH2M HILL, a $7 billion global engineering, construction and management company where she served as Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel. Prior to CH2M HILL, she was Partner M&A, Finance at Holme Roberts & Owen (now known as Bryan Cave Holme Roberts) a large full services law firm representing US and foreign clients.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. She also has been a featured speaker on leadership at numerous conferences and at Columbia University's MBA program.

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
