Universal Health Services Appoints Penn Mutual’s CEO to Board

Hospital management company, Universal Health Services, appointed Eileen C. McDonnell, 50, to its Board of Directors. McDonnell currently serves as President and CEO of The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company since 2011. She joined Penn Mutual in 2008 and previously served as President of the company. McDonnell was also appointed to The Penn Mutual Board of Trustees in 2010. Before joining Penn Mutual, she founded ExecMPower, a strategic planning and executive coaching consultancy. Previously, she was president of New England Financial, a wholly owned subsidiary of MetLife, and SVP of the Guardian Life Insurance Company.

Splunk Appoints Cardinal Health CIO to Board

Splunk, the leading software platform for real-time operational intelligence, appoints Patricia B. Morrison, 53, to the company's Board of Directors. Morrison has been EVP of Customer Care Shared Services and CIO for Cardinal Health since 2009. Prior to joining Cardinal Health, Morrison was CEO of Mainstay Partners, a technology advisory firm from 2008 to 2009, and EVP and CIO at Motorola from 2005 to 2008. Her previous experience also includes CIO of Office Depot, and senior-level IT positions at PepsiCo, The Quaker Oats Company, General Electric, and Procter & Gamble.

Semtech Appoints Board Member

Semtech, a supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors to the networking and storage markets, appointed Sylvia Summers, 59, to its Board of Directors. Summers has experience in engineering, business development and leadership, including serving as the CEO and President of Trident Microsystems from 2007 to 2011. Prior to that experience, she held senior positions at Spansion, Cisco and Storagetek. Summers currently serves on the Board of Headwaters, a public company providing product, technology and services to the heavy construction materials, light building products, and energy industries.

TelecityGroup Names Two Independent Non-Executive Directors

European data center operator and managed hosting provider TelecityGroup has named Claudia Arney and Nancy Cruickshank the company’s independent non-executive directors. Arney is an active and experienced board member with a strong background in technology and media. She currently serves as chairman of the Public Data Group, is a board member of Halfords and of Which?, and a UK advisory board member of Huawei. Arney’s career includes executive roles at Pearson, Goldman Sachs, Emap and also for HM treasury as director for its enterprise and growth unit.

Cruickshank is the current interim CEO for Weve, a mobile wallet joint venture between Vodafone, Everything Everywhere and O2. She is also the founder and CEO of UK Fashion and Beauty website In the past, Cruickshank served as executive consulting director of M&A for the Telegraph Media Group, global CEO for VideoJug, and managing director of [.tv], the technology channel of BSkyB.

TelecityGroup’s independent non-executive director Sahar Elhabashi is leaving the board to focus on full time on her executive position at Condé Nast’s entertainment division in the United States.

Xerox CIO Joins MedAssets Board

MedAssets appointed Carol J. Zierhoffer to its board of directors. Zierhoffer is VP and global CIO for Xerox. Prior to that, Zierhoffer was VP and global CIO for ITT. From 1988 to 2008, she worked with Northrop Grumman in various IT leadership positions, most recently as VP and CIO of the company's mission systems sector.

Procera Networks’ Director with Financial Insight Leaves

Elizabeth Huebner, 55, resigned from Procera Networks’ Board of Directors. Procera Networks is a provider of intelligent policy enforcement solutions that enables mobile and broadband network operators and entities managing private networks. Prior to retiring in 2006 after a 26-year career in the finance sector, she was CFO at Getty Images, a provider of visual content and rights services, from 2000 to 2006. Prior to that, she was CFO at Primus Knowledge Solutions, a software company specializing in knowledge management and self-service.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. She also has been a featured speaker on leadership at numerous conferences and at Columbia University's MBA program.

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
