HP Cloud Services Appoints Cloud Evangelist

Hewlett-Packard named Symform executive Margaret Dawson as the VP of product marketing and cloud evangelist for the company’s HP Cloud Services. Previously, Dawson served as Symform’s VP of product management and marketing. Dawson has more than 20 years of experience working in leadership roles at global technology start-ups and Fortune 500 companies, including Microsoft and Amazon.

Prior to Symform, she was head of product management and marketing for B2B cloud integration provider Hubspan. She has worked in Asia, Europe, and North America, including 10 years in the Greater China region, consulting with many top Taiwanese IT companies and governmental agencies as well as serving as foreign correspondent for BusinessWeek magazine. She is also a regular author and presenter on cloud computing, network security, integration, and other business and technology issues.

Rackspace Names Open Source Expert as VP of Intellectual Property

Cloud hosting provider Rackspace named intellectual property law veteran, Van Lindberg, as VP of intellectual property. Prior to Rackspace, Lindberg spent six years at Haynes and Boone, where he practiced property and patent prosecution with emphasis on open source licensing. During his time at Haynes and Boone, Lindberg analyzed multiple patent portfolios and provided IP advice and patent prosecution services to early-stage startups. Lindberg’s expertise plays well with Rackspace’s focus on OpenStack and seems to support the direction that Rackspace is zeroing in on in terms of open source, which is a huge component in its strategy in winning enterprise customers. Lindberg is chairman of the board of the Python Software Foundation, and has written a book on the open source licensing model, “Intellectual Property and Open Source.” In 2012, Lindberg was named one of “America’s Top 12 Techiest Attorneys” by the American Bar Association Journal.

CA Technologies’ EVP and Former IBM Exec Joins as CEO of Digital River

Leading provider of global e-commerce solutions, Digital River, appointed David C. Dobson, 50, as CEO and director. Dobson succeeds Digital River's Chairman Thomas Madison, who has served as interim CEO while the company conducted a search for a permanent replacement. Madison will continue to serve as the non-executive chairman of Digital River's board. Dobson joins Digital River from CA Technologies where he was EVP and group executive for the company's Global Lines of Business. Prior to joining CA Technologies in 2010, Dobson served as president of Pitney Bowes Management Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pitney Bowes. Also during his tenure at Pitney Bowes, Dobson served as EVP and chief strategy and innovation officer. Before coming to Pitney Bowes in 2008, Dobson was CEO of Corel, a global provider of leading software titles, including CorelDRAWR, WordPerfectR and WinZipR. In 2006, he was instrumental in leading the company's successful IPO. Before joining Corel in 2005, Dobson spent 19 years at IBM where he held a number of senior management positions, including corporate VP, Emerging Business Opportunities, and president and general manager, IBM Printing Systems Division. He currently serves on the board of International Decision Systems, a privately held, Minneapolis-based software company.

DataBank Holdings Names Marketing and Operations Leaders

Data center and colocation service provider DataBank Holdings has named Aaron Alwell as the VP of marketing. In his role, Alwell will take charge of all aspects of DataBank’s marketing, lead generation, and branding as well as lead the company’s entry into new markets. Alwell joined DataBank from AnoGenex, where he has served DataBank in a consulting role for the past year. Previously he served as the VP of marketing for national background screener USAFact. Alwell also served as the director of marketing for ViaWest and Dataside.

The company also named Michael Gentry the VP of operations. Prior to joining DataBank, Gentry served several years as the VP of managed service operations for SunGard Availability Services. During his tenure there he managed product engineering and the technical support of compute, storage, database and application management services. Before that, Gentry managed VeriCenter’s client experience as the VP of customer service.

Peak 10 Names Former AT&T Exec as VP and General Manager in Atlanta

Cloud hosting provider Peak 10 appointed Angela Haneklau as VP and general manager of the company’s Atlanta operations. In this position, Haneklau will be responsible for managing the overall operations of Atlanta data center including engineering, sales, business development and customer service. She has more than 25 years of experience in managing mid-sized business operations. Prior to Peak 10, Angela served as VP of enterprise North America sales at CommScope. She served as VP as well as in director positions in the sales and marketing division at Lucent Technologies. Haneklau also held positions within product management, marketing, strategy and business development at AT&T.

Xand Promotes CTO to CEO

Data center operator and cloud hosting provider Xand has promoted president and CTO Yatish Mishra, to president and CEO. Mishra has also been appointed to the company’s board of directors, in which he will lead all functions of Xand’s business including strategy, acquisitions, technology, operations, sales and finance. Since joining Xand, Mishra has overseen large revenue growth, many new construction projects, as well as the successful integration of three companies into one data center platform. Mishra has over 26 years of senior IT and executive leadership experience with an extensive background in the data center industry.

Earlier in his career, he served as co-founder, president and CEO of RagingWire Data Centers in a role where he led the company from inception to record growth in revenue and profitability. Prior to that, he was the corporate VP of IT Information at semiconductor provider Photronics in a role where he oversaw all global IT infrastructure and applications.

Cloud Automation Platform Appcore Names CTO

Cloud computing automation platform provider Appcore named cloud expert Michael Keen as its new CTO. Keen will be responsible for establishing the company’s technical vision and executing all aspects of Appcore’s product and software goals to deploy world class cloud technology. He joins Appcore from ASG Software, where he served as CTO. During this time, Keen oversaw the execution of the company’s go-to-market strategy for cloud computing. Prior to this, he served as the company’s chief enterprise cloud strategist. He also served as technology strategist at Lakeside Software, architect of worldwiwde consulting solutions at Citrix Systems, enterprise architect and strategist at visionapp, and enterprise strategist enterprise architecture groap at Alliance Technologies. Keen has also served as the liaison to the analyst community, including Gartner, Forrester, and EMA, for cloud and facilitated application of lessons learned and best practices across engagements to minimize risk and maximize value to the customer.

Former RedHat and Sybase Exec Joins UK Web Host ControlCircle as Chairman

ControlCircle named Colin Tenwick as chairman of the board. Tenwick brings significant experience to ControlCircle from successful tenures at companies such as AVG, StepStone ASA, Red Hat, Sybase and Ingres. He is currently the CEO of online booking, reservations and digital marketing company Livebookings, as well as the non executive director of the board at AVG.  His previous positions include European VP and General Manager for RedHat, European VP and General Manager for Sybase and Director of International Business at Ingres.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
