Ingersoll-Rand CIO Joins Baker Hughes

Baker Hughes appointed Archana “Archie” Deskus as CIO. She replaces Clif Triplett, who held the CIO position for four years before leaving recently. Deskus most recently served as vp and CIO of Ingersoll-Rand. She also has held CIO positions at Carrier North America and Timex Group.

RIM’s CIO Retires

Robin Bienfait retired as CIO of Research in Motion, after six years with the company. She'll continue to advise the company during the transition to the new mobile operating system, BlackBerry 10, which will launch early next year. As CIO, Bienfait has been in charge of RIM's enterprise services division. Prior to joining RIM, she held senior leadership positions within AT&T Labs and Global Network Services. She served as a Director of American Electronics Association.

ITC Holdings Hires CIO from Wolf Creek

Independent electric transmission company ITC Holdings appointed Ron Hinsley as VP, IT and CIO. Hinsley will lead IT activities and support all corporate applications including the Transmission Management System and Enterprise Resource Planning for ITC. Hinsley joins ITC from Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation, the operators of the Wolf Creek Generating Station in Kansas.. Prior to his role at Wolf Creek, Hinsley served as VP and CIO for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas and Aquila. He also brings experience as a North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) CIP-compliance consultant for CPS Energy, where he implemented a NERC CIP-compliant infrastructure to serve the company's energy development operations.

Former Top Pearson and Dex One Exec Joins as CIO at NBCUniversal

NBCUniversal has hired Atish Banerjea, 46, as EVP and CIO. Most recently, Banerjea served as CTO for Dex One, which he joined as it was making the transition from a print-centric publisher of yellow-books to a digital media marketing organization. During his time there he led a major redesign of Dex's IT operations that helped the company develop an extensive digital media operation. Prior to joining Dex One, Banerjea served as EVP and CTO at Pearson, where he was responsible for the global planning, deployment and management of more than $550 million in IT investment.

EchoStar Names Business Systems SVP and Tech Chief of Subsidiary

EchoStar hired Mahmood S. Mirza as SVP of business systems, IT and operations. In his new role Mirza will be responsible for the alignment of all IT strategy, business systems and IT technology across all EchoStar business units. Mirza , who has over 23 years of experience in the telecommunications field, has served as the chief technical officer or CIO or general manager at companies such as Disney Mobile, AT&T and American Management Systems.

SiriusXM Radio veteran executive Derek de Bastos has joined EchoStar Satellite Services, a subsidiary of EchoStar, as CTO. He will be responsible for the procurement, technical direction, and technical operations for EchoStar's satellite fleet and will manage a growing team responsible for systems engineering and program management. He joins ESS from SiriusXM Radio, where he was VP of engineering, a position he held since Sirius and XM merged in 2008. He was among the first employees of XM Satellite Radio and was the VP of satellite engineering for nine years preceding the merger, during which time he helped take the company from a vision to America's first nationwide digital satellite radio service.

CSC Exec Joins Serco as CIO

Chris Sullivan has joined government services company Serco as SVP and CIO. Prior to joining Serco, he was CIO of CSC’s North American Public Sector.  At CSC, he was responsible for the strategic direction, operations, and overall business management of the internal IT environment for a $6 billion business unit with more than 29,000 employees worldwide.  Before joining CSC, he held various positions in IT strategy, operations and software development at AT&T, DynCorp, and Network Access Solutions.

Finnish Oil Refining and Marketing Company Hires New CIO

Tommi Tuovila, 41, has been appointed Neste Oil's CIO. Tuovila will join from UPM-Kymmene, where he has served in various ICT management positions, most recently as VP, IT Application Services. Prior to UPM-Kymmene, Tuovila held similar positions like General Manager, IM Infrastructure & Architecture at Wärtsilä, and Program Manager at Nokia.

Tommi Tuovila will replace Kari Keskiivari, Neste Oil's current CIO, who will transfer to Neste Oil's Oil Products and Renewables business area, where he will be responsible for process and business model development.

Sauer-Danfoss Creates CTO Role

Engineered hydraulic and electronic systems company Sauer-Danfoss appointed C. Kells Hall, 64, the Company's EVP and President-Propel Division, to a newly created executive office position of EVP and CTO. Prior to this, he had been VP of the Propel Division. He has been with Sauer-Danfoss for more than 39 years in various management positions in Sales and Marketing, Operations, and Engineering.

Brink's Company Appoints BofA Tech Exec as CIO

The Brink's Company, a global leader in security-related services, named Patty Watson , 46, as CIO. Ms. Watson has nearly 15 years of IT and shared services management experience, most recently as the Senior Technology Executive for the treasury, credit and payments division of Bank of America. Prior to that, she was an officer in the United States Air Force for almost ten years, where she last served as Director of Operations.

Senior Technology Executive to Lead Umpqua Bank’s Continued Focus on Customer Experience

Umpqua Bank hired Sonny Sonnenstein as EVP and CIO. Sonnenstein brings more than twenty years of financial services experience to the organization and will lead Umpqua’s efforts to continue to innovate and enhance the customer experience. Before joining Umpqua Bank, Sonnenstein was the SVP and Group CIO for Corporate Systems and Information Management at First Horizon in Memphis. His career also includes senior strategy and technology positions with Wachovia, PwC, and as a principal and co-founder of Core Technology Partners.

AngioDynamics Promotes CTO to Chief Technology & Operations Officer

AngioDynamics, a leading provider of innovative, minimally invasive medical devices for vascular access, surgery, peripheral vascular disease and oncology, named George W. Bourne as SVP and Chief Technology & Operations Officer. Previously Mr. Bourne was SVP and CTO for the Company. Previous to joining AngioDynamics, he served as VP of R&D at Hologic, and before this served as SVP of R&D and Clinical Affairs for Navilyst Medical. He also served 10 years at Boston Scientific as VP, R&D, of the Urology, Meditech and Oncology business units and then as Group VP, R&D, for the endosurgery business group. Names Technology VP, the e-commerce company, has named Bhargav Shah as its new SVP of Technology. Shah has worked for KPMG as a director in its IT advisory group.  Previously, Shah had been with BearingPoint (formerly KPMG Consulting) for 10 years with increasing responsibilities from consultant through senior manager. Shah replaces Sam Peterson who will remain with the company for a transition period.  Peterson is joining Open English, an online English language learning school.

Diversified Financial Asset Recovery Company Appoints CTO

Swordfish Financial appointed Noel Trevino as Chief Technical Officer. His past appointments have been like Manager at Deloitte University and IT Support Manager and Technical Support Director at TD Industries. Earlier in his career he also served as Business Manager and Director of Media at Ortiz Media Group and Network Administrator at Knapp Medical Center.

Hulu CTO to leave

Rich Tom, Hulu's SVP and CTO, will also be leaving the streaming TV company soon. Before his current role, he served as Hulu's VP of advertising technology and operations overseeing the development of Hulu's advertising platforms and leading the sales operations strategy. Richard joined Hulu in 2007 after spending eight years at Microsoft in a variety of software development roles, from building database replication engines on the SQL server team to leading a team of engineers architecting the business application platform for Office Live, one of Microsoft's first entries into software as a service.

Music Mastermind Taps Muve Music and Napster Vet as CTO

Music Mastermind, which develops software which combines music creation, social gaming, celebrity musicians, and others in its games, tapped James Mitchell, as its new CTO. He is joining from Muve Music, where he was VP of Technology and Engineering. Mitchell also has served at CTO of Napster. Names Former Adobe Exec as New CTO, the online video education and tutorial site, has named Frits Habermann as CTO. Habermann joins from PopCap Games, a leading online game platform and a known provider of global-scale free online games. Prior to PopCap, he held a number of positions at Adobe, where he was instrumental in the development of InDesign. More recently, he held the position of VP of core technologies, supplying all the fundamental technologies to flagship products Photoshop, Acrobat, Flash, Illustrator and InDesign. Before Adobe, Habermann held several development and engineering management roles at RealNetworks, Edmark and Siemens.

Former Wells Fargo IT Exec Joins Televerde

Ken Simonelic was appointed as VP of IT for leading B2B marketing agency Televerde.  He is responsible for the company’s strategic use of data and technology in providing innovative products and services to clients, and ensuring the responsiveness and agility of the company’s digital assets and IT infrastructure. Prior to joining Televerde, Ken spent nine years providing IT leadership and strategic planning through his close collaboration with top executives of Fortune 500 companies, which included the banking, insurance, retail, and entertainment industries. At Wells Fargo, he served as VP, Data Services Group and VP, Business Intelligence & Forecasting.

IBM Exec and Former Gartner Analyst Joins Lancope as CTO

Lancope, the leading provider of flow-based monitoring to ensure high-performing and secure networks for global enterprises, appointed security industry expert Amrit Williams as CTO. He served at IBM as director of emerging security technologies and CTO for endpoint security, helping to define the overall security strategy with emphasis on analytics, cloud-computing, mobile and social media. Earlier in his career, he served as CTO for BigFix, establishing the company as a market leader in systems and security management, resulting in a successful acquisition by IBM in 2010. Prior to joining BigFix, Williams was an analyst with Gartner Research covering information security. He also previously served as the director of engineering for McAfee.

Former HP Exec Named CIO at Missouri University of Science and Technology

Greg Smith, CIO for George Fox University since 2004, has been named CIO of Missouri University of Science and Technology. He replaces Margaret Cline, who served as Missouri S&T's CIO from 2007 until her retirement in 2012. Prior to joining George Fox in 2004, Smith served as director of IT at the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). Before that, he was manager of computer operations for Best Access Systems, project manager and systems engineer for HP, director of computer services for ACZ, and systems analyst at Union Oil. He began as the owner of a computer store from 1980 to 1982 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

PR firm Hires New Global CIO

Edelman named Denis Edwards, formerly of Milwaukee-based Manpower Group, as global CIO. He will oversee the firm’s IT systems and infrastructure globally, including internal and client-facing solutions. At Manpower Group, Edwards oversaw IT operations in 82 countries. Prior to Manpower, Edwards held top IT leadership positions at both startups and large corporations including Cadbury-Schweppes (now Kraft), Marriott and PwC.

Weichert Realtors Names VP of Information Services

Peter Surhoff, a 25-year IT veteran and former VP of IT for Major League Baseball (MLB), has recently been named VP of Information Services at Weichert, provider of homeownership services. Before joining MLB in 1997, he was Manager Technical Services at Esselte Meto and Network Technician at Office Business Systems.

Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Sees CIO Replacement

Brian Abrahamson, an IT veteran with extensive experience in both the public and private energy sectors, has been named CIO for the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Abrahamson joined PNNL in 2011 and has served as chief enterprise architect at PNNL, responsible for leading a laboratory-wide improvement agenda that enhanced PNNL's IT systems. Prior to joining PNNL, Abrahamson acted as CIO and chief architect for San Francisco-based Pacific Gas and Electric Company, one of the nation's largest investor-owned utilities. He also spent 10 years with the management consulting organization Accenture and has several years' experience working in industry.

He replaces Jerry Johnson who has been CIO since 2004, and now will take on the role of senior policy and technical advisor to the Office of the CIO at DOE. Johnson will remain on staff at PNNL and split his time between Richland and Washington, D.C.

City of Colorado Springs Hires CIO from Jefferson County

Joe Palmer was appointed as CIO of City of Colorado Springs. Palmer was most recently CIO for Jefferson County. Earlier, he served as Senior Consultant at Oracular, ERP Manager at El Paso County, Finance Manager, Information Systems Analyst and Accountant at City of Nashville and Davidson County.

New CIO Named at University of California, Berkeley

Larry Conrad has been appointed as Berkeley’s next Associate Vice Chancellor for IT and CIO. He comes to Berkeley from the University of North Carolina (UNC), Chapel Hill, where he has served as their Vice Chancellor for IT and CIO for the last 5 years, overseeing the Division of IT Services as well as setting IT direction and coordinating infrastructure and service delivery across the University. Prior to UNC, he was the first CIO at Florida State University (FSU) and served in that role for 10 years. Preceding FSU, he served as an IT Director at Arizona State University for 10 years.

University of Southern Mississippi Appoints iCIO to Permanent Role of CIO

University of Southern Mississippi named David Sliman as the University’s new CIO. Sliman has been serving in that capacity on an interim basis since late 2011. Since 2004 Sliman has served as Director of Technology at Southern Miss Gulf Coast and Director of Technology Infrastructure Office on the Hattiesburg campus since 2008.

Health Insurance Company Names CIO

Neil Brandmaier was named SVP of IT and CIO for CDPHP (Capital District Physicians' Health Plan). Brandmaier will be responsible for providing and supporting a strategic vision and plan for information services. He will also manage the implementation of managed care information systems. Most recently, he worked for his own consulting firm, before which, he served as CTO and SVP at XL Group, and SVP at SIAC, NYSE and American Stock Exchange. Earlier in his career, he was Flight Test Engineer for Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

City of Tulsa CIO Resigns

Tom Golliver Resigned as CIO at City of Tulsa, in the wake of a botched attempt to test the city’s cybersecurity defenses. Golliver had been placed on administrative after his department mistakenly thought its website had been hacked, when it was really the work of SecurityMetrics, a Utah-based security testing firm the department had hired. The city took the website offline for two weeks and sent 90,000 letters to people who had used the website over the last decade to apply for jobs or file reports, to let them know their personal information might have been accessed. The city placed CIO Tom Golliver on paid leave earlier and named Tulsa Police Capt. Jonathan Brooks as its interim director.

Former Quest Executive Joins AppSense as CTO of Enterprise

AppSense, the people-centric computing company, named Jon Rolls as CTO of Enterprise. Prior to joining AppSense, Rolls served as VP of Product Management for Quest’s User Workspace Management group, which was acquired by Dell in 2012. Rolls brings more than 15 years of software industry and Windows management experience, including product management roles with Citrix, ScriptLogic, and virtualization and web acceleration startups.

BofA Senior Technology Exec Leaves to Join Stearns Lending

Stearns Lending, a leading nationwide mortgage lending institution encompassing retail, wholesale and correspondent business channels, appointed Uday Devalla to the role of CIO.  Uday Devalla brings 17 years of mortgage banking technology industry expertise, having held technology executive management positions with some of the largest mortgage banking companies in the nation.  Prior to joining Stearns, he was SVP – Technology Executive, for Bank of America Home Loans and EVP – Technology Executive, for Countrywide Home Loans.

University of Montana Hires CIO

The University of Montana has hired Matthew Riley for the position of CIO. Riley has been the director of IT at the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University since 2007. Prior to Stanford, he worked in IT, including as director of technical services, at the University of Redlands in Redlands, Calif., and as a programmer and analyst in the U.S. Air Force.

BoardProspects Adds VP of Technology

BoardProspects, the online community for the boardroom, named Ashton Adams as VP of Technology. With more than 16 years of experience in developing, launching and nurturing IT products, services and online properties, Adams will be responsible for leading BoardProspects’ online strategy and supporting increased awareness and community engagement on the platform. Adams joins BoardProspects from EveryMatrix, a mid-sized gaming software development company, where he served as CTO and country manager for China.

Contact Solutions Appoints CIO and VP of Product Management

Randy Holl was appointed as CIO at Contact Solutions, the customer self-service solutions provider. Mike McShea was appointed VP of Product Management. Prior to joining Contact Solutions, Holl was the CTO of Fidelity Information Services where he was responsible for the development and delivery of Fidelity's global, syndicated loan trading systems. Holl has also held various executive-level roles at VISICU, Notara and Marine Management Systems.

Prior to joining Contact Solutions, McShea was a business-line leader at Philips Healthcare, and has also held senior-level product management positions at ARINC, Citicorp Global Technology Infrastructure and Lockheed Martin.

Constant Contact and Saba Exec Joins Cloud-Based Health IT Company as CTO

CareCloud, a leading provider of cloud-based practice management, electronic healthcare record (EHR), revenue cycle management and medical billing software and services, hired John J. Walsh as its new CTO. Prior to joining CareCloud, he served as SVP, Engineering and Operations for Constant Contact. Before Constant Contact, he was SVP of Engineering and Operations for Ecora Software, VP and GM of Product Operations of Saba Software following its acquisition of Centra Software where he was SVP, Products and Operations.

Ericsson Exec Named New CIO at Fingerprint Cards

Jorgen Lantto was appointed as EVP, CTO and Head of Strategy & Product Management at Fingerprint Cards. He joins FPC from Ericsson where his most recent position has been VP Industry Area Telecom at the Ericsson’s CTO office. Over the past ten years, Jörgen Lantto has held senior executive positions and been responsible for a considerable part of Sweden’s semiconductor development for mobile phones as EVP and CTO of ST-Ericsson and as VP Strategic Product Management at Ericsson Mobile Platforms. He was also co-founder of the consulting firm Northstream and CEO of software company Alice Systems.

Sify Exec Joins as CTO at Cyber Security Solutions Company

Axxera, an emerging cyber security solutions company, added Bhaskar Sayyaparaju as its new CTO.  He formerly served as President - International Business of Sify. He joined Sify in 2006 as CTO. His prior positions were Director of Information Systems at Nvidia.

Poptent Hires Former Siebel Exec as its First CTO

Poptent, the global leader in crowdsourced video production, hired Charles “Sandy” Dondici as the company’s first CTO. Dondici comes to Poptent from PointRoll, where he served concurrently as COO and CTO for the company. Prior to PointRoll, now a wholly owned subsidiary of Gannett, Dondici held leadership roles with a variety of technology and software organizations, including Traiana and Siebel Systems, where he served as director of the firm’s Global Competency Practices unit.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
