McKesson Appoints New President of U.S. Pharmaceutical Business

McKesson appointed Mark Walchirk as president, McKesson U.S. Pharmaceutical. Walchirk succeeds Brian Tyler, who was recently appointed EVP of corporate strategy and business development. Walchirk, who was most recently COO of McKesson Specialty Health, has held numerous leadership roles at McKesson for the last 11 years, including COO of McKesson U.S. Pharmaceutical. Walchirk joined McKesson in 2001. He led McKesson's integration of US Oncology and assumed the role of COO for the newly combined organization, McKesson Specialty Health. Before joining McKesson, Walchirk spent 13 years in medical-surgical distribution and manufacturing with Baxter Healthcare, Allegiance Healthcare and Encompass Group, holding various leadership positions in sales, marketing, operations and business development.

Quest Diagnostics’ Health IT Leader to Leave

Quest Diagnostics’ senior leader Richard Mahoney, 64, VP, Healthcare Information Services, and President of MedPlus, its acquired healthcare IT subsidiary, is leaving the company next year. He is also a Special Advisor to the Miami (Ohio) University School of Entrepreneurship. Prior to joining MedPlus, he has served in leadership positions in a number of companies, most recently he was president of a company that provided equipment financing for hospitals and related organizations.

Former Aetna and WellPoint Exec Joins Verisk Health to Lead Client Development

Verisk Health named Kim Bresnan as EVP of client development for its MediConnect Global business. Verisk Health is a subsidiary of Verisk Analytics. Most recently as director of senior risk and recovery for WellPoint, she built sustainable data analytics programs. In the 18 years she spent at Aetna Health, Bresnan served in roles of progressively greater responsibility, from project manager to financial director of retiree markets, where she led the identification, development, and implementation of processes for revenue optimization and reconciliation of Medicare Advantage and prescription drug programs. Bresnan has also served in the roles of national product manager and VP of business development for Outcomes Health Information Solutions, where she led efforts to achieve significant revenue recovery for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

LEADS360 CEO Named COO at Quality Systems

Quality Systems, the practice management, electronic health records and revenue cycle management applications company, has named Daniel J. Morefield to the position of EVP and COO. Most recently, Morefield was president and CEO at LEADS360, the sales lead management company. Previously, Morefield was COO at Experian Consumer Direct, the largest consumer credit report monitoring business and parent of well-known brands such as and Morefield also served as CIO at Overture Services, the pioneer of the paid search concept including pay-for-performance and sponsored search options.

M*Modal Hires Sales EVP from OptumInsight

M*Modal appoints Mike Etue as EVP of Sales. Most recently, he served as VP of Sales and Marketing, Provider Markets for OptumInsight. Before that, he was SVP of Sales at Misys Healthcare Systems (unit acquired by Allscripts), and SVP of Sales at Eclipsys. He has also led a variety of sales executive and management roles at SMS/Siemens Medical Systems and served in hospital administration at several hospitals, including Mercy Memorial Hospital, People’s Community Hospital and Detroit Osteopathic Hospital in Detroit. He replaces Michael Clark, who has left the company to pursue other business interests.

Streamline Appoints Board Member and Promotes Strategy Exec

Streamline Health Solutions, the provider of enterprise content management and business analytics solutions for healthcare organizations, added Michael Valentine, CEO of Netsmart, to its Board of Directors. He joined Netsmart in 2011 from Cerner, where he served as EVP and COO. Prior to this role, he maintained ownership of client delivery and strategic partnerships for Cerner's worldwide operations, and was the driving force behind advancements made in standardization and centralization of Cerner's delivery model. Prior to joining Cerner, Mr. Valentine founded and managed a Midwest-based technology solutions and services company. Before that, he was an executive in telecommunications and technology industry groups at Andersen Consulting for seven years.

Matthew S. Seefeld has been appointed SVP, Solutions Strategy, managing the strategy around all of Streamline Health's solutions, as well as evaluating strategic partnerships and acquisitions. He joined Streamline Health as Chief Strategist, Revenue Cycle in 2011 with the acquisition of Interpoint Partners, where he was a co-founder and CEO.

Microsoft Veteran Hired by Ability Network as CTO

Microsoft veteran David Fusari has been hired as CTO for Ability Network, a fast-growing health IT and Web-based health network operator. Fusari served as principal architect for Microsoft Healthcare Solutions Group. Before that, he was CTO at Sentillion, which Microsoft bought. He also has worked for HP and Aetna.

Medecision Taps Industry Veteran to Lead Value-Based Healthcare Solutions

Medecision appointed Jerry Baker as SVP and general manager of the value-based health care solutions business unit. Most recently, Baker served as president and CEO of Halfpenny Technologies, an HIE provider offering a SaaS clinical solution integrating disparate hospital, laboratory, and EHR systems for physician groups, hospitals, and other provider organizations. Earlier in his career, Baker held c-level positions at healthcare SaaS provider MRO Corporation and the medical coding compliance software company Info-X (acquired by 3M). Prior to that, he held executive posts with HIT integrator Tier Technologies, physician practice management firm Advanced Health Technologies, as well as claims processing software provider HealthWorks (now Passport Health Communications) Alliance, and First Data Corporation, the global transaction management firm. Before beginning his career in healthcare, Baker was a Marine, leaving five years of active-duty service with the rank of captain.

Online Patient Registration Software Company Appoints CEO

RegisterPatient named Jana Skewes, former CEO of Shared Health, a provider of Web-based patient information software, as president and CEO. She collaborated with health systems, physicians, State Medicaid divisions, payers and employers to build one of the largest health information exchanges in the country. Prior to building Shared Health, Skewes was officer of a $5 billion health plan with P&L responsibility for all major product lines. Skewes has presented information on Capitol Hill and has testified before the National Governors Association on topics ranging from physician adoption of health IT, to information security, to interoperability. She also served on the statewide eHealth Council of Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen.

Leading Healthcare Revenue Cycle Management Company Hires Senior-Level Executives

Nav Ranajee, who formerly led the health care product divisions for Bank of America and Fifth Third Bank, has been named VP of sales and marketing at Pyramid Healthcare Solutions, the provider of revenue cycle management systems.

The company also named Angela Carmichael, former health information management product development specialist at J.A. Thomas & Associates, a provider of physician-oriented clinical documentation tools, as VP of coding and auditing at Pyramid Healthcare.

Healthcare Analytics Expert Joins as President of Health Care DataWorks

Health Care DataWorks named Jyoti Kamal, Ph.D., to full-time role of president at the leading healthcare analytics company. Kamal, with more than 15 years’ experience as a healthcare IT executive, is a founder of Health Care DataWorks and one of the visionaries behind the technology that became the foundation for the company’s KnowledgeEdge product suite. A foremost expert in healthcare analytics and speaker on all aspects of an Enterprise Data Warehouse, Kamal was Deputy CIO and Director for the Information Warehouse at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Change Healthcare Names New CEO

Change Healthcare, provider of healthcare cost transparency through its Transparency Messenger, has named Douglas Ghertner, the company’s president since 2011, its CEO. In addition, Howard McLure, the company’s current chairman and CEO, will assume the role of executive chairman of the board. Prior to joining Change Healthcare, Ghertner spent eight years in leadership positions with CVS Caremark, most recently as SVP of client solutions.

Nuvon Names CEO and Sales and Marketing VP

Nuvon, the industry-leading patient care data integration solution for Electronic Medical Records (EMR) device connectivity and interoperability, named Christopher Gatti, JD, MBA, to the position of CEO. Stephen Spencer has also been appointed as VP, Sales and Marketing, with Cathleen Asch transitioning from the position of CEO to EVP of Strategic Initiatives and continuing to serve on the Nuvon Board of Directors.

For more than 15 years, Gatti has provided executive leadership at a number of healthcare IT and analytics companies, most recently at ColdLight Solutions, an innovative data analytics company; Work Options Group, an international dependent care company where he led a successful recapitalization and turnaround (acquired by Bright Horizons Family Solutions - a Bain Capital Company); and Living Strategies, a national geriatric care management company he founded (acquired by Universal American Corporation).

Stephen Spencer most recently founded and led Advantis Medical, the designer and manufacturer of surgical and orthopedic instrument organization systems. In addition, he has held leadership positions with Carr Metal Products, Searle Life Support Systems, Kontron Medical Instruments, a division of Hoffman La Roche; Bristol Myers-Squibb’s Unitek dental division; and Hamilton Industries medical systems division of American Hospital Supply.

Central Logic Appoints Former Symantec VP as New CFO

Central Logic, the industry leader in hospital patient flow software solutions, named Steve Erickson as CFO. Erickson joins Central Logic from SageCreek Partners where he served as a partner and executive financial consultant. Prior to SageCreek Partners, Erickson was a VP at Symantec. Part of his responsibilities included the successful integration of the Altiris Business Unit within Symantec. He served as CFO of Altiris until the company was acquired by Symantec.

REACH Health Hires CTO from HealthPort

REACH Health, a leading provider of telemedicine technology solutions, hired Gene Guertin as CTO. An expert in the field of Healthcare IT, Gene has held leadership positions at technology companies providing strategic solutions for the healthcare community. For the past eleven years he has been with HealthPort Technologies, having served as both CTO and CIO.

ApeniMED Names New Board Members

ApeniMED, a vendor of health care interoperability and workflow management services, named Barbara Stinnett, CEO and managing partner of the Timmaron Group, which advises CEOs, boards and investors, and Duane Kullberg, a board member at the Chicago Board Options Exchange and Artio Global Investors, as new Directors.

Health IT Software Company Names VP of Clinical Solutions

MedHOK, one of the healthcare industry's fastest growing software companies, appointed Maryalice Anderson, RN, BSN, PMP, as VP of clinical solutions. Prior to joining MedHOK, Anderson was the director of healthcare practice for Highpoint Solutions, where she provided project management services for both payers and providers over a 10 year period, including Senior Whole Health, Health First Health Plans, BMC HealthNet Plan, and Amerihealth Mercy Health Plan. She also served as the senior director of resource management for Univera Healthcare.

Healthland Hires CFO from Epocrates

Healthland, market leader of healthcare IT solutions for rural hospitals, named Patrick Spangler to the position of SVP and CFO. Prior to joining Healthland, Spangler was the CFO for Epocrates, the point-of-care digital solutions company.  He was also an operating partner at Three Fields Capital investment management company and has held the role of CFO at HighJump Software, ev3 and Empi. In addition, Spangler served in senior management positions at both Medtronic and Tonka.

Online Pharmacy Appoints CFO, appointed Eduardo Altamirano as CFO. Eduardo joined earlier this year and prior to this promotion served as VP of Marketing & Communications. He brings a decade of experience in mergers and acquisitions, public and private corporate finance and equity research. His finance experience includes engaging in IPOs and private equity transactions while at companies that include Credit Suisse, UBS Investment Bank, and Roth Capital Partners.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
