Seagate Appoints Leader for its Solid State Drive Business

Seagate Technology, the leader in hard disk drives and storage solutions, re-appointed Gary Gentry to lead its solid state drive (SSD) business as SVP, SSD. Mr. Gentry will have responsibility for driving Seagate leadership in the SSD space, with time-to-market, competitive product offerings. Mr. Gentry has over 25 years of experience in the storage industry, including most recently as the General Manager of the Enterprise SSD Division of Micron Corporation. Prior to rejoining Seagate, he held leadership positions focusing on solid-state technologies at Spansion Corporation and Storage Genetics. He also served as CMO for Maxtor, and provided strategic consulting to Hitachi Global Storage Systems. While at Seagate he held various management positions including VP, Strategic Marketing and Planning.

Western Digital Announces Leadership Changes

Western Digital, the hard drive technology company, appointed Tim Leyden, 60, and Mike Cordano, 48, as Presidents of the company's WD (Western Digital) and HGST (Hitachi Global Storage Technologies) subsidiaries, respectively. Before the acquisition of HGST by Western Digital in March 2012, Leyden served as COO of Western Digital and Cordano served as EVP, Sales and Marketing and President, Branded Business Division of HGST.

Wolfgang U. Nickl, 43, was promoted from the position of SVP and CFO to the position of EVP and CFO. Prior to his role of SVP and CFO, he served as the Company's VP, Finance, VP, Worldwide Business Operations, and as Executive Director, Worldwide Business Operations, joining the Company in 1995.

Joseph R. Carrillo, VP and Chief Accounting Officer of Western Digital, has been appointed as Head of the Finance Organization for the Company's WD Division. Mr. Carrillo was previously employed as Audit Senior Manager by KPMG. He also served on the board at United Cerebral Palsy Association of Orange County.

LSI Promotes Executives to Key Leadership Positions

LSI Corporation appointed Greg Huff as CTO, with oversight of corporate strategy and technology roadmaps. Previously, he was SVP of Corporate Strategy for LSI. Huff joined the company in 2011 from HP, where he was VP and CTO of the company’s Industry Standard Server business. In that position, he was responsible for the technical strategy of HP’s ProLiant servers, BladeSystem family products and its infrastructure software business. Prior to that, he served as R&D Director for the HP Superdome product family.

Sudhakar Sabada has been appointed as EVP of the new Operations and Central Engineering group, to lead LSI's worldwide manufacturing operations and supplier relationships as well as foundational R&D, including foundry process technology, IP, product engineering and design for manufacturing. Prior to this, he held positions like SVP/GM Custom Solutions Division; SVP, Foundation R&D/Design Implementation; VP, Customer Design Engineering; VP, Design Technology; Senior Director, ASIC Implementation Methodology; Director, CAD; Department Manager, Physical Design; Manager, Physical Design Tools; and Engineer, Design Automation at LSI.

Phil Brace, 37, is now EVP of the newly formed Storage Solutions Group, to drive LSI's overall focus on enterprise and client storage technologies and assume overall management for hard disk drive (HDD) products such as SoCs and pre-amps; RAID chips and controller cards, serial attached SCSI (SAS) storage controllers and flash storage processors. He was SVP - Corporate Planning and Marketing of the Company. From 1993 through 2005, he held a number of marketing, sales and applications engineering positions at Intel, most recently as General Manager of Sever Platforms Group Marketing within the Digital Enterprise Group.

Advanced Micro Devices Promotes GM-Global Accounts to Chief Sales Officer

AMD announced that John Byrne, General Manager of Global Accounts, has been promoted to SVP and Chief Sales Officer. Byrne joined AMD in 2007. He has more than 24 years of experience in the IT industry, including leadership roles in technology sales and marketing. Byrne led AMD through a period of significant sales growth in North America, while also expanding the company's business in key Latin American emerging markets. Prior to that, he was corporate VP for AMD's Worldwide Channel Sales, where he grew the business by 65% in two years through the consolidation of the company's computing and graphics processor channels. Before joining AMD, Byrne was CEO of Advanced Technologies, a leading European sales and marketing organization that collaborated with global hardware and software companies including ATI Technologies and Cyberlink to successfully define and activate local channel sales and marketing strategies.

ShoreTel Hires Sales Exec from Nokia

ShoreTel, the the VoIP products company, named David Petts as SVP of Worldwide Sales. He comes to ShoreTel from Nokia, where he spent seven years in sales leadership roles. Leading global sales, marketing and services of security and mobility solutions for business customers as well as the global relationship with AT&T, Petts was responsible for driving long-term strategy as well as implementation and execution. Prior to Nokia, Petts held a number of executive management roles with HP and Compaq in both the U.S. and U.K.

IP-based Network Solutions Company Appoints COO

William Wong, 52, joins UTStarcom as COO. The company has plans of divestiture of the IPTV equipment business and the appointment of Mr. William Wong as CEO of the company to succeed Jack Lu, who will leave UTStarcom to lead the IPTV equipment business once the transaction closes. Mr. Wong brings over 25 years of technology industry experience spanning consumer technology, telecommunications infrastructure and semiconductors and has served in many executive positions, including as CEO of Borqs International, which produces software platforms for mobile operators and chip manufacturers. He served as director on UTStarcom's Board. Most recently, he helped lead Yellowstone Capital, a strategy and financial advisory firm supporting technology companies in China.

Digital Ally Appoints VP, Engineering to Board

Digital Ally, the digital video imaging and storage products company, elected Steven Phillips, 63, as director. Prior to that he was VP of Engineering a position he held since 2009. Prior to joining the Company he was an Engineering Team Manager at Garmin which he joined in 1998 to develop its second-generation GPS RF integrated circuit, which was used in all of Garmin's navigation products. Prior to that he worked for Puritan Bennett, a medical electronics company that produced mechanical ventilation and respiratory care devices, where he was responsible for oximetry and ventilator product engineering design teams. Prior to joining Puritan Bennett, he served as VP of Engineering at Birdview Satellite Communications, a microwave electronics design and manufacturing company.

IP Communications Solutions Company Names Worldwide Sales Head

TranSwitch Corporation appointed Timothy T. Blanke as VP - Worldwide Sales. He will be responsible for TranSwitch's worldwide sales strategy and execution including development of key accounts, sales channels and penetration of new markets. Prior to joining TranSwitch, Mr. Blanke held various sales management positions at ANADIGICS, most recently as Director, Asia Pacific (APAC) Sales, where he led the APAC team in the growth of wireless and broadband RF semiconductor products.

Data Center Management Software Company Appoints Directors

Rackwise appointed John Kyees, 65, and William Andrew as new directors. William Andrew is a private investor and is a co-founder and life member of the Andrew Family Foundation, a co-founder and president of the AFC Public Foundation, President of Andrew Trust Company, CEO of Werdna Corporation which is a family wealth management organization, co-founder and chair emeritus of the Board of Trustees of the Summit School of Ahwatukee, a general partner of the PE firm Inlign Capital Partners, a Limited Partner of and current member of the Executive Committee of the Arizona Diamondbacks, an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors of Valley Youth Theatre, a Director of the Arizona Community Foundation and a Trustee of Xavier College Preparatory.

John Kyees retired from active business practice in 2010 but continues to serve on the board of directors of 5 public companies (Casual Male Retail Group, Vera Bradley, Teavana, Hot Topic and Rackwise). Prior to retirement, he was CFO for several companies including Urban Outfitters, bebe Stores, Skinmarket, HC Holdings, Ashley Stewart, Limited’s Express, Chas. A. Stevens (division of Hartmarx), J.L. Hudson Co. (division of Dayton Hudson which became Target), The Model A and Model T Motor Car Reproduction, and Ford Motor.

ERF Wireless Names COO to Expand Management Depth and Accommodate New Growth Opportunities

ERF Wireless named Tom Wiedebush, 67, as COO to take over all of the day-to-day high-level operational management responsibilities previously being conducted by its CEO. Mr. Wiedebush joined the ERF Board of Directors in 2011 bringing more than 35 years of experience as a banking executive to ERF Wireless.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
