American Express Appoints SVP of Technology

American Express announced that Neal Sample has joined the company as SVP of Technology. In this position, he will be responsible for Serve, the company’s digital commerce platform. Most recently, Sample served as the CTO of X.commerce, eBay's open development and commerce platform. Before joining X.commerce, he was the VP of Architecture & Platform Products at eBay. Prior to eBay, Sample served as the VP of Social, Open & Participation Platforms at Yahoo! While at Yahoo!, he also held the title of Chief Architect. Earlier in his career, he was the Chief Scientist at RightOrder and completed a post-doctoral research fellowship with the CIA’s Office of R&D. 

CIO Departure at Lowe’s

Lowe's announced that EVP & CIO Michael Brown, 47, has announced his plans to accept the company's Voluntary Separation Program and retire after serving the company for over 25 years. During his long tenure with the company, he has served in numerous senior roles, including EVP of Store Operations, SVP of Store Operations, Regional VP, VP of Specialty Sales, and VP of Merchandising. Brown will continue to serve in his current role until a replacement is selected.

American Electric Power Appoints Interim CIO

American Electric Power (AEP) has named Michael Rozsa, the Managing Director of IT Business Applications, as the company’s Interim CIO. While at AEP, he has also served as the Managing Director of Enterprise Architecture & Development and Director of Utilities IT System Planning. Earlier in his career, he served as the Manager of IT at The Longaberger Company and as a Systems Analyst at Convergys.

NYSE Euronext Names Global CIO

NYSE Euronext has appointed Dr. Peter Leukert as Global CIO.  Most recently, he served as the CIO of Commerzbank, Germany's second largest bank. Before joining Commerzbank, Leukert worked as a Partner at McKinsey & Company.

CTO Departs from RIM

Research in Motion announced that CTO David Yach has retired after more than 13 years with the company. While at RIM, Yach managed teams that created software ranging from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to the applications, operating systems, and radio firmware on BlackBerry smartphones. Prior to joining RIM, he was the VP & Chief Architect at Sybase.

Southwest Airlines Hires Pepsi CIO

Southwest Airlines announced that Randy Sloan has been named VP & CIO. Most recently, he was the SVP & CIO for PepsiCo International. While at PepsiCo, he also served as the VP & CIO for PepsiCo's European businesses and as the VP of Enterprise Systems Development. Prior to PepsiCo, Sloan served as a programmer at Texas Instruments.

Pitney Bowes Selects New Chief Technology & Strategy Officer

Pitney Bowes announced the appointment of Joe Timko to the position of EVP and Chief Technology & Strategy Officer. Most recently, he served as the company’s EVP and Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer. Before joining Pitney Bowes, Timko was a Partner at McKinsey & Company. Earlier in his career, he served as a Product Manager at Alcatel-Lucent.

NII Holdings Recruits New CIO

NII Holdings, a provider of mobile communication services in Latin America, announced that it has appointed Dave Truzinski as VP & CIO. Most recently, Truzinski was the SVP & CIO at Leap Wireless/Cricket Communications. Prior to joining Leap, he was CIO for Cingular/AT&T Wireless' International Business. He also served as CTO at ClickCollect and as CIO at Earlier in his career, he held a variety of leadership roles at Cingular/AT&T Wireless.

Financial Services Company Selects CISO

Synovus Financial has announced the selection of Susan Koski as Chief Information Security Officer. Most recently, she served as the Managing Director for Global IT Risk, Information Security & Vendor Assessments at BNY Mellon. Before that, she was the Manager of Global Network and Perimeter Defense at Mellon Financial. Koski began her career as a Software & Validation Testing Engineer at Westinghouse Electric.

Online Marketplace Loses CIO

Liquidity Services announced the resignation of CIO Eric Dean, 58. Before joining Liquidity Services, he was the CIO of Schaller Anderson. Prior to Schaller Anderson, Dean was the SVP & CIO of United Airlines. Earlier in his career, he served as the Managing Partner & CIO of Arthur Andersen and Andersen Worldwide.

Co-founder & CTO Leaves TiVo

TiVo, a provider of digital video recorders, announced that James Barton, 52, has resigned from his position as SVP & CTO. He will continue to serve as a consultant to the company. Barton is a Co-founder of the company and has also served as its SVP of R&D and as a Director. Before Co-founding TiVo, he served as the President & CEO of Network Age Software, a company that he founded to develop software products targeted at managed electronic distribution. Prior to that, he was the CTO of Interactive Digital Solutions Company, a joint venture of SGI and AT&T Network Systems created to develop interactive television systems. Earlier in his career, Barton served as the VP & GM of the Media Systems Division and Systems Software Division of Silicon Graphics and held management positions with HP and Bell Laboratories.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. She also has been a featured speaker on leadership at numerous conferences and at Columbia University's MBA program.

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
