Google VP Resigns to Form Startup

Google announced the departure of VP of Apps Dave Girouard. He is leaving to start his own venture which Google Ventures plans on investing in. Before being named VP of Apps, Girouard served as VP & GM of Google’s Worldwide Enterprise business. Before joining Google, he served at Virage as SVP of Marketing & Corporate Strategy, VP & GM of Virage Interactive, and Director of Product Marketing. Prior to Virage, Girouard was a Product Manager at Apple in the Worldwide Product Marketing Group and an Associate in Booz Allen & Hamilton’s IT practice.

Sundar Pichai, the current SVP of Chrome, will assume the vacant role of VP of Apps. Before being named as the SVP of Chrome, he served as VP of Product Management. Prior to joining Google, Sundar held various engineering and product management positions at Applied Materials and served as a Management Consultant at McKinsey. Earlier in his career, he was a Director at Jiva Software.

Yahoo! Loses SVP

Yahoo! announced the departure of Bill Shaughnessy, the company’s SVP of Product Management. He came to Yahoo! from Microsoft where he served in various roles, including Global VP of the Sales, Marketing & Services in the Advertiser Publisher Solutions Group. Prior to this role, Bill was GM of Microsoft’s Digital Advertising Solutions Business Group. Currently, he serves as a Director of Mixpo.

CTO Departure at AOL

AOL announced the resignation of EVP & CTO Alex Gounares, 38. Gounares came to AOL from Microsoft, where he most recently served as VP of Advertising R&D and CTO for the Online Services Division. At Microsoft, he also served as Technical Assistant to Bill Gates, VP of Corporate Strategy, and Development Manager for the Tablet PC team.

EVP & CSO Leaves Online Consumer Products Retailer


United Online announced the resignation of Frederic Randall as EVP & Chief Strategy Officer. He will continue as a consultant to the company for a period of one year. Before joining United Online, he served as SVP, General Counsel & Secretary at NetZero and as a Partner at Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison.

Former Microsoft Exec Joins Online Marketing Services Company


ReachLocal has hired Kris Barton to serve as the company’s new Chief Product Officer. He joins ReachLocal from Nero, a multimedia software company, where he was the COO. Before Nero, he served as a Product Unit Manager at Microsoft and held a number of product positions at Omniture and Novell. Currently, Barton serves as a Director at OrganikID.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She also has been a featured speaker on leadership at numerous conferences and at Columbia University's MBA program.

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults, garage.ca, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
