Former Symantec CEO Joins Microsoft Board; Former Cisco SVP Named VP
Microsoft announced that John Thompson, 62, has joined the company’s Board. Currently, Thompson serves as the CEO of Virtual Instruments, a provider of virtual infrastructure and SAN optimization. Before joining Virtual Instruments, he was the Chairman & CEO of Symantec. Earlier in his career, Thompson held senior leadership positions at IBM, including GM of IBM Americas. He currently serves on the board of directors at UPS, Seagate Technology, and Teach for America.
The company also named Laura Ipsen, 47, as Corporate VP of its Worldwide Public Sector division. Most recently, she served as SVP & GM of the Connected Energy Networks division at Cisco Systems. Prior to joining the Connected Energy Networks division, Ipsen was the SVP & GM of the Smart Grid Business unit at Cisco. She currently serves on Monsanto’s Board of Directors.
Dell Appoints President of Software Group
Dell announced the appointment of John Swainson, 57, to serve as President of the Software Group. Most recently, he served as a Senior Advisor at Silver Lake, a global private equity firm. Prior to Silver Lake, Swainson was the CEO of CA Technologies. Before CA, he served at IBM for more than 26 years, most recently as GM of the Application Integration Middleware Division. He also led the IBM worldwide software sales organization and held numerous senior leadership roles in engineering, marketing, and sales.
Former HP Exec Selected as Intel’s New Chief Security Architect
Brian Hernacki, the former Chief Architect of webOS, has joined Intel as the company’s new Chief Security Architect. Before his work with webOS, he was the Chief Security Architect at Palm. Earlier in his career, Hernacki served as a Researcher at Symantec, Chief Scientist at Recourse Technologies, and Software Engineer at Netscape Communications.
CSO Leaves AMD
Advanced Micro Devices announced that Emilio Ghilardi, 52, the company’s SVP & Chief Sales Officer, has resigned from his responsibilities at the company. During his time at AMD, he also served as the SVP & GM of EMEA region. Before joining AMD, he held several titles at HP, including VP & GM of the EMEA Consumer Business Unit, VP & GM of EMEA Consumer Hardware, and Chairman of HP Italy. Rory Read, AMD’s President & CEO, will serve as the Interim CSO until a replacement is found.
