Former Symantec CEO Joins Microsoft Board

Microsoft announced that John Thompson, 62, has joined the company’s Board. Currently, Thompson serves as the CEO of Virtual Instruments, a provider of virtual infrastructure and SAN optimization. Before joining Virtual Instruments, he was the Chairman & CEO of Symantec. Earlier in his career, Thompson held senior leadership positions at IBM, including GM of IBM Americas. He currently serves on the board of directors at UPS, Seagate Technology, and Teach for America.

Former White House Official Joins Emerson Electric Board

Emerson Electric announced that Joshua Bolten, 57, has been appointed to its Board. Bolten is the MD of Rock Creek Global Advisors, an international business advisory firm. Before founding Rock Creek, he served as the 22nd Chief of Staff under President George Bush and as General Counsel to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. After leaving government service, he was a visiting Professor at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. Earlier in his career, he served at Goldman Sachs in London. Currently, he sits on the boards of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund.

Yahoo! Appoints Pair of New Board Members

Yahoo! has selected Alfred Amoroso, 61, to join the company’s Board. Currently, he serves as the CEO of Rovi, a digital entertainment technology leader. Before joining Rovi, he served as an Advisor to Warburg Pincus, an investment firm. Before that, he was the CEO & Vice Chairman of META Group, an IT research and advisory firm. Amoroso has also served as the CEO of CrossWorld Software, a provider of business infrastructure software. Earlier in his career, he held various management positions with IBM.

Maynard Webb, 55, has also joined the Board of Directors at Yahoo! Webb is the founder of Webb Investment Network. He also serves as the Chairman of LiveOps, a provider of contact center solutions. Before transitioning into the Chairman role, he served as the CEO of LiveOps. Prior to LiveOps, he was the CEO of eBay and the President of eBay Technologies. Earlier in his career, he served as the CEO at Extensity, SVP & CIO at Gateway, VP & CIO at Bay Networks, and Director of IT at Quantum. Currently, he serves on the boards of, AdMob, Hyperion Solutions, PerkettPR, Baynote, and Gartner. He has also held advisory positions with George Bush’s National Infrastructure Advisory Council, the Engineering Advisory Board at Santa Clara University, and Meg Whitman’s 2010 Gubernatorial Finance Committee.

Communications Infrastructure Company Loses Board Member

Crown Castle International announced the resignation of Director David Abrams, 49. Currently, he serves as the President of Abrams Capital and as a Member of the Board at CC Media Holdings. Earlier in his career, he was a board member at USA Mobility and Global Signal.

CSC Appoints Non-Executive Chairman

Computer Sciences Corporation, an IT and business services company, has appointed Rodney Chase, 68, as Non-Executive Chairman. He has served as a member of the CSC Board since 2001. Currently, Chase also serves as the Non-Executive Chairman of Genel Energy, an international oil and gas exploration company. Previously, he was the Deputy Group CEO & Managing Director of BP, Deputy Chairman of Tesco, Lead Director of Nalco, and a Director of Tesoro.

Intralinks CEO Joins Simulation Software Board

ANSYS has selected Ronald Hovsepian, 49, to join the company’s Board. Currently, he serves as the CEO of Intralinks and as the Non-Executive Chairman of Ann Taylor. Previously, he served as the CEO at Novell and as the Worldwide GM of Distribution Industries at IBM. Earlier in his career, he was a managing director with several venture capital firms, including Bear Stearns Asset Management and Internet Capital Group.

Board Member Leaves Latin American Mobile Service Provider

NII Holdings announced the resignation of Raymond Dolan, 53, from its Board. Currently, he serves as the CEO at Sonus Networks and as a Member of the Board at American Tower. Before joining Sonus, Dolan was the CEO of QUALCOMM Flarion Technologies. Prior to QUALCOMM, he was the COO of NextWave Telecom and held a variety of roles at BellAtlantic/NYNEX Mobile. Earlier in his career, Dolan served as an Officer in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Board Appointment at Process Equipment Solutions Provider

Veeco Instruments announced that Keith Jackson, 56, has been appointed to its Board of Directors. Currently, he serves as the CEO of ON Semiconductor, a global supplier of high performance silicon solutions for energy efficient electronics. Before joining ON Semiconductor, Jackson served as the EVP & GM of the Analog, Mixed Signal, and Configurable Products Groups at Fairchild Semiconductor. He has also served as the President & Director of TriTech Microelectronic, a manufacturer of analog and mixed signal products.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
