Former Symantec CEO Joins Microsoft Board; Former Cisco SVP Named VP

Microsoft announced that John Thompson, 62, has joined the company’s Board. Currently, Thompson serves as the CEO of Virtual Instruments, a provider of virtual infrastructure and SAN optimization. Before joining Virtual Instruments, he was the Chairman & CEO of Symantec. Earlier in his career, Thompson held senior leadership positions at IBM, including GM of IBM Americas. He currently serves on the board of directors at UPS, Seagate Technology, and Teach for America.

The company also named Laura Ipsen, 47, as Corporate VP of its Worldwide Public Sector division. Most recently, she served as SVP & GM of the Connected Energy Networks division at Cisco Systems. Prior to joining the Connected Energy Networks division, Ipsen was the SVP & GM of the Smart Grid Business unit at Cisco. She currently serves on Monsanto’s Board of Directors.

Former HP Exec Selected as Intel’s New Chief Security Architect

Brian Hernacki, the former Chief Architect of webOS, has joined Intel as the company’s new Chief Security Architect. Before his work with webOS, he was the Chief Security Architect at Palm. Earlier in his career, Hernacki served as a Researcher at Symantec, Chief Scientist at Recourse Technologies, and Software Engineer at Netscape Communications.

Dell Appoints President of Software Group

Dell announced the appointment of John Swainson, 57, to serve as President of the Software Group. Most recently, he served as a Senior Advisor at Silver Lake, a global private equity firm. Prior to Silver Lake, Swainson was the CEO of CA Technologies. Before CA, he served at IBM for more than 26 years, most recently as GM of the Application Integration Middleware Division. He also led the IBM worldwide software sales organization and held numerous senior leadership roles in engineering, marketing, and sales.

Starbucks CIO Joins Symantec Board

Symantec announced that Stephen Gillett, 35, the CIO & EVP of Digital Ventures at Starbucks, has joined its Board. Prior to joining Starbucks, Gillett was the CIO & SVP of Engineering at Corbis, a digital media company. Before Corbis, he was the Senior Director of Engineering at Yahoo! and VP of Information Systems at CNET Networks. Gillett was named one of Fortune Magazine's 40 Under 40 in 2010 and was recognized as the 2011 'Chief of the Year' by Information Week.

Interactive Entertainment Software Company Appoints Talent Officer

Activision Blizzard promoted Humam Sakhnini, the EVP of Corporate Strategy and Business Development, to the newly created position of Chief Strategy and Talent Officer. Prior to joining Activision, he was a Partner with McKinsey & Company’s Global Media & Entertainment Practice. Earlier in his career, Sakhnini founded and co-led ISGroup, a financial technology firm that provided technology solutions for mutual funds and hedge funds.

CFO Departs from Electronic Arts

Electronic Arts, a developer and publisher of interactive entertainment and games, announced the resignation of Eric Brown, 46, the company’s EVP & CFO. Prior to joining EA, he served as COO & CFO at McAfee. Before McAfee, he was the CFO of MicroStrategy, a business intelligence software provider. He currently serves on the Board of Directors at Electronics for Imaging. Kenneth Barker, EA’s SVP & CAO, will serve as the Interim CFO.

BI Provider Promotes VP of Finance to PAO

Qlik Technologies announced the promotion of Dennis Johnson to Principal Accounting Officer. He earlier served as the company’s VP of Finance and Director of Accounting & External Reporting. Prior to joining Qlik, he was the VP of Finance & Corporate Controller at MEDecision, a health management solutions company. Earlier in his career, Johnson was the Assistant Controller at Verticalnet, a supply management solutions provider, and a Senior Accountant at Arthur Andersen.

Enterprise Systems Software Company Appoints CEO

Quest Software announced the resignation of CEO Douglas Garn, 52. Garn has decided to step down due to health reasons but will continue to serve the company in the newly created role of Vice Chairman. Vincent Smith, 47, the company’s Executive Chairman, has been appointed as the new CEO. From 1997 to 2008, Smith held the title of CEO at the company. Before joining Quest, he served as the VP of Worldwide Sales & Marketing at Patrol Software NA and as the Director of Open Systems at BMC. Smith has also held a variety of sales management positions at Oracle.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. She also has been a featured speaker on leadership at numerous conferences and at Columbia University's MBA program.

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
