Google Elects Former VMware Exec to Board

Google has elected Diane Greene, 55, to its Board. Greene is the Co-founder and former CEO of VMware. Earlier in her career, she served as an EVP at EMC and held technical leadership positions at Silicon Graphics, Tandem, and Sybase. Currently, Greene serves on the Board of Directors at Intuit.

Board Member Leaves HP

Dr. Sari Baldauf, 55, has resigned from the Board at HP. She is the former EVP & GM of the Networks Business Group at Nokia. Before being named as EVP, Baldauf was the President of Nokia Cellular Systems. She currently serves as a Director at Daimler AG. Baldauf is a Knight, 1st Class, of the Order of the White Rose of Finland. She is also a Member of the Finnish Academy of Technology.

Cosmetics Company Hires eCommerce Veteran

Ulta Beauty announced that Catherine Halligan has been appointed to its Board of Directors. Currently, Halligan serves as an Advisor at PowerReviews, a provider of social commerce and customer reviews solutions. Before being named as an Advisor, she was the company’s SVP of Sales & Marketing. Prior to joining PowerReviews, she served as the VP of Market Development for Global eCommerce at Walmart. She has also served as the CMO at, Associate Partner at Prophet, VP of Direct Marketing for Blue Nile, and VP & GM of Internet at Williams Sonoma. She began her career as a Marketing Coordinator at Lands' End.

Retail Company Recruits Google’s Global Marketing Head

Williams-Sonoma has elected Lorraine Twohill, the Global Marketing Head of Google, to serve on the company’s Board. Before being appointed as the Global Marketing Head, she served as the VP of Marketing for EMEA at Google. Before joining Google, she was the Head of Marketing for Opodo Limited, an Internet travel agency website. Twohill was named as Adweek's Grand Brand Genius in 2001 for her efforts in shaping Google's marketing efforts.

Advertising Company Loses Board Member

Margaret Covell has announced her resignation from the Board at Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings, a global outdoor advertising company. Currently, Covell serves as a Managing Director at Thomas H. Lee Partners, a private equity firm. Before joining Thomas H. Lee Partners, she served as a Partner at the Monitor Group, a global strategic advisory firm where she led the firm’s Operations Strategy Business Unit.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. She also has been a featured speaker on leadership at numerous conferences and at Columbia University's MBA program.

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
