Big Tech Changes at HP

HP announced that Shane Robison, 56, is retiring as EVP and Chief Strategy & Technology Officer. Robison was also responsible for the company’s strategy and corporate development efforts, including mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, intellectual property licensing, and partnerships. Robison came to HP from Compaq, where he served as the SVP of Technology and CTO. Prior to joining Compaq, he served as the President of Internet Technology and Development at AT&T Labs. He has also held senior positions at Cadence Design Systems and Apple Computer.

John Hinshaw, 41, has been appointed to the newly created position of EVP of Global Technology & Business Processes. He will oversee information technology and shared and administrative services. Hinshaw comes to HP from The Boeing Company, where he was VP & GM of Boeing Information Solutions. Prior to that role, he was Boeing’s Global CIO. Before joining Boeing, Hinshaw served as SVP & CIO at Verizon Wireless. Earlier in his career, he was a consultant with Accenture. Currently, Hinshaw serves on the CIO Advisory Board of NCR Teradata. He was awarded the 'CIO 100' award for Agility in Information Technology by CIO Magazine in 2004.

HP has promoted Craig Flower, 49, to SVP & CIO. Flower has been with HP for over 25 years and has held positions in various sectors, including eBusiness, customer and sales operations, and marketing. Most recently, he was the SVP of Data Management & IT Services. Flower has also served as the Global IT SVP for eBusiness, Customer & Sales Operations (ECO).

VP, Global Security Leaves Apple

John Theriault, Apple's VP of Global Security, has left the company following the controversial lost iPhone 4S investigation earlier this year. At Apple, he was responsible for all of the company’s security operations and led an anti-counterfeit team in 2008 focused on China's growing counterfeit product market. Theriault joined Apple in 2007 after a decade at Pfizer, where he served as CSO and then as a VP. Prior to his professional career in the corporate environment, Theriault was an FBI Special Agent.

New CTO at Yahoo!

Raymie Stata, 43, has stepped down as Yahoo's CTO, but will remain at the company as an Entrepreneur in Residence. During his time at the company, Stata oversaw search and advertising technology work, as well as the development of Yahoo's cloud computing technology. Ash Munshi will replace Stata as the new CTO. Most recently, Munshi served as the Corporate Vice President at Applied Materials, where he was responsible for software and automation. Prior to Applied Materials, he was the VP & GM of the Enterprise Business Unit at Silicon Graphics and Director of Development & Marketing of the Tools Division at Oracle.

Akamai Appoints CIO

Akamai Technologies announced that Kumud Kalia has been selected to be the company's new CIO. Prior to Akamai, Kalia ran the Information Services organization for Direct Energy, an energy and services business. Before joining Direct Energy, he was VP & CIO of the Business Markets Group of Qwest Communications International. Kalia was named 'Best in Class' among the Premier 100 IT Leaders for 2008 by Computerworld and has led teams that received CIO 100 and InfoWorld 100 awards for technology innovation in business.

Former Apple & IBM Exec as CTO at AMD

AMD announced that Mark Papermaster, 50, has joined the company as SVP & CTO. Most recently, Papermaster was VP of Silicon Engineering at Cisco. Before joining Cisco, he served as Apple's SVP of Devices Hardware Engineering and was responsible for iPod and iPhone hardware development. Earlier in his career, Papermaster held several senior roles at IBM, including VP of Microprocessor Technology Development and VP of the Blade Development Unit.

Microsoft Veteran Selected for CTO Role at Cincinnati Bell Subsidiary

CyrusOne, a provider of corporate colocation services, announced that it has hired Kevin Timmons as the company's new CTO. Most recently, Timmons served as the GM of Datacenter Services at Microsoft. Before joining Microsoft, he was the VP of Operations at Yahoo! and the Director of Operations at GeoCities.

Insurance Company Recruits CIO

Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America has named Jeff Palm as the company’s new SVP & CIO. Palm comes to Allianz Life from RBC Dain Rauscher, where he most recently served as the MD of Technology. Prior to RBC Dain Rauscher, Palm held senior technology leadership roles at Fingerhut, American Express, and Booz Allen Hamilton.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. She also has been a featured speaker on leadership at numerous conferences and at Columbia University's MBA program.

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
