The software industry is witnessing rapid transformation – from increasing shareholder activism to more diverse boards, from geographic expansion to acquisitions - the following board and leadership moves reflect all these trends. Here are the major changes from July 28th to September 23rd, 2017.

Board Moves

  • Activist Investor Not to Seek Re-Election to Microsoft Board; PepsiCo CFO to Join as Director - Microsoft board member D. Mason Morfit, 41, ValueAct Capital’s President and Chief Investment Officer, will not seek re-election. The board has appointed Hugh Johnston, 55, as Director. Johnston is vice chairman and CFO of PepsiCo. 
  • Salesforce Gets Influential Health Care Exec to Board - Bernard J. Tyson, 58, chairman and CEO of Kaiser Permanente, joined Salesforce’s board. 
  • Charles Giancarlo Resigns as ServiceNow Director - In connection with his appointment as CEO of Pure Storage, Charles Giancarlo, 60, resigned from the Board of ServiceNow. Former Avaya CEO.
  • Red Hat Announces New Chairman - Narendra K. Gupta, 68, co-founder of Nexus Venture Partners and long time director named as Chairman of the board. Succeeds retired U.S. Army Gen. H. Hugh Shelton, 75, who recently retired as chairman.
  • Constellation Software’s New Board Member Comes with Corporate Governance, Corporate Culture, And Corporate Law Preeminence - Constellation Software’s newest board member is Lawrence Cunningham, 55, Henry St. George Tucker III Research Professor at George Washington University Law School.
  • Citrix Appoints 30+ year Software and Technology Industry Veteran as Director - Citrix Systems elected Dr. Ajei S. Gopal, 55, President and CEO for ANSYS, to board. 
  • Splunk’s Newest Board Members Bring Valuable Perspectives and Diverse Experience in Leadership Roles - Splunk named Sara Baack, 45, CMO of Equinix, and Elisa Steele, 50, former CEO and president of Jive Software, to its Board. Long-standing director David Hornik has retired from the Board.
  • Technology Innovator Joins PTC Board - PTC appointed Dr. Corinna Lathan, CEO, Co-Founder, and Board Chair of AnthroTronix, as newest board member.
  • athenahealth Taps New Board Member - Athenahealth appointed Brian McKeon, 55, current CFO of IDEXX Laboratories, to its Board. 
  • Tesla CFO Leaves FireEye’s Board; ADC Vet Joins - Tesla CFO Deepak Ahuja, 54, notified FireEye of his decision to resign from the Board. ADC veteran Robert Switz, 71, has been appointed to the board.
  • Twitter Replaces Hugh Johnston on Board - Twitter board member Hugh Johnston, Pepsi vice chairman and CFO, left Twitter’s board to join Microsoft’s board. The micro-blogging company named Patrick Pichette, a former CFO of Google, as new Board Member.
  • Zendesk Appoints Director with Global Enterprise Software Sales Expertise - Customer service software company Zendesk named Hilarie Koplow-McAdams, 53, CRO at New Relic, to its Board. 
  • Verint Combines Chair-CEO Roles After Chairman’s Demise - Verint Announces the Passing of Chairman, Victor DeMarines, at the age of 80. The board unanimously appointed President, CEO and current Director Dan Bodner, 57, as Chairman. Board member John Egan, 59, will serve as Lead Independent Director.
  • Talend’s New Board Member Comes with Technical Acumen and Leadership Skills - The open source big data integration software firm named Nora Denzel, 55, to its board of directors. Served as interim CEO of Outerwall and as SVP of Big Data.
  • Blucora Director Retires - Elizabeth J. Huebner, 59, who has served as a director of Blucora since 2009, is retiring from the Board. She is xCFO of Getty Images.
  • Quality Systems Replaces Retiring Board Member - Julie Klapstein, 62, founding CEO of Availity, joins as board member. Russell Pflueger, director since 2006, has retired. 
  • Redknee Solutions Director Resigns After Few Months on Board – The company accepted Keith Graham's Resignation as Director. Founder and President of Rondeau Capital Inc., a private investment and advisory company.
  • SeaChange International Sees Board Changes in Middle of Leadership Restructuring Initiated Due to Investor Roumell Asset Management’ Push to Sell - William Markey, 51, has been named Chairman at the multiscreen video software specialist SeaChange. Mark Bonney, 63, Former MRV Communications’ CEO, and Andy Sriubas, 48, Chief Commercial Officer of Outfront Media, have been appointed to the board. Steven Craddock, 68, has decided to retire as board member. 

Leadership Changes

Oracle's Systems Boss Bails amid Deafening Silence over Solaris Fate - John F. Fowler, 56, resigned as EVP, Systems at Oracle. Fowler had responsibility “for the delivery of all of Oracle's systems products, including SPARC and x86-based servers, Oracle Solaris, networking, and disk and tape storage products.”

Intuit Announces CFO Succession Plan - Michelle Clatterbuck, SVP of Finance for Intuit’s Consumer Tax Group and acting finance leader for Intuit’s Small Business Group will replace Neil Williams, 64, as CFO in February 2018. 

Symantec’s CAO Resigns - Mark Garfield resigned as SVP and Chief Accounting Officer of Symantec. Nicholas R. Noviello, the Company's EVP and CFO, assumed the responsibilities of Principal Accounting Officer.

Shopify CFO to Retire in 2018 - Shopify’s CFO Russ Jones will retire in 2018 and that he will continue to serve as CFO until a successor is found and has transitioned into the role. The company expects the transition process to be completed within the next 12 months.

Citrix Taps CRO from SAP - Mark J. Ferrer joined as EVP and chief revenue officer. Comes from SAP, where he has been the COO and EVP of SAP Global Customer Operations since 2011.

Uber Technologies’ Leadership Shake-Up - Ryan Graves, 34, the first employee at Uber and a longtime board member, stepped down from his executive role. Stays on board. Uber selected Expedia chief Dara Khosrowshahi as new CEO. Uber's Head of Developer Platform, Chris Saad Resigned.

Cadence Design Systems Announces New Finance Leaders - John Wall, corporate VP of finance and corporate controller of Cadence, has been appointed SVP and CFO of Cadence. Current CFO Geoff Ribar will stay as senior advisor until his previously announced retirement at the end of March 2018. Michelle Quejado appointed as corporate controller. Most recently interim CFO at Zynga.

Akamai Technologies Announced a Planned Succession in Leadership within Legal Organization - Aaron Ahola, Akamai's Deputy General Counsel will succeed Melanie Haratunian as SVP, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary. Haratunian is retiring after 14 years as Akamai's General Counsel.

SS&C Technologies Promotes Alternative Assets SVP to EVP - SS&C Technologies promoted Rahul Kanwar, SVP and MD of Alternative Assets, to EVP.

Nuance EVP, Corporate Strategy & Development Leaves - Nuance announced termination of employment of EVP, Corporate Strategy & Development A. Bruce Bowden, 48.

Pegasystems Appoints Chief Technical Systems Officer - Pegasystems appointed Frank Guerrera as Chief Technical Systems Officer. Most recently, VP of SaaS services at Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE).

Sophos Appoints CHRO - Sophos appointed Clarissa A. Peterson as SVP and CHRO. Joins Sophos from Abt Associates.

FireEye Appoints Marketing Chief - New CMO Vasu Jakkal, is former VP of corporate marketing of Brocade. 

Dell Technologies Segment Leader Leaves - David I. Goulden as President, Infrastructure Solutions Group, has resigned.

Avaya's COO Named as CEO - Jim Chirico, currently Avaya's COO and Global Sales Leader, named as CEO.

Ellie Mae Leadership Changes - Dinesh Shahane has joined the company as SVP of engineering. Prior to joining the company, Shahane was the chief technology officer of SAP Ariba. Melanie Simpson tendered her resignation from her position as EVP, Human Resources, of Ellie Mae.

2U Witnesses Leadership Overhaul - Educational technology company 2U’s COO Susan E.  Cates resigned to pursue other opportunities. The company named Rani Hammond, HR exec from Hilton Worldwide, as its first Chief People Officer. 2U also announced two key internal promotions -  Andrew Hermalyn, the former EVP of strategic partnerships, will take on a newly created role as EVP of university partnerships and programs. Matthew Norden, the former deputy general counsel, will now serve as co-general counsel. 

Customer Service Software Company Zendesk Announces Changes - CIO John T. Keiser appointed as COO. Bryan Cox resigned as Chief Revenue Officer of the company.

Online Payroll Software Company Paylocity Appoints New CFO and COO - Paylocity appointed Toby J. Williams as its CFO. Most recently as Chief Product and Strategy Officer at Ellucian. Michael Haske, Sales and Marketing SVP, has been promoted to President & COO. Ian J. Rogers, Corporate Controller, will serve as principal accounting officer.

Etsy Appointed Mike Fisher as CTO – New CTO Mike Fisher is Co-founder and x-managing partner of the consulting firm AKF Partners.

Coupa Software Gets New CMO - Coupa Software Hires CMO Chandar Pattabhiram from Marketo.

AppFolio CEO Retires - SVP, AppFolio Property Manager Jason Randall will succeed retiring President and CEO of AppFolio Brian Donahoo. 

Imperva’s New CEO is former CEO of Citrix GetGo - Imperva appointed 20-year technology veteran Christopher Hylen, 56, the former CEO of Citrix GetGo, as president and CEO and director. Anthony Bettencourt, who currently serves as president and CEO, will transition to the newly created role of VP of customer engagement.

CyberArk Taps CRO from Internal Ranks - CyberArk promoted Ron Zoran to the newly created position of Chief Revenue Officer (CRO). Most recently as VP of Sales for the Americas.

8x8 Appoints Product Chief - 8x8 promoted Dejan Deklich to EVP and chief product officer. As part of the transition, SVP of strategy, analytics and corporate development, Darren Hakeman, who formerly oversaw the product management and product operations teams, will now oversee corporate development. 

Alteryx Appoints Ashley Kramer as VP of Product Management - Prior to Alteryx, Kramer was Director of Product Management and Head of Cloud Strategy at Tableau Software.

Endurance International Taps New CEO from Convergys - Jeffrey H. Fox was appointed to the role of President and CEO, succeeding Hari Ravichandran, the company’s founder. Most recently at Convergys, where he was President and CEO.

Quality Systems’ General Counsel Steps Down - Quality Systems Announces Resignation of Jocelyn A. Leavitt as EVP, General Counsel and Secretary.

Everbridge Appoints New Leaders - appointed Robert Hughes as President. Most recently served as Strategic Advisor to the CEO. Jaime Ellertson, currently Chairman, CEO and President, resigned. Intralinks exec Javier Colado joins as SVP, International Sales.

Castlight Health announces Principal Accounting Officer - Castlight Health appointed Eric Chan, 41, the Company's Chief Accounting Officer, to serve as its Principal Accounting Officer.

Veritas’ Leadership Appointments - Veritas Technologies appoints David Noy as VP of Product Management. Joins from Dell EMC Isilon, where he was VP of product management and marketing. Veritas Technologies announced that Barbara Spicek has joined the company as VP of global channels and alliances. Comes from Gigamon where she served as VP of worldwide channel sales.

Joan Burke Joins DocuSign as Chief People Officer - Most recently, Burke served as SVP of Global HR at Marketo and Responsys.

Deltek Announces Promotions for Product Strategy and Engineering Functions - Warren Linscott, now SVP of Product Strategy, has been with Deltek for eight years. Pete Mann, now SVP of Corporate Development, Product Alliances & Cloud, has been with Deltek since 2010. Kevin Plexico, VP of Information Solutions, has been with Deltek since 2010. Mike Scopa, now SVP of Engineering, has been with Deltek for 25 years.

Hulu Names Leader for Viewer Experience Operations - Linda Cardenas joined Hulu as head of viewer experience operations. Cardenas most recently served as SVP of customer service and voice of the customer at financial services company SWBC.

Regional Appointments 

SAP Appoints EMEA and APAC Leaders - SAP appointed Brian Duffy Head of Global Strategic Initiatives, as EMEA North Regional President and Claus Andresen as President and Managing Director of SAP Southeast.  Former COO, SAP Indian Subcontinent. 

Citrix Gets New Leader for Indian Subcontinent - Microsoft exec Makarand Joshi joined as Area VP and Country Head for Indian subcontinent. 

Software AG Appoints Division VPs in North America - Software AG named Oracle exec Doug Palmer and company Regional VP Joe Yurich to division VPs in North America, responsible for driving US-wide adoption of the company’s market-leading Digital Business Platform. 

Uber Appoints Brooks Entwistle as Chief Business Officer, Asia Pacific Region – He is Former CEO of the Everstone Group for the past three years.

Avaya Names Geographic Leaders - Avaya Names Sami Ammous as Managing Director ASEAN. Previously led the Sales Engineering organization in Asia Pacific. Avaya also appointed two new area VPs for the U.S. Theater - Bruce Rosen joins from Newport Strategy Advisors and Jim Haigh comes from Microsoft. They will lead sales strategies for all segments of customers care, directly and through channel partners, account teams and operations in the Western and Southern areas, respectively. Fadi Hani is new VP for MEA & Turkey.

Coupa Software Gets New APAC Head – The cloud-based spend management software company appoints Concur exec Marten Jagers to Lead Asia-Pacific (APAC) Region.

New APAC Regional VP at LivePerson - Online messaging, marketing, and analytics products company named Amdocs exec Andrew Cannington as new regional VP, APAC. 

Brightcove Hires VP of Media for EMEA - The leading online video hosting platform company hired Allen Dickson as VP of media, EMEA. Most recently, VP of media entertainment for RealNetworks. Tomer Azenkot is now VP of Americas media sales. Azenkot joins the Americas team following standout success as VP of Asia. Ben Morrell has been named acting general manager for the Asia region and will oversee operations in the region.

M&A Activity Related Leadership Shuffles

Changes in Micro Focus’ Leadership after Merger with HPE Software Business - Hewlett Packard Enterprise completed the spin-off and subsequent merger of its software business with Micro Focus International plc. In connection, John Schultz, EVP, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of HPE, joined the board of directors of Micro Focus. 
Chris Hsu, formerly COO of HPE and EVP and GM of HPE Software, was appointed CEO of Micro Focus.
Micro Focus CEO Stephen Murdoch has stepped down from the Board and has become the Chief Operating Officer of Micro Focus with effect from Completion.

Intel Appoints Mobileye Prof. Amnon Shashua as CEO of the Vision based Advanced Driver Assistance Company & SVP Intel - Intel’s acquisition of Mobileye is expected to accelerate innovation for the automotive industry and positions Intel as a leading technology provider in the fast-growing market for highly and fully autonomous vehicles. Mobileye will remain headquartered in Israel and led by Prof. Amnon Shashua, 57, who will serve as Intel SVP and Mobileye CEO and CTO. In addition, Ziv Aviram, 58, Mobileye Co-Founder, President and CEO, is retiring from the company, effective immediately.

AVEVA merges with Schneider Electric industrial software business - Philip Aiken will continue as Non-Executive Chairman following completion. Jennifer Allerton, Christopher Humphrey and Ron Mobed will continue as independent Non-Executive directors of the Enlarged AVEVA Group. Emmanuel Babeau (Deputy CEO and CFO) and Peter Herweck (EVP - Industry) of Schneider Electric will be appointed as Non-Executive directors. The parties are in the process of selecting a new CEO. James Kidd will continue in his role as CEO until such time, and will be appointed to the role of Deputy CEO and CFO. 
Key members of the existing executive management team of AVEVA, namely Dave Wheeldon (CTO and currently also Deputy CEO) and Steen Lomholt-Thomsen (Chief Revenue Officer) are expected to remain in place following completion; Ravi Gopinath, currently EVP of the Schneider Electric Software Business, will be appointed as COO of the Enlarged AVEVA Group; and David Ward will continue in his current role as CFO of AVEVA, until a new CFO is appointed, following which Ward will be appointed as Company Secretary.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
