We’ve seen a lot of shakeups this past month, as 93 new heads of technology have stepped up, including new CTOs, CIOs, tech & ops execs and CISOs. Quite a few new tech executive roles have opened up, as well.

Following is an overview of this month’s trends....  

By the numbers, overall:

     Total Tech Exec Roles Open: 47
     New Tech Exec Appointments: 93 (in 84 companies, as 7 companies have multiple appointments) - 14 women or 15%, 79 men

Sources of Appointments: 72 were External appointments, and 21 were internal promotions.

Twitter, California, December 2016 - Twitter's CTO Adam Messinger left.  *no replacement announced.
BOK Financial Corporation, Oklahoma, July 2017 - BOK Financial Corporation announced that Donald T. Parker, 56, EVP and current CIO, has left. CTO Joseph A. Grotton II, 54, has been named Interim CIO.
Saia, Georgia, June 2017 - Mark H. Robinson, VP and CIO, decided to retire from the company.
Saia, Georgia, July 2017 - Brian Balius, 56, VP Transportation and Engineering, informed Saia, the trucking company, of his plans to retire after 28 years of service with Saia.
Vectrus, Colorado, June 2017 - Rene J. Moline, the Vectrus's SVP, IT and Network Communication Services, resigned.
The Buckle, Nebraska, November 2015 - The Buckle is seeking a CIO to direct, plan, and manage the company's Information Systems.

United States Department of Defense, Washington, D.C., January 2017 - Terry Halvorsen, who as the Pentagon’s CIO, retired. Current principal deputy CIO, John Zangardi, is expected to step in as acting CIO.
United States Department of Homeland Security, Washington, D.C., August 2017 – CIO Richard Staropoli has resigned after only three months on the job. Deputy CIO Stephen Rice will serve as acting CIO until President Trump appoints a new person to fill the role.
NASA, Washington D.C., May 2017 - Michael Witt, who joined NASA in February, will become acting senior agency information security officer, replacing Jeanette Hanna-Ruiz. 
University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma, June 2017 - Oklahoma Eddie Huebsch has been named interim CIO at the University of Oklahoma. Huebsch has served OU IT for more than 16 years in a variety of leadership roles, most recently as associate VP of technology advancement.
Dallas Independent School District, Texas, June 2017 - CTO Bob Moore left in June. The role is vacant.

TE Connectivity, Switzerland - $14.26B, October 2015  - EVP and CTO, Robert Shaddock, retired from the Company effective late 2016.
Criteo SA, France - $1.62B, November 2016 - Romain Niccoli resigned as Chief Product Officer effective December 31, 2016. He will serve the company in a consulting role for a period of time following his resignation.

Tata Motors, India, September 2017 - CTO Tim Leverton has resigned and will continue in the position until 31 October, and his successor will be announced in due course.

JPMorgan Chase, New York - Lori Beer named as global CIO; formerly CIO of corporate and investment bank unit; will succeed Dana Deasy, who plans to retire.

United Technologies, Connecticut - IBM exec Steve Abrams has joined chief data scientist for the industrial conglomerate to expand its Internet of Things efforts.

Honeywell International, New Jersey - Honeywell Transportation Systems hired Cristina Segal as VP and GM of the Connected Vehicle team. Co-founder of COMSYS.

Publix Super Markets, Florida - Erik Katenkamp has been named VP of omnichannel and application development at Publix Super Markets. Current VP of information systems — application development.

MassMutual, Massachusetts - MassMutual named Nabil Hachem, Novartis Institute exec, as Head of Data Engineering.

Freddie Mac, Virginia - Stacey Goodman will join Freddie Mac as EVP and CIO. Most recently, Goodman was EVP, chief information and operations officer at CIT.

Sun Life Financial, Ontario, Canada - Stevan Lewis named as SVP of digital transformation. Currently SVP and CTO.

Sun Life Assurance Company Of Canada, Ontario, Canada - Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada appointed Stevan Lewis as SVP of Digital Transformation.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Ohio - Christopher Helsel has been named VP and CTO. Currently director, North America commercial and global off-highway technology in Goodyear.

Aramark, Pennsylvania - Mike Giresi has joined food services provider Aramark as SVP & CIO. Former CIO, Royal Caribbean Cruises.

Air Canada, Quebec, Canada - Air Canada appointed Catherine Dyer as CIO. Comes from Enbridge where she most recently held the role of CIO and prior to that, VP, IT.

MGM Resorts International, Nevada - Kelly Smith joins as SVP and Chief Digital Officer for MGM Resorts International. Former VP of Global Digital Products of Starbucks.

Altice USA, New York - Philippe Le May has been named CTO. Former CTO of Altice France.

Harman International Industries, Connecticut - Industry veteran John Absmeier has been appointed SVP of the new HARMAN SBU, operating under HARMAN's Connected Car division, and collabortaing with Samsung Strategy and Innovation Center (SSIC) Smart Machines team. Will retain current role as VP of Smart Machines for SSIC.

Discovery Communications, Maryland - Francis Keeling, a leading digital music executive, is joining company as SVP, International Digital.

Jay Trinidad, currently running Discovery Northern Asia, takes on the additional role of MD, digital ventures.

TeleTech, Colorado - TeleTech welcomed Anthony (Tony) Tsai as the Company's new Chief Information and Innovation Officer. Tsai was the Chief Innovation Officer at UST Global, a digital technology company.

Selective Insurance Company Of America, New Jersey - Kevin Forrey, Assistant VP, Application Development Services, has been promoted to VP, IT Application Development.

P3 Communications, Washington, D.C. - P3 appointed Rikard Lundqvist as VP of technology and partner. Former President and CEO of Ascom Network Testing by InfoVista.

DAXKO, Alabama - Daxko, appointed Bjrn Bjerke as CTO. 

Guardian Analytics, California - Jesus Ortiz named as VP of Product Development. Former VP of Release Management for the Fusion Middleware PaaS and Enterprise solutions at Oracle.

DigiCert, Utah - DigiCert hired Mike Ahmadi as Global Director of IoT Security. Member of the technical steering committee for the ISA Security Compliance Institute (ISCI), and also Chairman of the Cybersecurity Assurance Testing Task Force under the Society for Automotive Engineering (SAE). 

DocuTech, Idaho - Docutech hired Brian Sargent as VP of product management. Previously held management-level positions at Limelight Networks, GoDaddy and Symantec.

Gladson Interactive, Illinois - Rahul Miglani was named CTO for the company. He joins the company from West Monroe Partners. 

Chris Barnes was named the company's SVP, Strategy & Solutions. He joins from Market Track, where he was SVP of eCommerce Solutions.

Cie Digital Labs, California - Tegdeep Kondal named as new VP of Product Development. Former Director of Product Management at OpenX and Senior Product Manager at Amazon.

United States Intelligence Community (IC), Washington, D.C. - John B. Sherman named as CIO of the Intelligence Community, Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Currently serves as the Deputy Director of CIA’s Open Source Enterprise.

Atlantic General Hospital, Maryland - Atlantic General Hospital and Health System announced that Jonathan Bauer, Project Mager at McKesson, has joined as the new VP of information systems.

Coastal Contacts, British Columbia, Canada - Clearly welcomed Alex Buhler as CTO. Most recently, Alex was the CIO at Mountain Equipment Co-op.

Liquidnet Holdings, New York - Liquidnet has appointed Patrick Strobel as Head of Technology for EMEA. Former Head of P&L and IPV Technology and former Global Head of Equity Trading Analytics of Deutsche Bank.

The Seibels Bruce Group, South Carolina - The Seibels Bruce Group appointed Manny Robinson to VP, IT operations. Previously Director of Partner Sales, Partner Services and BD Manager for TSYS/NetSpend/Skylight.

TmaxSoft, Illinois - Legacy modernization software firm TmaxSoft named John Yun as its Global CTO. Joins from LG Electronics, where he previously served as VP of B2B Business Development.

National Geographic Partners, District Of Columbia - New hires include AOL exec David Miller as SVP and GM,, and Netflix exec Kyle Christensen as VP of Channel Social and Digital Strategy.

nThrive, Georgia - Patient-to-payment healthcare solutions firm nThrive appointed Bernard Gay as CIO leading company's Technology Services organization. Joins from Delaware North Corporation.

Avaloq group, Switzerland - Avaloq has appointed Stefan Benz as Head of Digital and Front. Previously held exec positions at Lotus/IBM, Zurich Financial Services and Credit Suisse.

Bang & Olufsen, Denmark - Christian Birk, 31, named to a newly formed position as Chief Digital Officer and SVP. Joins from DigitasLBi.

Netia S.A., Poland - Netia appointed Konrad Kobylecki as CIO. Former Telekomunikacja Polska exec.

Guestline, United Kingdom - Guestline appointed Andrew Metcalfe to the new role of CTO. Previously, Metcalfe headed up London based engineering at OpenTable.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. She also has been a featured speaker on leadership at numerous conferences and at Columbia University's MBA program.

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
