Welcome to the Vell Leadership Update 46th monthly edition, for the 30 days ending July 14, 2017.

We’ve seen a lot of shakeups this past month, as 130 new heads of technology have stepped up, including new CTOs, CIOs, tech & ops execs and CISOs. Quite a few new tech executive roles have opened up, as well.


We have included a broader number of titles (like in the past month) - and data,  analytics, and Chief Digital Officers roles that are tech related only (not roles that are focused on other functional roles, e.g. marketing). 

Following is an overview of this month’s trends....

Sources of Appointments: 84 were External appointments, and 46 were internal promotions.

Brian Balius, 56, VP Transportation and Engineering, informed Saia, of his plans to retire after 28 years of service with Saia.

Cartesian, Kansas - $80.6M, June 2016 - Cartesian announced the termination of employment to Jim Baker, the Company's CTO and CIO and a named executive officer. 
Diadexus, California - $18.10M, March 2016 - Dr. Emilia Zychlinksy, EVP and Chief Technical Officer, resigned. 
Sam's West, Arkansas, January 2017 - Wal-Mart Stores CIO Karenann Terrell is leaving the company. 
U.S. Energy Department, Washington, D.C., January 2017 - Michael Johnson, Energy Department CIO, has left. Robbie Green, principal deputy CIO for enterprise information resources management, has been named interim CIO. 
United States Department of Defense, Washington, D.C., January 2017 - Terry Halvorsen, who as the Pentagon’s CIO, retired. Current principal deputy CIO, John Zangardi, is expected to step in as acting CIO. 
NASA, Washington D.C., May 2017 - Michael Witt, who joined NASA in February, will become acting senior agency information security officer, replacing Jeanette Hanna-Ruiz.
comScore, Virginia, June 2017 - Cross-platform measurement company comScore announced a reorganization of its technology and product teams into a unified group reporting to the Company’s Chief Operating Officer Cameron Meierhoefer. In connection with the reorganization, the Company’s CTO, Michael Brown, 45, will step down. 
University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma, June 2017 - Oklahoma Eddie Huebsch has been named interim CIO at the University of Oklahoma. Huebsch has served OU IT for more than 16 years in a variety of leadership roles, most recently as associate VP of technology advancement. 
Space Systems Loral, California, June 2017 - EVP, Engineering and Operations Paul Estey has been promoted EVP and COO. *Replacement has not been announced, or if the role is vacant.

TE Connectivity, Switzerland - $14.26B, October 2015  - EVP and CTO, Robert Shaddock, retired from the Company effective late 2016. 
Criteo SA, France - $1.62B, November 2016 - Romain Niccoli resigned as Chief Product Officer effective December 31, 2016. He will serve the company in a consulting role for a period of time following his resignation. 
Schaltbau Holding AG, Germany - $544.5M, June 2017 - The Schaltbau Group, the industrial engineering company, announced that Mr. Ralf Kladtke, 53, responsible for the segment 'Mobile Traffic Technology' as a Member of the Executive Board of Schaltbau Holding AG, is to resign from his office on his own request in order to focus on new challenges. 
Clipper Logistics, United Kingdom - $424.9M, March 2017 - Sean Fahey, CIO, has notified the Board of his intention to retire after 25 years' of service. 
ÅF AB, Sweden, July 2017 - Swedish engineering and consulting company ÅF AB (publ) announced that CIO Lena Tollerz Törn, 45, will leave the company in September 2017 to assume the position of CIO for Länsförsäkringar. Lena Tollerz Törn has been with the company since 2015. 
AXA Konzern AG, Germany, June 2017 - Dr. Andrea van Aubel, board member for IT and digitalization at AXA Konzern AG, will leave the company. Dr. Thilo Schumacher will lead the IT department in a temporary manner, in addition to his responsibilities as managing director of AXA Konzern AG, responsible for health insurance.

Sheng Siong Group, Singapore - $577.4M, October 2016 - Sheng Siong Group Ltd. appointed Woo Chee Kit as Acting CIO. 
Trade Me Group Limited, New Zealand - $158.3M, July 2017 - Trade Me Group Limited (TME) has reorganized its management, including some changes to its Executive team.
The current General Manager of Platform and Operations, David Wasley, will act as Chief Product and Technology Officer until a permanent appointment is made, and will move on from the business later in the year after more than 10 years at Trade Me. 
Just Dial, India - $104.2M, October 2016 - R. V. Raman, CTO of the company has resigned. 
Kresta Holdings, Australia - $69.9M, April 2016 - Albert Xu has resigned as CIO, a role he has filled since June 2014.



Tech Function Execs Appointed in 30 days ended July 14, 2017

Microsoft, Washington - $87.2B - Microsoft CIO Jim DuBois is leaving the company. It's unclear if his departure is related to an ongoing company reorganization, which includes thousands of layoffs. Kurt DelBene, 57, Microsoft's head of corporate strategy, will take on DuBois' responsibilities. DelBene won't be taking the title of CIO, but will still oversee Microsoft's IT department with a new title of Chief Digital Officer, helping oversee Microsoft's efforts to modernize its internal IT practices.
American Airlines Group, Texas - $40.4B - American Airlines announced that Poonam Mohan has been promoted to VP – IT. Most recently Mohan has served as Managing Director – Flight Operations & Crew Technology.
United Continental Holdings, Illinois - $36.8B - To ensure United continues to innovate and execute across all technology and digital fronts, United has named Linda Jojo EVP, technology and chief digital officer. Jojo was previously EVP and CIO.
Charter Communications, Connecticut - $36.6B - Charter Communications announced that Andrew Ip has joined the Company as SVP, Emerging Technology & Innovation. Most recently, SVP and Managing Director at Madison Square Garden Ventures.
Mars, Virginia - $35.0B - Sandeep Dadlani, who resigned as president of Infosys, has joined Mars as its chief digital officer.
NBCUniversal Media, New York - $32.6B - Laura Lee will join NBCUniversal Media as EVP of content, strategy and operations for digital enterprises. She most recently was the president and chief digital officer of Margaritaville Media.
3M Company, Minnesota - $30.3B - Eric Hammes, currently VP, corporate controller and chief accounting officer, is appointed SVP, Business Transformation & IT, replacing Julie Bushman.
Dr. John Banovetz, currently managing director, DACH region (combined Germany, Austria, Switzerland), is appointed SVP, Research & Development and CTO, replacing Dr. Ashish Khandpur.
Dollar General Corporation, Tennessee - $22.3B - Carman Wenkoff, CIO and chief digital officer for Subway restaurants, will join the company as EVP and CIO. Wenkoff replaces current CIO Ryan Boone, who recently announced his retirement.
Southwest Airlines, Texas - $20.5B - Southwest Airlines Co. announced several leadership changes. SVP and CIO Randy Sloan is leaving the company in mid-July. Kathleen Wayton, who is currently the airline's VP of Corporate Delivery Operations & Reservations, has been promoted to SVP and CIO upon Sloan's departure.
Additionally, Southwest has hired Stan Alexander into a new role of VP & Chief Technology Architect. Most recently, Stan served as the principal consultant of Digital Pilot, where he provided technology strategy, architecture and leadership consulting services to FedEx, and very recently to Southwest.
Micron Technology, Idaho - $17.4B - Brian M. Shirley's position with the company changed from VP, Memory Solutions to SVP, DRAM & Emerging Memory Engineering.
The company also appointed Jeff VerHeul as SVP, Non-Volatile Engineering. VerHeul most recently was SVP, Corporate Engineering at SanDisk.
CenturyLink, Louisiana - $17.3B - Aamir Hussain, EVP - product development, platforms and infrastructure, will be responsible for IT, testing and integration, architecture, infrastructure, security, as well as overall business enablement. Former EVP, Chief Technology and Information Officer.
Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, ON, Canada - $10.9B - Deepak Khandelwal will join CIBC in August as Group Head, Client Connectivity and Innovation. Khandelwal brings a deep understanding and experience in building client-first cultures at companies including Rogers, Google and McKinsey.
CNA Financial Corporation, Illinois - $9.5B - CNA appointed Gregg Fergot as VP, Underwriting, leading the Company's Technology Segment. Most recently, he served as VP, Head of Technology, Middle Market Commercial, for Zurich.
Chevron Phillips Chemical, Texas - $8.9B - Dave Smith, currently SVP, Petrochemicals, will assume a new role as SVP, Corporate Planning & Technology. Smith has more than 37 years of industry experience, beginning with Chevron and has held positions of increasing responsibility in engineering, business development and management.
Tesla, California - $8.5B - Tesla announced that the head of its Autopilot software, Chris Lattner, has left the company less than six months after joining it. The company elevated Jim Keller, VP of Autopilot hardware, to also oversee Autopilot software.
Huntington Ingalls Industries, Virginia - $7.0B - Huntington Ingalls Industries announced that Ron A. Davis has joined the company as chief information systems officer. Davis joins HII after serving as chief information security officer for Vencore since 2015.
Uber Technologies, India - $6.5B - Uber announced that it has appointed Jaiteerth Patwari as senior engineering leader at its Hyderabad engineering centre. With 22 years of experience in product development, product innovation and management, Jaiteerth will focus on developing scalable distributed real-time business platforms.
CMS Energy Corporation, Michigan - $6.4B - CMS Energy and Consumers Energy announced Jean-Francois (JF) Brossoit, currently SVP of transformation and shared services, will succeed Dan Malone, SVP of engineering, and assume his responsibilities when Malone retires Nov. 1, 2017.
Ernst & Young, New York - $6.0B - Ernst & Young has appointed Rajan Sachdeva as digital leader for India and head of its Technology Advisory Services Practice. In the newly created role, Rajan joins the company from technology major Accenture where he was markets leader for technology in Asia Pacific.
Under Armour, Maryland - $4.8B - CIO Paul Fipps has been named CTO with responsibility for overseeing all aspects of engineering that support Under Armour's web and mobile applications, as well as its IT and real estate functions.
LPL Financial Holdings, Massachusetts - $4.1B - LPL Financial announced it is bringing on a new CIO. Scott Seese, who was previously CIO of American Express's global consumer business unit, will join the company, succeeding Victor Fetter.
Sabre Corporation, Texas - $3.4B - Sabre Corp. has named Joe DiFonzo as CIO. DiFonzo brings to Sabre a nearly 30-year career in technology leadership, including most recently, eight years at Syniverse, a global provider of communication and information services for network operators, where during his tenure he served as both CTO and CIO.
Infor, New York - $2.8B - Infor has hired cloud expert Mayumi Hiramatsu in a newly created role, SVP of Cloud Operations. Prior to joining Infor, Hiramatsu was VP of Product Operations at Cisco Systems.
Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., New York - $2.6B - BBH announced that Managing Director, Michael McGovern, was appointed Head of the Firm's Investor Services Fintech offerings, which include middle office services, Infomediary, and software-as-a-service technology solutions for asset managers and financial institutions.
Succeeding McGovern, Managing Directors Brian Condon and Lorrie Gordon have been appointed Co-heads of Technology for the Firm. Condon joined BBH from J.P. Morgan in 2016.
Gordon joined BBH in 1994. She has held various leadership positions in Europe and the U.S., including Chief Development Officer and Global Head of Infomediary.
Rackspace Hosting, Texas - $2.1B - Rackspace announced that it has completed the acquisition of TriCore Solutions. Mark Clayman, TriCore's CEO, will lead Rackspace's newly formed Enterprise Applications division that will deliver managed services for ERP, business intelligence and analytics, and data warehousing applications.
Marsh LLC, New York - $1.9B - Marsh LLC has appointed Sastry Durvasula as its chief digital officer and chief data and analytics officer. Durvasula joins Marsh from American Express, which he was most recently he was enterprise head of data and digital technology.
Korn/Ferry International, California - $1.6B - Korn Ferry has announced that Matt Dixon has joined the firm as Global Head of Salesforce Effectiveness. He joins Korn Ferry Hay Group from CEB (now Gartner) where he most recently served as group leader of the financial services, customer contact and customer experience practices.
Prith Banerjee has joined the firm as Senior Client Partner IOT and Innovation Transformation for the Global Industrial Practice. Banerjee joins Korn Ferry from Schneider Electric, where he was EVP and CTO and a member of the Executive Committee.
Nexstar Media Group, Texas - $1.4B - Nexstar Media Group has appointed Wendy Bello as the VP and general manager of WROC-TV (CBS) and associated digital services, including, serving Rochester, NY. Before joining Nexstar, she served at Clear Channel Radio in Rochester.
NeuStar, Virginia - $1.2B - Neustar appointed Krishna Chettayar as General Manager and VP of Product, OneID®. Most recently, he was instrumental in shaping the consumer data and insights services at TransUnion to drive media effectiveness and consumer product adoption.
Amaya, QC, Canada - $1.2B - Amaya reported the appointment of Jerry Bowskill as CTO of Amaya. Immediately prior to joining Amaya, Dr. Bowskill was a technology consultant for Partis Solutions, a company focused on the provision of corporate services to the interactive gaming industry from January 2017 to June 2017.
Endurance International Group Holdings, Massachusetts - $1.2B - Endurance International Group appointed Michael W. Lillie as the company's new CIO. He most recently was VP of IT for Nuance Communications.
Olympic Steel, Ohio - $1.1B - Olympic Steel announced Esther Potash, CIO, has retired. In conjunction with Potash’s retirement, Chris Garrett, has been promoted to VP, IT – Flat Rolled. Garrett joined Olympic Steel in 1995 and most recently named Director of Information Services in 2013.
Employers Holdings, Nevada - $784.1M - Employers has named Jeffrey Shaw as VP, application development, data and integration. Most recently Shaw served as the vice president of technology for NIC Inc.
Investors Bancorp, New Jersey - $672.2M - Investors Bank has appointed Michael Fegan as its Chief Information and Operations Officer. Prior to joining Investors Bank, Mr. Fegan was Chief Operations and Technology Officer and EVP at Bank Leumi from 2013 to 2017.
TESSCO Technologies, Maryland - $533.3M - TESSCO Technologies announced the hiring of Joe Cawley as VP/CIO. Prior to joining TESSCO Cawley was most recently VP/CIO of IT for Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Virginia.
Sonic Corp., Oklahoma - $515.8M - Kim Lewis is new VP of digital strategies. Lewis most recently served as consultant to a variety of brands on digital strategy and was previously head of marketing and e-commerce for Golfsmith International.
Sunrun, California - $459.3M - Sunrun announced it has expanded its management team with the hire of Audrey Lee, PhD as VP of Grid Services. Lee recently served as VP of Analytics and Design with Advanced Microgrid Solutions, where she was the first company hire in 2014.
Cowen, New York - $399.6M - Cowen announced that Ann Neidenbach, who joined the firm upon the closing of the company's recent acquisition of Convergex, has been appointed Managing Director and CIO.
Alexander & Baldwin, Hawaii - $389.3M - Alexander & Baldwin named John Perkins as VP of IT. Perkins is an experienced executive who ran large IT departments as VP of engineering for Magnetic and as SVP for International Fund Services.
NBT Bank, National Association, New York - $357.6M - VP Terra Carnrike-Granata has been promoted to Director of Information Security. She joined NBT in 2008 as Information Security Officer and was promoted to Information Security and Fraud Risk Manager in 2015.
CSS Industries, Pennsylvania - $322.4M - Jeffrey DeSandre will join the organization as its new VP and CIO. DeSandre has twenty years of experience in the IT field, including his most recent experience as CIO of First Quality Enterprises.
Imperva, California - $277.0M - Imperva announced that its chief product strategist, Terry Ray, was named CTO.
Carnegie Corp. of New York, New York - $257.4M - Carnegie Corporation of New York appointed Julia Weede as chief communications and digital strategies officer, responsible for overseeing the foundation's internal and external communications. Most recently she was an EVP in charge of the education division of Edelman, a global communications and marketing firm.
HealthStream, Tennessee - $231.8M - Jeff Cunningham joins company as SVP & CTO. Founder, former CTO and Chief Strategy Officer for Informatics Corporation of America (ICA).
CTO Jeff Doster promoted to SVP & CIO., California - $221.3M - has hired Christine Fernandez as its Chief Experience Officer. Most recently, she was Uber's Head of Design for the Rider, Global Partnerships, Developer Platform and Uber for Business teams, driving Uber's core consumer experience.
SonicWall, California - $208.8M - Data breach detection and prevention solution provider SonicWall hired Sandra Crosswell as its first chief security officer (CSO). Prior to SonicWall, Crosswell was a senior manager at VMware, leading the InfoSec red team.
Cylance, California - $191.5M - Rahul Kashyap has been appointed Chief Product Officer. Previously, he was EVP of products at Bromium and led worldwide threat research at McAfee Labs.
Wolters Kluwer Health, Pennsylvania - $190.0M - Wolters Kluwer Health announced that Jean-Claude Saghbini has joined its executive management team as VP and CTO. He was the CTO of WaveMark, a successful Boston area startup that was acquired in 2013 by Cardinal Health.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents.
