Women Appointed to Large Boards - Technology, Finance, & Insurance June 4th to July 13th Featured

HP announced that Ann Livermore, 51, has been elected to its Board. She has been with HP for over 25 years and has been instrumental in helping countless HP customers grow and transform their businesses. While she will step down from her day-to-day management of the HP Enterprise Business, Livermore will continue to contribute valuable guidance to the organization as a member of the Board.

Unisys, an IT consulting company, announced that Alison Davis, 48, has been elected to its Board of Directors and its Finance Committee. Most recently, Davis was a Managing Partner of Belvedere Capital Partners, a private equity firm. Prior to joining Belvedere, she was the CFO at Barclays Global Investors and a Senior Partner at A.T. Kearney. She began her career at McKinsey & Company.

Financial Services

Goldman Sachs Group has selected Debora Spar, 47, to be an independent director of the firm. Dr. Spar is currently President of Barnard College. Prior to joining Barnard in 2008, Spar was a faculty member at Harvard Business School. She joined Harvard in 1991, holding a number of positions including Senior Associate Dean for Recruiting and Chair of the Business, Government, and International Economy Unit.

Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), one of Spain's top banks, announced that Shelaghmichael Brown has joined the BBVA Compass Board of Directors. Named to U.S. Banker's list of the '25 Most Powerful Women in Banking' each of the past two years, Brown has spearheaded BBVA Compass' Retail Banking Division, overseeing a distribution system that includes more than 700 branches. Brown joined BBVA Compass in 2007 after serving as President and CEO of Telecheck International and as EVP at JPMorgan Chase Bank. She also sits on the Board of the Consumer Bankers Association (CBA).

Och-Ziff Capital Management Group, an asset management company, announced that its Board of Directors has appointed Georganne Proctor, 54, as an independent director of the company. Proctor is the former CFO of TIAA-CREF, a position she held from 2006 to 2010. From 2003 to 2005, she was the EVP of Finance at Golden West Financial. Proctor has also served as a CFO and Director of Bechtel Group, as a Director of Redwood Trust, and as a member of the Board of Kaiser Aluminum Corporation.

Kaiser Federal Financial Group, the holding company for Kaiser Federal Bank, announced that Kay Hoveland, 63, is retiring from the company. Most recently, she served as CEO & Director of the Bank and as President, CEO, & Director of the holding company.

Lynda Nahra, 60, the Director, President, & CEO of Community West Bancshares Company has notified the company of her plans to resign. Chairman & Director William Peeples will assume these roles on an interim basis. Peeples founded the company in 1989 and has since served as CFO for other companies such as Inamed, Nusil, and Imulok.

Jean Lindsey, 69, announced that she is retiring from the Board of Directors at Grayson Bankshares. In September, Lindsey will turn 70 and reach the company’s mandatory retirement age for directors.

Wells Fargo elected Elaine Chao, 58, to its Board. Chao has previously served as a secretary for the U. S. Labor Department under President George W. Bush. After leaving the Labor Department, Chao returned to the Heritage Foundation, an educational organization based in Washington, D.C. Additionally, she was the CEO of the United Way of America and a director of the Peace Corps.

Electronic payment services provider Euronet Worldwide announced that Lu Cordova, 56, has agreed to serve on its Board of Directors. Cordova is the CEO of Corlund Industries, an investment holding company which specializes in operations management, strategic planning, business development, and capital finance. Cordova has worked to develop several companies in the past, including Acteva (TixToGo), @Home Network, MMS International, CEMA, and Accent Design. She is also the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of the 10th District Federal Reserve Bank.


The Progressive Corporation has elected Heidi Miller, 58, to its Board. Miller is the President of J.P. Morgan International and jointly leads J.P. Morgan’s Global Corporate Bank. She is also a member of J.P. Morgan's Operating Committee. From 2004 to 2010, Miller was the CEO of J.P. Morgan Treasury & Securities Services. Additionally, she currently serves on the Board of Directors of General Mills.

Assurant announced the appointment of Elyse Douglas, 55, to its Board. Currently, Douglas is the EVP, CFO, and a member of the board at Hertz Global Holdings and The Hertz Corporation. Prior to joining Hertz, Douglas held financial positions at Coty, Nabisco, and Chase Manhattan Bank.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. She also has been a featured speaker on leadership at numerous conferences and at Columbia University's MBA program.

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
