Welcome to our Tech Function Exec Appointment Trends & Open Roles for the - 30 days ended December 15th 2016. The roles covered here:   heads of technology, which include CTOs, CIOs, Tech & Ops, CISOs, Cyber and related.

By the numbers, overall:

  •      Total Tech Exec Roles Open: 70
  •      New Tech Exec Appointments: 84 (4 women or 5%, 80 men)

The geographic breakdown of open roles and new appointments was as follows:

New Tech Function Openings: 4 – Microphase (CT), Deloitte (IL), West Virginia University (VA), and United Medical Center (Washington, D.C.).

Sources of Appointments: 62 were External appointments, and 22 were internal promotions – Divisional execs (4), Interim CIO/CTO (3), Others (15).

After just over a year in the position, Biogen CIO Matt Griffiths is no longer with the company. Biogen plans to fill the CIO position. In the meantime, Mr. Griffiths’ organization reports to Adriana Andi Karaboutis, Biogen’s EVP of technology, business solutions and corporate affairs.

Hudson's Bay Company, New York - $9.59B, July 2015
Hudson's Bay Company is currently seeking a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) who will be responsible for establishing and maintaining an enterprise-wide information security strategy, architecture and program designed to ensure that HBC information assets are appropriately protected.

Turkcell Iletisim Hizmetleri AS announced that lker Kuruoz, who joined Company in 2006, and who has served as the EVP of Technology Group, has decided to resign from his position. *no replacement announced.

Tesla Motors, California - $3.5B, March 2016
Jay Vijayan has left his job as the CIO at Tesla Motors to begin working on a stealth startup. Tesla Motors confirmed Mr. Vijayan’s departure, but it would not say whether it has yet found a permanent replacement.

Parsons Corporation, California, $3.2B, September 2016
Parsons is looking for a CIO to lead the IT department.

Unisys, Pennsylvania - $3.01B, July 2016
Unisys is seeking a CISO. The CISO is responsible for setting and maintaining the internal IT security direction for Unisys.

Teradata Labs, California - $2.53B, July 2016
Teradata Labs is looking for a CTO to join the Unified Data Architecture (UDA) Platform Technologies team.

Marvell Technology, Bermuda, $2.458B, September 2016
Dr. Zining Wu, CTO, notified Marvell Technology of his decision to leave Marvell. *The company did not announce whether it has yet found a permanent replacement.

Magyar Telekom Telecommunications, Hungary - $2.22B, September 2016
Magyar Telekom announced that Chief Technology and IT Officer, Walter Goldenits shall leave his position with effect from December 31, 2016 to become CTO at Telekom Germany with effect from January 1, 2017.

Criteo SA, France - $1.62B, November 2016
Romain Niccoli resigned from his position as the company's Chief Product Officer effective December 31, 2016. Mr. Niccoli has agreed to serve the company in a consulting role for a period of time following his resignation.

Amedisys, Louisiana - $1.35B, October 2016
Amedisys announced that Martin B.  Howard, CIO, is leaving the company, effective October 31, 2016. Michael North, SVP of operations, will assume the role of interim CIO. North, a seasoned IT executive, most recently led Amedisys' successful conversion to the Homecare Homebase platform.

Informatica, California, $1.05B, September 2016
Informatica is looking for a CISO to lead the corporate security and data privacy.

US Government Publishing Office, Washington, DC - $773.4M, November 2016
U.S.  Government Publishing Office (GPO) named Tracee Boxley Acting CIO. Boxley replaces former GPO CIO Chuck Riddle, who has moved to the U.S.  Securities and Exchange Commission. Boxley came to GPO in 2006 as a Senior Customer Advocate for IT and was promoted to Deputy CIO in 2012. 

MicroStrategy, Virginia - $579.8M, June 2015    
MicroStrategy seeks a CISO, who will establish and develop global information security management programs for our internal systems and customer offerings.

Sheng Siong Group, Singapore - $577.4M, October 2016
Sheng Siong Group announced the cessation of Gary Pow Han Chin as CIO due to personal reasons. He is responsible for overseeing group's design, development, implementation and maintenance of the various computer systems required for operations, including Management Information System, as well as enterprise Resource Planning System, data recovery plans and back-up schemes.

Global Eagle Entertainment, California - $486.2M, November 2016
Global Eagle Entertainment and Aditya Chatterjee, the company’s CTO, have entered into a Separation and Release Agreement.

Shutterstock announced that Anshu Aggarwal, CTO of the company, notified the company of his decision to resign from his position, to spend more time with his family. The company has commenced an external search for a CTO to succeed Aggarwal.

Splunk is looking for a CISO to lead the IT security.

UnionBank of the Philippines, Philippines, $433.2M, September 2016
Union Bank of the Philippines announced that at the Mr. Ceferino P. Tolentino, Jr., CIO with the rank of SVP, has retired from the bank. *No Replacement announced.

ShoreTel,  California - $360.9M, May 2016
Pankaj Malhotra, the CTO of ShoreTel announced that he would be leaving the Company, effective June 30, 2016, on mutually agreeable terms. The company hasn’t announced any replacement yet.

Momo, China - $346.4M, October 2016
Momo announced that Zhiwei Li, CTO of the company, has resigned from the company for personal reasons.

Ruckus Wireless, California - $326.9M, June 2015        
William Bill Kish is leaving his position as CTO of Ruckus Wireless, to pursue new interests, and has stepped down as a member of the Board of Directors. The company has launched a search for a new CTO who will fuel the next wave of innovation.

StarTek, Colorado - $252.7M, October 2015       
Kamalesh Dwivedi, the company's CIO, separated from the company effective October 14, 2015.

inContact, Utah - $222.0M, April 2016
On April 15, 2016, inContact reached an agreement with Julian Critchfield, EVP and CTO, for his separation from service with the Company.

Carbonite, Massachusetts - $188.6M, November 2016
David Raissipour tendered his resignation as SVP, Product and Engineering of Carbonite.

LogMeIn, Massachusetts - $166.3M, November 2014     
LogMeIn is seeking a CISO to serve as a subject matter expert and leader reporting into the CTO.  The CISO will lead a global team of four and be responsible for the security of LogMeIn’s suite of award winning software products (including secure development), product delivery (NOC), security features of our products (security design), internal infrastructure (development environment), and 3rd party services (CRM’s, etc).

Mastech Holdings, Pennsylvania - $123.50M, March 2016
On March 11, 2016, Denis D. Deet ceased to be VP of Technology and CIO of Mastech Holdings.

SPAR Group announced that its CIO, Panos Mastrogiannis will be leaving the company to pursue other opportunities, effective May 6, 2016.

Spark Networks, California - $55M, October 2015        
Spark Networks announced that resignation of Gregory J. Franchina as a CIO, delivered a notice of resignation to the Company indicating that he intended to resign from the Company effective as of November 14, 2015. The Company intends to replace Mr. Franchina and has initiated the process of recruiting qualified candidates.

BSM Technologies, Canada - $39.7M, November 2016
BSM Technologies  announced that Alban Hoxha, CTO of the company, will be leaving the organization to pursue other opportunities, effective January 20, 2017.

CSB Bancorp , Ohio - $24.5M, February 2016     
CSB Bancorp  announced that Steven R. Bailey, EVP, COO and CIO of the company and its wholly owned affiliate The Commercial & Savings Bank, notified the company that he will be retiring and resigning his positions with the Companies, effective March 4, 2016.

Diadexus, California - $18.10M, March 2016
Diadexus announced that Dr.  Emilia Zychlinksy, EVP and Chief Technical Officer, notified the company on March 14, 2016, that she is resigning effective as of April 1, 2016. She will continue in that role until the effective date of her resignation.

Microphase, Connecticut - $9.12M, December 2016
The Company
approved the appointment of Mr. Michael Ghadaksaz as the CEO of the Company. Prior to the Ghadaksaz appointment, Ghadaksaz served as the CTO and CMO. No tech chief replacement has been announced.

NMI Holdings, California - $7.1M, January 2015  
Stan Pachura, EVP and CIO, leaves. Pachura's current duties and responsibilities will be assumed by existing members of the Company's management team, until a replacement is chosen.

Uni-Pixel, California - $2.87M, January 2016
On December 28, 2015, Robert Petcavich, the SVP and CTO of Uni-Pixel, Inc, tendered to the company his resignation for personal reasons, effective as of December 31, 2015. Mr. Petcavich will continue to provide services to the company as a consultant.

B-Scada, Florida - $1.8M, April 2016
B-Scada announced that Joshua Weeks, CTO, resigned his position effective April 1, 2016.

SPYR, Colorado - $1.6M, April 2016
SPYR announced that effective March 31, 2016, Mark McGarrity, the Company's CIO, resigned his position with the company.

Knosys, Australia - $0.805M, September 2016
Knosys Limited announced that Mr. Alistair Wardlaw has resigned from the Board and as Knosys' CTO. His other business interests include his stake in the MMG Interactive partnership (MMGI), which is the major subcontractor to Knosys in technology support and provision of IT services. Knosys will continue to sub-contract technology services to MMGI.

Managing Board member Roland Busch (52), who is currently responsible for the Energy Management Division and the Region Asia /Australia, has been appointed CTO, effective December 1, 2016. In this capacity, he will head Corporate Technology (CT), Siemens' central research and development unit. Busch will also be responsible for Corporate Development (CD) and for the Venturing Unit next47.

AB Volvo, Sweden - $37.04B, December 2016
Volvo has named Atif Rafiq as its new SVP for IT and chief digital officer. Rafiq set up McDonald's Silicon Valley outpost in 2014 in an effort to better train and recruit digital talent. Projects he has overseen include tests of mobile ordering and payment, as well as McDonald's World Cup effort, which included an augmented reality game. Before McDonald's he held general management roles at Amazon, Yahoo, and AOL.

Deutsche Bank, Germany - $35B, December 2016
Philip Milne has been appointed as CTO for innovation. Milne joined Deutsche Bank in early November from a Silicon Valley virtual reality startup Lighthouse Labs.

Sprint, Kansas - $32.18B, December 2016
Former Comcast exec Rob Roy joins Sprint as Chief Digital Officer to advance the company’s use of online and mobile technology to improve the customer experience.

Avnet, Arizona - $26.21B, December 2016
Avnet appointed Kevin Summers as its CIO. Summers has extensive experience in leading large-scale IT organizations, which includes serving in CIO positions with H&R Block, Lowe’s, Whirlpool and The Coca-Cola Company, as well as senior executive positions at AT&T and GE. Summers succeeds Steve Phillips, who has decided to leave Avnet.

Telstra, Australia - $19.74B, December 2016
Telstra has appointed Hakan Eriksson as its CTO. Eriksson previously served as SEA and Oceania chief strategy officer at Ericsson. He will replace Vish Nandlall who resigned from his position of Telstra CTO in May.

Safran, France - $18.1B, November 2016
Daniel Dubreuil was named Chief Digital Officer, products and services, and is in charge of another key facet of digital: the development, production engineering and in-service monitoring of Safran's products.

AECOM, California - $17.41B, December 2016
AECOM has appointed Ms. Colette Munro in a new role as Chief Digital Officer to lead its Digital by Design strategy across Australia and New Zealand (ANZ).

Electrolux has named JP Iversen as its new CIO. Iversen is currently VP of information systems and has been acting CIO since September.

Singapore Telecommunications limited announced that with effect from 1 April, 2017, Mark Chong will be appointed Group CTO to lead technology strategy and innovations across the Group. He relinquishes his current role of CEO International from 1 April.

Thomson Reuters, Pennsylvania, $12.2B, November 2016
GE Cybersecurity Chief Tim McKnight has joined Thomson Reuters as CISO.

QVC Group, Colorado - $9.17B, December 2016
Liberty Interactive subsidiary, QVC, named Todd Sprinkle as its new CIO. Sprinkle joined the company in 2007, and has also worked at Turner Broadcasting and Macy's (M).

Univar, Illinois - $8.9B, December 2016
Univar named Eric Foster as CIO. Foster succeeds Erik Viens. Foster most recently served as CIO and SVP of Baxalta.

RSA Insurance Group, United Kingdom - $6.68B, November 2016
RSA has announced that it has appointed David Germain to the role of Group CTO. He brings over 20 years' experience in financial services including transformation, CIO and COO roles at GE Capital, Close Brothers, Deutsche Bank and most recently as head of technology, operations and product at RBS.

American Eagle Outfitters, Pennsylvania - $3.3B, November 2016
American Eagle Outfitters has named Time Inc. CTO Colin Bodell as its first CTO.

Rent-A-Center, Texas - $3.27B, December 2016
Rent-A-Center announced the hiring of Lety Nettles to fill the newly created role of VP of digital integration. Nettles joins Rent-A-Center with over 20 years of technology experience with Dell , Buchanan Technologies, Oracle and Accenture. Most recently she served as a technology executive designing integration framework and change practices for Walmart.

Amer Sports, Finland - $2.6B, November 2016
Amer Sports' Chief Digital Officer Heikki Norta is appointed President, Amer Sports Connected Devices and Services. Previously Norta has worked in various leadership positions at Nokia and Microsoft in the areas of wireless products and digital services.

Graham Holdings Company, Virginia - $2.58B, December 2016
The Washington Post named Scot Gillespie to the newly created position of VP and CTO. Gillespie joins The Post from W. W. Grainger, where he served as VP of Engineering.

Blackberry, Canada- $2.5B, November 2016
BlackBerry named Rear Admiral Robert "Bob" E. Day, Jr., U.S. Coast Guard (Ret.) to lead their forthcoming federal Cybersecurity Operations Center (CSOC) and product FedRAMP initiatives. Having been a key member of BlackBerry's AtHoc advisory board since retiring in 2014 and serving five years as CIO and Commander of Coast Guard Cyber Command, Rear Admiral Day brings 34-years of career experience in Federal IT and cybersecurity to the position.

Flipkart, India - $1.5B, November 2016
Flipkart announced that Peeyush Ranjan has quit the company as CTO and will leave by December end. Flipkart Labs, an initiative headed by Ranjan, will be led by Ravi Garikipati, Flipkart's head of engineering. Ranjan will be joining Airbnb in San Francisco as VP of engineering.

Airbnb, California - $900M, November 2016
Flipkart CTO Peeyush Ranjan will be joining Airbnb in San Francisco as VP of engineering.

DLT Solutions, Virginia - $900M, December 2016
DLT Solutions appointed David Rubal as the company’s first chief technologist for data and analytics. Prior to joining DLT, Rubal served in senior leadership roles at Oracle, Blue Coat Systems, Tableau Software, EMC, and Cisco, among others.

WEX, Maine - $854.6M, December 2016
WEX announced that David Cooper has joined the company in the newly created role of CTO. Prior to joining WEX, Cooper held several senior technology positions, including head of global operations at GlobeOne, SVP of technology at Green Dot, and CTO and SVP of product development at both Fiserv and CashEdge.

Vector, New Zealand - $816.1M, December 2016
Vector appointed Nikhil Ravishankar to the new executive role of Chief Digital Officer. Nikhil joins Vector from Accenture where he held the position of Managing Director for NZ operations and also sits on their Global Advisory Council for Telecommunications and Media practice.

Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, California - $657M, December 2016
Kratos Defense & Security Solutions announced that Kevin Walden has been appointed as CIO of the company. Mr. Walden has been serving as acting CIO since earlier this year. 

California Water Service Group, California - $584.4M, December 2016
California Water Service Group announced the promotion of Michael B. Luu from VP of Customer Service & IT to VP of Customer Service and CIO. 

Telenor Magyarország, Hungary - $538.2M, November 2016
Telenor Hungary appointed György Koller as Chief Technical Office. György Koller has been working in executive positions at various business units of Telenor Group for 22 years. He spent 17 years with Telenor Hungary at functions including network and product development and customer service.

Warner Music Group, New York - $436M, December 2016
Warner Music Group has added GROUPM Global Managing Partner of Delivery Ralph Munsen as CIO.

Warner Music Group has added INgrooves Music Group President/COO Vinnie Freda as Chief Data Officer.  

Forcepoint, Texas - $441.4M, December 2016
Forcepoint announced Meerah Rajavel joins the company as its new CIO. Most recently, Rajavel was the CIO at Qlik.

Intex Technologies, India - $329M, November 2016
Intex Technologies appointed Mr. Yashpal Soni as CIO. Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.
