April 2021 Open CIO, CTO and CISO roles April 2021 Open CIO, CTO and CISO roles

April 19, 2021

Last week, we celebrated our 16th anniversary as Vell Executive Search. I wanted to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all who have worked with us, as clients, candidates, trusted advisers, and friends.

This edition of our newsletter looks at open technology officer roles, more specifically CIOs, Chief Digital Officers, Chief Technology Officers and CISOs, as well as title combinations there of, such as Chief Information and Digital Officer.

The geography covered is mostly the U.S. and Canada: we added a couple of big Latin American opportunities as well, but most of the research was focused on larger companies in the U.S. and Canada.

We cover some bigger CIO or CTO roles, then the CISO roles. We then highlight some others, including health care, academia and government. I hope you enjoy this newsletter and find it useful. Suggestions and corrections are most welcomed and appreciated.

Vell has built a reputation for recruiting talented high-performing leadership teams globally.

Our Methodology

Our methodology for identifying open tech officer roles includes these sources:

  • Tech officer exits without an apparent replacement, found either through a press release or a credible source.
  • Companies with tech officers with an "interim" or "acting" title.
  • Promotions indicating that a tech officer is likely leaving the role. For example, a CIO becoming a President of a division would be listed. One person taking on two roles, such as at Coca-Cola where the Chief Innovation and Chief Information roles are now handled by one person, would also be listed. A CIO getting promoted from SVP to EVP or adding “digital” to a title is likely not listed.
  • Significant reorganizations, such as at Nieman Marcus, where a new EVP joins the company and the CIO and Chief Digital Officer leave, are also listed, although we are not sure of the new organization's needs.

This does not necessarily mean that the organization will replace that role, but chances are they might. Always check that there is no recent announcement. Capital IQ was the source for revenues. We use "b" for billions and "m" for millions. We have fact checked this as of April 12, 2021.
