Welcome to the 60th Edition of the Open Tech Roles newsletter. This newsletter covers open technology roles as of March 10th, 2019 and technology appointments for past 28 days ending March 10th, 2019.

Titles are evolving and are specializing:

  • The head of technology (IT) role has different titles, historically a CIO, is now either CIO, CTO or Engineering (including CIO role) and a Chief Digital Officer titles (or combinations thereof). Note: sometimes the head of IT is the EVP Tech & Ops with CIO type roots.
  • The CTO role has multiple contexts and meanings: (1) CTOs that manage IT (where the CIO reports in); (2) CTOs that manage the tech infrastructure (a more traditional definition); (3) CTOs - Products/ Tech Strategy. They are essentially tech vendor CTOs and typically manage IT as well, but it is not their primary role or orientation.

  • Medtronic, MN, Jan 2019 - Medtronic CIO Michael Hedges is retiring. We have heard that the role has been filled although no one has been announced yet. Medtronic is a global leader in medical technology, services, and solutions.
  • State Street Global Advisors, MA, Nov 2018 - The Corporate CIO’s role is to provide leadership for developing and implementing business and strategic technology initiatives. The Corporate CIO directs the local planning, prioritization, and implementation of Business and Enterprise IT systems in support of corporate business operations, including end user computing, in order to improve cost effectiveness, service quality, and business mission development.
  • Amplify Credit Union, TX, Feb 2019 - Amplify Credit Union is seeking a SVP-CIO to lead the technological and informational needs of the organization. The SVP-CIO will work closely with the Chief Experience Officer to ensure that the technology we provide provides our members with the best banking experience possible.
  • Ellie Mae, CA, Nov 2018 - Peter Hirsch, EVP, Technology and Operations of the company, left the company effective January 2, 2019. No replacement announced.
  • Ameris Bancorp, GA, Dec 2018 - The company announced the retirement of Joseph B. Kissel, the company’s EVP & CIO, effective as of December 31, 2018.
  • Kinsale Capital Group, VA, Nov 2018 - William J. Kenney, Jr. notified Kinsale Capital Group that he will be stepping down from his current role as SVP & CIO, effective July 1, 2019, and transition to a new part-time consulting role managing critical development projects for the Company as well as other endeavors unrelated to the Company.
  • Spok Holdings, VA, Aug 2018 - Thomas G. Saine, 55, the CIO of Virginia based global leader in healthcare communications Spok Holdings, passed away unexpectedly. Mr. Saine served as CIO of the Company since August 2008, and previously served as the company's CTO, President of GTES, an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of the company, VP of Corporate Technical Operations and VP, Technology and Integration.
  • University of Oklahoma, OK, Jun 2017 - David Horton currently serves as interim CIO overseeing information technology at OU's three campuses.
  • Biotest, FL, Jan 2018 - Stuart Kippelman has taken on the temporary role of Interim CIO at the pharmaceutical company.
  • U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Washington, D.C., Aug 2018 - Beth Killoran, who served as CIO for HHS for the past two years, will help develop a strategic IT plan for the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, shifting roles. HHS CTO Ed Simcox will stand in as acting CIO. The move follows other high-level IT staff departures at the health agency this year, including the loss of former CTO Bruce Greenstein, as well as its CISO.
  • T.D. Williamson, OK, Nov 2018 - The company is seeking a CIO to direct the information systems activities, including systems strategy, design, programming and procedures, and operation of computer and related IT equipment for TDW’s world-wide operation. T. D. Williamson develops and manufactures pipeline equipment and provides services for onshore and offshore applications.
  • Mirror Show Management, NY, Dec 2018 - The company is looking for a CIO with proven experience as CIO or similar C level role. Mirror Show Management (MSM) is a woman-owned customer experience agency specializing in exhibits, events and environments.
  • Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), MA, Feb 2019 - MBTA seeks an experienced CIO to direct and oversee the overall activities of the MBTA's Information Technology (IT) Department and contribute to the overall business strategy development, bringing current knowledge and future vision of leveraging information and technology.

  • Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), IL, Mar 2019 - RSNA is seeking a CIO. Search firm Witt/Kieffer has been retained to conduct the search for the CIO at RSNA.

CTOs (Non Tech Vendor Product/ CIO/IT)

  • AutoNation, FL, Jan 2019 - EVP and CTO, Tom Conophy, will be leaving the Company amid restructuring. The restructuring comes as analysts forecast a dip in U.S. vehicle sales this year. New vehicle sales in the United States are expected to drop as higher interest rates and rising prices could prompt customers to hold off their car-buying plans, the National Automobile Dealers Association said last month. AutoNation, through its subsidiaries, operates as an automotive retailer in the United States.
  • Leidos, MD, Mar 2019 - Leidos has a career opportunity for an Intelligence Group Cyber and SIGINT Solutions (CSS) Operation CTO located in Columbia, MD.
  • U.S. Auto Parts Network, CA, Jan 2019 - U.S. Auto Parts Network announced that Roger Hoffmann, the company’s CTO, resigned from the company. U.S. Auto Parts Network, together with its subsidiaries, operates as an online provider of aftermarket auto parts and accessories primarily in the United States and the Philippines.

CTOs - Tech Products/ Tech Strategy

  • AT&T, TX, Feb 2019 - Pam Parisian, 60, is retiring from AT&T as President of Technology Development. No replacement has been announced yet.
  • Leidos (Defense Group), VA, Mar 2019 - The Leidos Defense Group has an opening for a Group CTO, located in Reston, VA. The CTO will be responsible for overall technical execution to include technical solutions for priority captures, internal research and development (IR&D) projects and technical performance on major programs. 
  • Analog Devices, MA, Sept 2018 - Peter Real informed Analog Devices that he was resigning from his position as SVP and CTO of the Company, due to health reasons. Before the CTO role, he was VP, High Speed Products. There is still no announcement on who will replace him. 
  • Conformis, MA, Sep 2018 - Daniel Steines, M.D, M.S., CTO, of Conformis, announced his resignation from the company. He will assist the company in transitioning his responsibilities to other executive officers through the date of his departure and will continue to serve as a consultant to the company following his departure.
  • Accelerize, CA, Feb 2018 - Dave Stewart, CTO of Accelerize, resigned from his position. Accelerize Inc. provides software solutions for businesses to enhance their digital advertising spend in the United States, Europe, and internationally.
  • FISION Corporation, MN, Jun 2018 - Effective Jun 15, 2018, Wade Anderson resigned as CTO (as well as Chief Product Officer). The Company develops proprietary cloud-based software solutions to automate the marketing functions and activities of its customers. 
  • Daybreak Game Company, CA, Mar 2019 - The company is looking for a CTO, who will oversee core/game tech groups and also provide oversight to Technical Directors of each game franchise. Best known for blockbuster hits and franchises such as H1Z1®, DC Universe™ Online, PlanetSide®, and EverQuest®, Daybreak creates, develops, and provides compelling online entertainment for millions of gamers worldwide.
  • Stratacent, NY, Mar 2019 - The IT solutions company is currently seeking a CTO to enable the future growth and transformation of our company.   • Verisk Analytics, New Jersey, Mar 2019 - The company is looking for a Chief Data Officer to ensure a view of what is the optimal data content needed to support and enhance the business’s mission and objectives is developed and maintained. Verisk is a leading data analytics provider serving customers in insurance, energy and specialized markets, and financial services.
  • Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, NY, Jan 2019 - MGM is looking for a Chief Data Officer who will support our product, sales, leadership and marketing teams in their LA and NY offices with insights gained from analyzing data.

The level of the role is unclear. 
  • Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Washington, D.C, Mar 2019 - Consumer Financial Protection Bureau  is looking for a Chief Data Officer. The Chief Data Officer position is located in the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Office of the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and oversees the Bureau’s data and information teams responsible for the proper intake, management, oversight and disposition of the Bureau’s information assets.

  • Vonage, NJ,  Feb 2019 - High-quality voice and messaging software services company Vonage seeks a Chief Digital Officer. Reporting directly to the CMO, the Chief Digital Officer’s primary responsibility is to drive the achievement of our financial goals for the API Platform and the Applications Groups through a customer-centric approach to using our web presence, content marketing, digital technology, demand generation, and digital marketing.
  • WSFS Bank, DE, Jan 2019 - WSFS Bank is currently seeking a Chief Digital Officer.   • General Dynamics, TX, Feb 2019 - General Dynamics is seeking a CISO under its Data Center Services (DCS) program, which includes scope for a Private Cloud, Computing, and Data Center Facility Management. The data centers and private cloud capabilities through the DCS provide the central hub of all computing for DCS Customers that require infrastructure services on which to build and operate their applications. The CISO will be responsible for security strategy, security program oversight and security architecture development and implementation for the organization.
  • DXC Technology, VA, Jan 2019 - DXC is seeking a CISO to provide senior leadership and oversight of the DXC global security architecture.
  • 8x8, CA, Dec 2018 - 8x8 continues to execute on its vision and path a leading provider of enterprise cloud communications solutions and newly created a CISO leadership position, which will have a meaningful seat at the table with influence over the Chief Product Officer, Engineering, CEO and CFO while ensuring that 8x8 is seen as a leader in security.
  • GuidePoint Security, FL, Aug 2018 - GuidePoint Security is seeking a CISO, who will be responsible for securing GuidePoint’s operations, both internally and client-facing.   • Zoom Information, MA, Jan 2019 - In second quarter of this year, the CIO will be joined by a new chief information security officer (CISO).

  • University of Miami, FL, Mar 2019 - The University of Miami is seeking a Chief Information Security Officer to join the IT Department. The CISO will report to the CIO, and will be responsible for the development and delivery of a comprehensive information security strategy to optimize the security posture of the university. 
  • Atria Wealth Solutions, CA, Mar 2019 - The firm is looking for a Chief Information Security Officer to join their rapidly growing financial services organization.
  • Clayton Homes, TN, Mar 2019 - Clayton Homes, a Berkshire Hathaway Company and a vertically integrated housing company that builds, sells, and insures affordable housing, is looking for a Chief Information Security Officer, who will be responsible for providing strategic thought leadership and measurable, defined outcomes in the oversight and delivery of a robust Clayton enterprise information security program.

  • Compagnie Financière Richemont, Switzerland, May 2018 - Dr. Jean-Jacques Van Oosten has relinquished his responsibilities as CTO of the Swiss luxury goods giant, for personal reasons after a brief period of the newly created role.

Data Chiefs

  • Publicis Groupe, France, Jul 2018 - Publicis Groupe chief data officer Jason Kodish announced his resignation. As Chief Data Officer, Kodish has been driving the collective power of the talent within the Data and Analytics practices within the Groupe, working as a leadership team that is uniting a team of more than 3,500 engineers, data scientists, analysts and tech leaders. The company is looking for Kodish's successor.

Security Chiefs/ CISOs

  • Equiniti, UK, Dec 2018 - The UK-based Fin Tech and Business Process Outsourcer is searching for a CISO who will lead the Group Information Security team and is a member of the Group IT Leadership team. This role is essential to the IT and business strategy, by enabling Equiniti to maintain a competitive edge through its robust security management framework.

CIO Roles

  • CVS Health, RI - CVS Health promoted its SVP of client services, Roshan Navagamuwa, to EVP and CIO. Navagamuwa will lead technology operations and innovation, including client services for CVS Caremark. One of his primary responsibilities will involve overseeing integration of the company's IT systems with Aetna's, according to a CVS Health statement. Navagamuwa will partner with Meg McCarthy, the company's EVP of operations and technology. He has served as interim CIO for the last year. In his new role, Navagamuwa will report to Jon Roberts, EVP and COO of CVS Health. 
  • Quest Diagnostics, NJ - Quest Diagnostics announced that Gabrielle Wolfson has been named SVP and Chief Information and Digital Officer. She reports directly to Steve Rusckowski, Chairman, President and CEO, and is based at the company's headquarters in Secaucus, N.J. Ms. Wolfson is responsible for leading information technology, data informatics and digital solutions for Quest Diagnostics. These include the company's Quanum suite of healthcare IT solutions and data analytics, myQuest patient mobile app and portal, and digital engagement for the company's 2,200 patient service centers. Wolfson joins Quest Diagnostics from Xerox Corp. where had she served as CIO (CIO) since 2016. Quest Diagnostics Incorporated provides diagnostic testing, information, and services in the United States and internationally.
  • SS&C Technologies Holdings, CT - SS&C Technologies Holdings appointed Joseph Maxwell as Technology Head of SS&C GlobeOp's Hedge Fund Administration group. Joe will lead the company's hedge fund technology and architecture behind the world's #1 fund administration business. Prior to joining SS&C, Joe spent over 12 years at Citco; 8 of which he served as the CIO for the Citco Group of Companies. 
  • Standard Insurance Company, OR - Standard Insurance Company reported that John Felton has been hired as the VP of Information Technology Enterprise Services. Felton comes to The Standard after 21 years at Sprint Corp. where he held a variety of roles in the information technology organization, most recently as VP. Standard Insurance Company provides insurance, retirement, and investment products and services.
  • Rent-A-Center, TX - Rent-A-Center and Fred E. Herman mutually agreed that Mr. Herman would resign from his position as EVP - CIO. Mr. Herman’s resignation is a termination without “cause” pursuant to Section 3(a) of the executive transition agreement between Mr. Herman and the Company. Mike Santimaw, previously the Company’s VP of Information Security, Innovation Labs and Corporate Solutions, has been promoted to CIO. Rent-A-Center, together with its subsidiaries, leases household durable goods to customers on a rent-to-own basis.
  • FleetCor Technologies, GA - FLEETCOR Technologies appointed Scott duFour as Global CIO. He will report to Ron Clarke, Chairman and CEO of FLEETCOR. John Reed, FLEETCOR’s CIO since 2013, will be retiring from the position but will assist Scott with the transition until his retirement date. Prior to joining FLEETCOR, Scott held several technology leadership roles at McKesson and was most recently the CIO for McKesson Europe. FleetCor Technologies provides commercial payment solutions.
  • TCF Financial Corp., MN - Chemical Financial Corp. and TCF Financial Corp. reported executive leadership appointments for the combined company. Enterprise CIO and business partner at TCF Financial Corporation Tom Butterfield will become CIO. 
  • Carnegie Mellon University, PA - Carnegie Mellon University has appointed Stan Waddell as the new associate VP and CIO. Waddell will serve on the Division of Operations Senior Leadership Team, as well as the University Leadership Council. Previously, Waddell was associate VP and CIO at the University of New Hampshir. 
  • Zendesk, CA - Zendesk appointed former Adobe executive Colleen Berube as CIO. Berube joins as CIO, having formerly served as EVP and CTO of Fisher Investments and executive in residence at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Zendesk, a software development company, provides SaaS products for organizations.
  • Shake Shack, NY - Dave Harris has been named as CIO and will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of technology at Shake Shack. Prior to joining Shake Shack, Dave served as VP of Digital Technology at Newell Brands. Shake Shack owns, operates, and licenses Shake Shack restaurants (Shacks) in the United States and internationally.
  • AvidXchange, NC - Angelic Gibson is the company's new CIO. In her role, Gibson now oversees the strategy behind development, operations and technology services. She came on board at AvidXchange in October. Prior to this role, Gibson was a SVP of information technology at TKXS, which offers data solutions to businesses. AvidXchange provides accounts payable and payment automation solutions for midsize companies.
  • Dime Community Bancshares, NY - Dime Community Bancshares appointed Michael J. Fegan as CTO of the organization. Prior to joining Dime, Mr. Fegan served as the Chief Information and Operations Officer of Investors Bank, where he directed the Information Technology, Client Care, PMO, Deposit Services, Cash Management and Loan Servicing functions. Dime Community Bancshares operates as the holding company for Dime Community Bank that provides commercial banking and financial services in New York.
  • Prime Meridian Bank, FL - Monté Ward has been promoted to become the EVP and CIO. Former Information Security Officer/SVP of Bank Operations. 
  • Pacific Architects and Engineers, VA - PAE has named James Benton their CIO.   • DHI Group, NY - DHI Group announced that it has hired Paul Farnsworth as its new CTO. Farnsworth will report directly to CEO Art Zeile. Prior to joining DHI, Mr. Farnsworth was the CTO at Reed Group. DHI Group provides data, insights, and employment connections through specialized services for technology professionals in the United States and internationally.
  • American Stock Transfer & Trust Company, LLC, NY - AST reported that Alan Eddie has joined as CTO, overseeing the company's technology strategy and operations. Based in New York, Eddie reports to President and CEO Marty Flanigan. He was most recently CIO of Trading Technology at Nordea, delivering and managing technology solutions for its Capital Markets, Wholesale Banking, Wealth Management and Asset Management practices.   • Sinclair Broadcast Group, MD - Sinclair Broadcast Group announced that Amit Mathur has been named as VP of Product Engineering.   • Smartsheet, WA - Smartsheet announced that Praerit Garg has joined the company as CTO. Garg will lead the engineering organization and drive technical strategy for a platform that customers around the globe rely on to improve how they work. He was most recently General Manager of Identity, Directory and Access Services at AWS, where he built and launched foundational services that enabled customers to more easily manage their IT infrastructure at scale.   • Absolute Software Corporation, BC, Canada - Absolute Software appointed Dr. Nicko van Someren as the company’s new CTO. Prior to his role at Absolute, van Someren served as Chief Security Officer and CIO at nanopay, a financial services technology company where he was responsible for all security and IT operations. Van Someren has also served as CTO at the Linux Foundation and Good Technologies.   • National Cable Communications LLC, NY - NCC Media announced that it has named Gerrit Niemeijer as CTO. At NCC, he will oversee the ongoing development of the company's TV advertising platform. Niemeijer was a founding member of the Visible World team and served as CTO for 17 years from the company's inception through its sale to Comcast.   • Stratus Technologies, MA - Stratus Technologies announced that it has appointed John Vicente as CTO. He will report directly to President and CEO Dave Laurello. Mr. Vicente comes to Stratus from Intel, where he spent the past 25 years consistently taking on more responsibility at the company. Most recently, he ran the CTO Office for industrial IoT, working in areas from process and discrete manufacturing to oil and gas.  Stratus Technologies designs and develops software and platform solutions for customers worldwide.
  • Hello Pal International, BC, Canada - Daniel Kou is stepping down as CTO of the Company and will be replaced by Huang Jingsu (also known as Jason Huang). Mr. Huang is another veteran of the live-streaming industry with over 10 years of experience in the industry. He most recently served as CTO at Pajia where he led the development of the company's live-streaming platform from scratch, which ultimately served over 10 million registered users and successfully sustained over 500,000 daily active users.   • Stella, MN - Shahid Alam joined the company as SVP and chief analytics and information officer. Alam comes to Stella with more than 15 years of data analytics and technology experience in the health care industry. Most recently, he was VP of enterprise analytics at Centene Corporation where he led software, data, and platform technology to support data and analytics strategy. Stella is the parent company to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota and a growing number of diversified businesses collectively focused on delivering better health.
  • Proof Mark, AZ - Proof Analytics announced that renowned economist and data scientist Prof. Dr. Magnus Söderberg has joined as the company’s Chief Insights and Analytics Officer. Prof. Dr. Söderberg will lead Proof’s internal data science team and work closely with CTO Tom Bishop and advisors such as Dr. Melissa Kovacs, who teaches economics and data science at Arizona State University.   • MedeAnalytics, CA - MedeAnalytics appointed Cindi Carter as chief security officer.   • PostNord AB, Sweden - PostNord announced that Dane Egil Møller Nielsen will take over responsibility for newly created Operations & Technology unit. This consists of the former Technology & Infrastructure unit, the operational parts of the E-com & Logistics and Communications Services business areas, and the quality team from Corporate Affairs. Egil Møller Nielsen will also be a member of PostNord's Group Executive Team and will report directly to President and Group CEO Håkan Ericsson. He joins from SmartCentres, where among other things he has started PenguinPickUp and PenguinFresh, two market participants that have acted as a disruptive force in the Canadian market for home delivery of food and parcels. PostNord AB provides communications and logistics solutions in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and internationally.

  • Zalando SE, Germany - Jim Freeman, currently SVP Engineering, joined Zalando in April 2018 from Amazon, where he was responsible for launching, growing, and scaling Prime Video and for launching communication experiences for Alexa and Echo devices. He will join the Management Board as CTO, assuming responsibility for Zalando's product and technology strategy and execution. Zalando SE operates as an online fashion retailer in Europe.
  • Marvell Technology Group, Bermuda - Marvell Technology Group Ltd. announced that Sandeep Bharathi has joined the company as SVP of central engineering. Prior to joining Marvell in 2019, Sandeep served as VP of Engineering at Intel, where he led FPGA product and technology development. Neil Kim, EVP and CTO of Marvell Technology Group Ltd., notified the company of his decision to return to retirement after May 31, 2019. Marvell Technology Group Ltd. designs, develops, and markets analog, mixed-signal, digital signal processing, and embedded and standalone integrated circuits.

  • Banco Santander, SA, Spain - Santander has appointed Aiaz Kazi as Chief Platform Officer. Mr. Kazi joins Santander from Google to support the bank's transformation to become an open platform for financial services, reporting directly to Chief Digital and Innovation Officer, Lindsey Argalas. In this newly created role, Mr. Kazi will be responsible for helping the bank evolve the way it delivers products and services to its customers. He will lead the open platform for financial services working with Santander's global technology division and teams across the bank's 10 core markets in Europe and the Americas. 
  • Ajinomoto Co., Japan - Ajinomoto Co. announced management changes. The company announced that Hiroshi Fukushi currently Representative Director, Member of the Board & Corporate SVP will be in new position of Representative Director, Member of the Board & Corporate Executive Deputy President, Chief Digital Officer (CDO).  Ajinomoto Co. provides various food products worldwide.
  • LEGO A/S, Denmark - The LEGO Group has appointed JJ Van Oosten as Chief Digital Officer. Van Oosten will join the company’s Executive Leadership Team and report directly to the CEO, Niels B. Christiansen. He will play a vital role in all aspects of the Group’s digital strategy from technology to e-commerce and shopper and consumer engagement. JJ has more than 25 years’ experience in digital leadership roles. He was notably Chief Digital Officer of German retailer, REWE where he oversaw all aspects of the digital agenda, including e-commerce operations, technology infrastructure and digital marketing. 
  • ProSiebenSat.1 Media, Germany - ProSiebenSat.1 has appointed Nick Thexton to the newly created position of CTO, as the company continues to advance the technological transformation of its business. He will report to CEO Max Conze. Thexton joins the German media company from satellite operator Inmarsat, where he has been Chief Digital Product Officer and a member of the executive management board since 2017. ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE is a European mass media company, based in Germany. It operates free-to-air commercial TV channels, pay television channels, radio stations and related print businesses.

Dora Vell is the CEO of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston that recruits technology executives and board members for companies ranging from promising tech startups to Fortune 100 companies. Throughout her 22-year career in executive search, she has successfully completed hundreds of assignments, placing board members, CEOs, COOs, CIOs, technology officers, vice presidents and many other C-level executives. Prior to founding Vell Executive Search in 2005, she was a partner at the executive search consulting firm Heidrick & Struggles for seven years. Before her career in executive search, Vell worked for 11 years at IBM Canada in software-related roles of increasing responsibility.
