Gender Diversity on Technology Boards - Accenture, PayPal, Intuit & Others

Tech companies have increasingly been feeling the investor pressure to refresh their board of directors. Several companies are focusing on diversity and adding female directors. Here we have compiled the female board appointments in tech from June 10 to September 16, 2017.

Accenture Appoints Estee Lauder’s CFO Tracey T. Travis, 55, as Board Member

PayPal appoints media exec and President, BBC Worldwide Ann Sarnoff, 55, to its Board of Directors

Intuit appointed Deborah (Deb) Liu, leader of Facebook's developer and commerce businesses, to its board

Paychex’s board has appointed most recent EVP & CMO of FireEye Kara Wilson, 47, to board. Wilson is now CMO at Rubrik

Cadence Design Systems elects former Frontier Communications’ CEO Mary Agnes Wilderotter, 62, as Director

Splunk named Sara Baack, 45, CMO of Equinix, and Elisa Steele, 50, former CEO and president of Jive Software, to its Board.

Marvell has appointed Gerri Elliott, 61, to its Board. She previously served as EVP and Chief Customer Officer for Juniper Networks

Teradyne appointed Marilyn Matz, 63, to Board. Co-Founder of Paradigm4, the creators of SciDB and Cognex, a leader in vision systems

PTC appointed Dr. Corinna Lathan, CEO, Co-Founder, and Board Chair of AnthroTronix, as newest board member

Logitech International appointed Wendy Becker, former CEO of Jack Wills, and Neela Montgomery, nominated CEO of Crate and Barrel, to the board.

Cypress Semiconductor’s newest director Catherine P. Lego, 60, brings established board record with public technology companies. Founder, owner and principal of Lego Ventures.

Digital communications firm ViaSat appointed Varsha Rao, 47, to its Board. Rao is the former Head of Global Operations at Airbnb

comScore, the leading cross-platform measurement company that measures audiences, brands and consumer behaviour, appointed five new members to the Board: Lisa Gersh, former CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and Susan Riley, former CFO of Eastern Outfitters, The Children’s Place, and other consumer companies

Real-time open source big data integration software company Talend named Former Outerwall interim CEO and SVP of Big Data Nora Denzel to its board. 

Intel’s newest subsidiary Mobileye, the leading developer of vision technology for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving, appointed Tiffany D. Silva as executive director.


Intel Senior Leader Stacy Smith to Retire from Executive as well as Board Role. Stacy Smith, 54, group president of manufacturing, operations and sales, is retiring after more than 30 years at the company. Smith will stay on board through the end of January.

Nancy E. Cooper, 63, a director of Teradata, will retire from the Board. She is retired CFO of CA Technologies

Elizabeth J. Huebner, 59, who has served as a director of Blucora since 2009, is retiring from the Board. She is xCFO of Getty Images


Tata Consulting Services’ (TCS) Director Ms. Aarthi Subramanian, 50, steps down from the Tata Board to become Chief Digital Officer of the parent company.  

Margaret C. Whitman, 61, steps down as Chairman and Board Member of HP Inc., while remaining at the helm of HP Enterprise. Chip Bergh, 59, Lead Independent Director and CEO of Levi Strauss, is named independent Chairman of the board.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the CEO of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston that recruits technology executives and board members for companies ranging from promising tech startups to Fortune 100 companies. Throughout her 22-year career in executive search, she has successfully completed hundreds of assignments, placing board members, CEOs, COOs, CIOs, technology officers, vice presidents and many other C-level executives. Vell’s clients span both private and public companies and her work has included searches in markets large and small across the U.S. and Canada.

Prior to founding Vell Executive Search in 2005, she was a partner at the executive search consulting firm Heidrick & Struggles for seven years. She started in the Technology Practice in the Toronto office, became the firm’s Technology Practice leader for Canada, and then joined the firm’s Boston office.

Before her career in executive search, Vell worked for 11 years at IBM Canada in software-related roles of increasing responsibility. She started as a software engineer, managed a software engineering team of 100, and then led software sales for IBM Canada. She holds seven worldwide software patents. This deep industry understanding has helped Vell Executive Search become a recognized leader in finding senior executive and board talent for software and SaaS companies.

Vell is a recognized industry thought leader who has published several reports on governance and leadership topics. She has been frequently quoted as an expert on executive and board leadership by outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, The OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. She has been a featured speaker on leadership at numerous conferences and at Columbia University's MBA program.

Vell has been a Fellow of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) and the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State University, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for Developmentally Handicapped Adults,, and RBC Capital Partners.

The trilingual daughter of a diplomat, Vell grew up in Canada, Greece, France, Switzerland and China. Her unique multicultural and international perspective, experiences as a woman in the male-dominated software field, and insights as a dual Canadian and U.S. citizen inform all her work for clients.

Vell received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a master’s in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a bachelor’s in Computer Science from Carleton University.  She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
