Microsoft Elects Former US Secretary of Commerce as Newest Board Member. Entrepreneur, civic leader and philanthropist and former United States Secretary of Commerce Penny S. Pritzker, 58, joins as director of Microsoft.

SAP Names COO Christian Klein, 37, to Executive Board to Lead Global Business Operations. 

Adobe Promotes Scott Belsky, 37, to Product Chief and EVP, Creative Cloud. Scott Belsky is the former VP of Products at Adobe, leading the Creative Cloud mobile product strategy.

What were the important tech board changes in the most recent couple of months? This leadership report covers tech board changes from 8/26 to 10/29 in 2017.  

We have three categories, roughly organized by company size. Industries/ categories per CapIQ classifications.

  • The Giants ($100b+ market cap): Microsoft, Samsung, Intel, Cisco
  • The Software Companies: Paypal, Salesforce, Intuit, eBay, RedHat, ServiceNow, Twitter, Square, Citrix, Splunk, Fortinet, FireEye and any others.
  • Others (Telecom, Hardware, Services, Payments): HP, Inc., Infosys, Ericsson, TSYS, Micro-Semi, TSYS, FLIR, Cypress Semi., Cree, Convergys, Blackhawk Networks, Boingo, ScanSource and others.

Some basic stats:

19.7% of the new board seats went to women;
15.6% of the board seats removed were women held seats.

The software industry is witnessing rapid transformation – from increasing shareholder activism to more diverse boards, from geographic expansion to acquisitions - the following board and leadership moves reflect all these trends. Here are the major changes from July 28th to September 23rd, 2017.

Board Moves

  • Activist Investor Not to Seek Re-Election to Microsoft Board; PepsiCo CFO to Join as Director - Microsoft board member D. Mason Morfit, 41, ValueAct Capital’s President and Chief Investment Officer, will not seek re-election. The board has appointed Hugh Johnston, 55, as Director. Johnston is vice chairman and CFO of PepsiCo. 
  • Salesforce Gets Influential Health Care Exec to Board - Bernard J. Tyson, 58, chairman and CEO of Kaiser Permanente, joined Salesforce’s board. 
  • Charles Giancarlo Resigns as ServiceNow Director - In connection with his appointment as CEO of Pure Storage, Charles Giancarlo, 60, resigned from the Board of ServiceNow. Former Avaya CEO.
  • Red Hat Announces New Chairman - Narendra K. Gupta, 68, co-founder of Nexus Venture Partners and long time director named as Chairman of the board. Succeeds retired U.S. Army Gen. H. Hugh Shelton, 75, who recently retired as chairman.
  • Constellation Software’s New Board Member Comes with Corporate Governance, Corporate Culture, And Corporate Law Preeminence - Constellation Software’s newest board member is Lawrence Cunningham, 55, Henry St. George Tucker III Research Professor at George Washington University Law School.

Microsoft Announces Departure of Jim Dubois as CIO; Appoints New President in Russia

Microsoft CIO Jim DuBois is leaving the company. DuBois is a more than 20-year Microsoft veteran who became the company's interim CIO in 2013 and permanent CIO the following year. He went on sabbatical earlier 2017.

Microsoft appointed T. Bochenek as new Microsoft President in Russia. Now he keeps the COO position at Microsoft in Russia.

Salesforce Appoints Chief Communications Officer from Starbucks 

Salesforce announced that Corey duBrowa will join the company as EVP and Chief Communications Officer. Most recently duBrowa served as SVP, Global Communications for Starbucks. During his seven-year tenure, he led the development and execution of global communications strategies to enhance and protect the Starbucks brand and corporate reputation as it grew from forty countries to seventy-five.

Microsoft Appoints New VP for Its Asia Pacific Operations

Microsoft appointed Andrea Della Mattea as its new VP of its Asia Pacific operations. Andrea Della Mattea joins Microsoft from Insight Enterprises. As the new VP of the Asia Pacific region, Della Mattea will lead Microsoft's business across the region, including over 2,000 employees and more than 11,000 Microsoft certified partners.

Kleiner Perkins’ Chief Product Officer Resigns from Amazon BoardWilliam B. Gordon

William B. Gordon, 66, resigned as a director of Amazon after fourteen years on the board. Gordon stepped down so he could provide consulting services to the company for two years. Gordon is currently the Chief Product Officer at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Bing also leads KPCB’s sFund, the investment initiative to fund and build applications and services that deliver on the promise of the social web.

Motorola Solutions Appoints Skype Exec as Head of Software        

Motorola Solutions announced the leader of the company’s new software organization. Andrew Sinclair, previously of the Skype division of Microsoft, joins Motorola Solutions as the company’s first-ever head of software. Sinclair will lead the company’s software organization. As head of software, Sinclair will lead an integrated team focused on development, sales and delivery of software that provides critical intelligence to public safety and commercial users.

Former Salesforce CMO Joins Ford Motor’s Board of Directors

Ford Motor Company announced the election of Lynn Vojvodich to the company’s board of directors. Vojvodich is a global technology executive who has built, grown and transformed businesses for more than 20 years. She works with venture capital firms as an advisor to pre-IPO and start-up companies. From 2013 to February 2017, Vojvodich was EVP and CMO of Salesforce.
