White House taps VMware exec Tony Scott as next U.S. CIO; Facebook’s Engineering Director Named IT Director
The White House has hired Tony Scott, currently CIO and SVP at VMware, as U.S. CIO. Scott joined VMware in 2013 to oversee the virtualization company's global IT group. Prior to VMware, Scott served as CIO at both Microsoft and The Walt Disney Company. Scott also served as CTO, overseeing information systems and services, at General Motors.
AmEx Global Business Travel Appoints VP Responsible for Traveler-Facing Technology
American Express Global Business Travel (GBT) appointed Evan Konwiser as VP, Digital Traveler. Konwiser will be responsible for traveler-facing technology, such as mobile and the online booking experience. Most recently, Konwiser was co-founder and COO of Lark Travel Group, a luxury leisure travel agency start-up. Previously, he built two other travel products: FlightCaster, which predicts flight delays real-time and was acquired in 2010, and Farely, which analyzes airline cost data for travel buyers. As part of the FlightCaster acquisition, he ran the travel business for Next Jump, and earlier was a consultant at Bain.
RBS's ex-boss in US, Ellen Alemany, Joins FIS’ Board
Fidelity National Information Services appoints Ellen Alemany, 58, to its board. A former head of RBS Americas, and Chair and CEO of RBS' Citizens Financial Group, Alemany has more than 35 years of experience in the financial industry. In 2007, Alemany joined as Head of RBS Americas, and Chair and CEO of RBS' Citizens Financial Group, and served as a consultant to the company until her retirement in 2013. Beginning as Area Head of Citibank's NY Leveraged Capital Group, she grew to CEO of Global Transaction Services at the firm and spent five years on the board of Citigroup North America. Alemany began her career in Operations at Chase Manhattan before being recruited to Citibank in 1987. She has served on the boards of ADP since 2011 and CIT Group since early 2014.
GE Appoints China CTO for Global Research
GE announced that Xiangli Chen, 49, has been appointed VP, China Technology Center, Global Research. He also serves as VP and CTO of GE China. Xiangli has been with GE for 19 years, holding several technology leadership roles, including serving as general manager of the China Technology Center and general manager of global technology for GE Healthcare in China.
Coca-Cola Nominates Expert on Health, Global Development and Humanitarian Issues to Board
The Coca-Cola Company named Helene D. Gayle, M.D., M.P.H., 57, to the Company’s Board of Directors. She is President and CEO of CARE USA, a leading international humanitarian organization whose poverty fighting programs reached approximately 122 million people last year in 84 countries.
American Express Elects Former IBM Chair/CEO and Alcatel EVP as Directors
American Express elected Samuel J. Palmisano, 61, and Anne Lauvergeon, 53, to its board of directors. Mr. Palmisano was chairman, president and CEO of IBM from 2003 to 2011. Under his leadership, IBM achieved record financial performance, transformed itself into a globally integrated enterprise and introduced its Smarter Planet agenda. Mr. Palmisano began his career with IBM in 1973. In a 39-year career with the company, he held leadership positions that included SVP and group executive of the Personal Systems Group, SVP and group executive of IBM Global Services, SVP and group executive of Enterprise Systems, and president and COO. He is a member of the board of Exxon Mobil.
Becton, Dickinson and Company Appoints Former CEO of Kinetic Concepts as Director
Becton, Dickinson and Company appointed Catherine M. Burzik, 60, to its Board of Directors. Catherine is the former President, CEO and Director of Kinetic Concepts, and the former President of Applied Biosystems, a unit of Applera and a provider of tools for the life sciences. Prior to that, she was President of Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, and was employed by Eastman Kodak, where she held various operations and marketing positions for over 20 years. She currently serves as a board member of the San Antonio branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, is Chairperson of the board of trustees of Canisius College, and is a member of the board of trustees of Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences.
American Express Appoints Former Amazon and Apple Exec for Software Product Management
American Express named Erich Ringewald as VP of Software Product Management for the U.S. Consumer Services business. Most recently, Ringewald served as CTO for Boku, a leading global mobile payments network that enables customers to purchase virtual goods using their mobile phone numbers. Prior to joining Boku, Ringewald was a General Manager and VP of Amazon.com. Earlier in his career, he co-founded Accept.com (acquired by Amazon.com), which pioneered person-to-person payments on the internet. He also co-founded Be, a computer company founded by former Apple Computer executives, and served as the CTO and VP of Engineering. Prior to that, he held various senior engineering management positions at Apple, including managing the Operating System Advanced Technology teams, the Macintosh Operating System team and the European Software Research and Development team.

Yahoo! has appointed John Hayes, 56, as a Director. Currently, Hayes serves as EVP & Chief Marketing Officer at American Express. Previously, he was the EVP of Global Advertising & Brand Management at American Express and the President of Lowe & Partners. Earlier in his career, Hayes was a director of the Association of National Advertisers and Wyndham Vacation Resorts.
American Express Appoints SVP of Technology
American Express announced that Neal Sample has joined the company as SVP of Technology. In this position, he will be responsible for Serve, the company’s digital commerce platform. Most recently, Sample served as the CTO of X.commerce, eBay's open development and commerce platform. Before joining X.commerce, he was the VP of Architecture & Platform Products at eBay. Prior to eBay, Sample served as the VP of Social, Open & Participation Platforms at Yahoo! While at Yahoo!, he also held the title of Chief Architect. Earlier in his career, he was the Chief Scientist at RightOrder and completed a post-doctoral research fellowship with the CIA’s Office of R&D.
