GE Board Nominates Former SEC Chair to Board

General Electric has nominated Mary Schapiro, 57, former chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), as a GE director. Prior to becoming SEC chairman, Schapiro served as CEO of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), president, vice-chair and chair of the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) Regulation. She served as a commissioner of the SEC before that, and left the SEC when appointed chairman of the CFTC.

RealD, a global licensor of 3D technologies, appointed Laura J. Alber, 42, to its Board of Directors. Laura is currently the President and CEO of Williams-Sonoma. Prior to her appointment as CEO, she served as President, Williams-Sonoma since 2006. In that role, she was responsible for leading the Pottery Barn brands and their retail stores, as well as the company's global supply chain, distribution, and worldwide logistics strategies, and expansion into the Middle East. In 2009, she added accountability and oversight of the West Elm brand. Sempra Energy named CEO Debra L. Reed, 56, as chairman of the company, succeeding Donald E. Felsinger, 65, who is retiring after a 40-year career with the company. Reed was named Sempra Energy's CEO last year. Reed has worked for the Sempra Energy companies for 34 years. Prior to her appointment as CEO last year, she was EVP of Sempra Energy. Previously, she served as president and CEO of Sempra Energy's two largest subsidiaries, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas). She also was chief operating officer of the two utilities, after initially being appointed president of SDG&E. Reed first joined the company in 1978 as an energy systems engineer at SoCalGas.

Exxon Mobil appointed Xerox’s Chair and CEO Ursula M. Burns, 54, to its Board of Directors. Ms. Burns was named president of Xerox and elected to the company's board in 2007. She was named CEO in 2009 and became chairman in 2010. She serves on the board of the American Express and provides leadership counsel to numerous community, educational and non-profit organizations including FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), National Academy Foundation, MIT and the U.S. Olympic Committee, among others. She is a founding board director of Change the Equation, which focuses on improving the U.S. education system in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). In 2010, she was appointed vice chair of the President's Export Council.
