eBay Gets New Directors to Board Before PayPal Split

eBay added two new independent directors to board in anticipation of completing its previously announced separation of eBay and PayPal. Tony Bates, 47, President of GoPro, and Gail McGovern, 62, President and CEO of the American Red Cross, have joined the board.

Current directors – Ford Motor Chairman William C. Ford, 57, and former publisher and CEO of the Los Angeles Times Richard T. Schlosberg, 69, who have served for 10 years and 11 years, respectively, do not plan to stand for re-election to the board.

Immediately prior to his role at GoPro, Bates — who has been in tech for 25 years — was an executive at Microsoft, where he had most recently been the EVP of business development and strategy. Bates came to Microsoft by way of its acquisition of Skype, where he took the role of CEO in 2010, one year before the company was acquired. Prior to Bates’ reign, Skype was owned by none other than eBay. Bates is firmly in the camp that supports the idea of separating eBay’s e-commerce marketplace from PayPal’s payments technology.
