Google Names Red Hat CTO as VP, Cloud Platforms

Brian Stevens, 50, who stepped down as EVP and CTO of Red Hat recently, has joined Google to lead its cloud platforms. Stevens had been with Red Hat since 2001. Stevens served as the CTO and VP of Engineering of JBoss, a division of Red Hat. Before joining the company, he had been the CTO at Mission Critical Linux, and a senior Architect at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), where he worked on Digital's UNIX operating system.

Oracle Appoints Former SAP Exec for Cloud Unit

Shawn Price, the former cloud business executive at SAP, has joined Oracle as SVP for product strategy and marketing, in the cloud unit. Before SAP, he served as President at SuccessFactors, Zuora, and as CEO, President and Chairman at Savvion.

VMware Exec Joins Salesforce as EVP, Market Readiness

Daniel Smoot has joined Salesforce as EVP for Market Readiness. He joins from VMware where he was VP for global customer operations. Prior to VMware, he spent 12 years with Cisco where his last responsibility was VP of global sales, marketing and operations for Cisco Capital. Smoot joined Cisco as Global Director of Western Enterprise Sales. In addition he spent nine years with Siemens (formerly IBM/ROLM) in various sales and sales leadership positions. 

Rackspace Names President as CEO and Director

Rackspace’s new CEO is Taylor Rhodes, the company’s president, who joined in 2007. He replaces Graham Weston, the company’s largest shareholder who stepped in following the unexpected departure of Lanham Napier earlier this year.

Rhodes retains his previous role as president. Previously, he was SVP and chief customer officer; SVP and managing director, international; and helped launch Rackspace Enterprise Services. Before that, Rhodes worked at EDS in a series of progressively more challenging leadership roles, managing end-to-end relationships with large global customers, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps as an infantry officer.

Riverbed Exec Leaves to Join Cloud Security Company as VP Support and Services

Scott Downie, who for nearly nine years ran Riverbed’s customer support operations as SVP Worlwide Support, has joined Illumio in a similar role, as VP Support and Services. Before Riverbed, he was VP Client Advocacy intransa, VP Customer Service at Luminous Networks, and Director, Product Support at Network Equipment Technologies.

Marketo Names EVP of Worldwide Field Operations

Marketo, the cloud-based marketing software platform provider, named Steve Winter as EVP of Worldwide Field Operations. He was most recently SAP’s global head of its Customer Line of Business Organization. Prior to SAP, Winter was a founding partner of Sagebrook Technology Partners, and spent 12 years at PeopleSoft, where he held various executive sales management roles, including VP and GM of the company's Midwest region.

Winter replaces Bill Binch, 43, who has led sales for six years. Binchwill remain at Marketo and take a key new role leading Marketo's expanding global sales activities for the small and medium business markets.

Hightail Gets Co-Founder as New CEO

Hightail, the cloud storage and file-sharing company formerly known as YouSendit, appointed its co-founder Ranjith Kumaran, as the new CEO, replacing Brad Garlinghouse. Most recently, Kumaran was CEO of consumer engagement platform PunchTab, another business he founded and built. Kumaran remains on the board of PunchTab. Aside from starting Hightail and PunchTab, he has held marketing positions at Verisity Design and built sales engineering teams for an algorithms-to-silicon company, Celoxica. He was also a software systems engineer at open-source software distributor, Red Hat.

Garlinghouse is the former Yahoo executive tapped two years ago to transform the company formerly known as YouSendit into the file-sharing company Hightail.

InterCloud Systems Taps Warren Resources' Exec as CFO

Cloud & managed services company InterCloud Systems hired Timothy A. Larkin, 51, as its new CFO. Most recently, Larkin served as EVP and CFO of Warren Resources in the oil and gas industry. Prior to joining Warren, Larkin served as a Manager in the Audit Department of Deloitte and Touche.

Dora Vell

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults, garage.ca, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
