Vell Compiles Open CIO Roles and Placements in the Past Month

Welcome to our monthly update on CIO & Other Tech Roles Turnover. This newsletter covers Tech function roles, including CIOs, CTOs, CISOs, and Head of Tech & Ops. This is for the month ending September 18th, 2014.

According to Liberum,  August's C-level changes declined 20% from a year earlier, and declined 26% from a month earlier. We believe that this, much like CEO Turnover, will be different once the September statistics come out. 

Top Industry sectors for overall C-Suite turnover in August, according to the same source, are: Drugs/Biotech, Energy and Banking.

Total Number of Open Roles: 27   

Newly Opened Roles: Nine - California Maritime Academy (CA), AmeriCares (CT), Bloomin’ Brands (FL),  Demandware (MA), Hancock Bank (MS), Estée Lauder (NY), Red Hat (NC), UPMC (PA), and ASOS Plc (U.K.)

New Appointments: 45

Sources of Appointments: 36 were External appointments (out of which one was a former employee), nine were internal promotions.

Diversity: five out of 45 are women - Isabella Bank (MI), New York City (NY), Crouse Hospital (NY), US White House (Washington, D.C.), and Marcus Corporation (WI).

Geographic Distribution: 43 in the US, and two International appointments.

July 2013 - Justin Rattner, Intel's CTO and director of the company's labs, is stepping down to meet a requirement in the company's bylaws that employees cannot serve as corporate officers after the age of 65. Intel Labs will report to Intel President Renée James until further decisions related to its leadership are made.

Violin Memory develops a new class of flash-based storage systems that are designed to bring storage performance in-line with high-speed applications, servers and networks.

December 2013 - Violin Memory software CTO Jonathan Goldrick has left the company, with no replacement announced.

Mitek is a mobile solutions provider engaged in the development, sale and service of its software solutions related to mobile imaging.

August 2014 - Mitek said CTO Michael Strange left his position effective Aug. 15 to pursue other opportunities. Mitek named Fritz Hesse as interim VP of engineering.

September 2014 - California Maritime Academy is seeking a CIO. Under general direction of the VP for Administration and Finance, the CIO would be responsible for providing efficient and effective IT support and services to the campus.

Bloomin’ Brands

September 2014 - Bloomin’ Brands is looking for a CISO. The CISO position provides leadership and oversight in the strategic planning, execution, and assessment of all company cyber security strategies, policies, procedures and guiding practices to be implemented at Bloomin’ Brands, Inc. (BBI).

November 2012 - Groupon is currently seeking a CIO, as Alan McIntosh has left the company.

United Stationers is a wholesale distributor of business products, including technology products, traditional office products, office furniture, janitorial and breakroom supplies, and industrial supplies.

August 2013 - S. David Bent, SVP of eBusiness Services and Corporate CIO, will be leaving United Stationers to pursue a new career opportunity. No replacements announced.


Lawson Products, Chicago, IL                                                                  Revenues: $290m
Lawson Products distributes products and services to the industrial, commercial, institutional, and governmental maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) marketplace.

November 2013 - Robert O. Border, SVP, CIO of Lawson Products notified the Company that he is leaving his current position effective December 1, 2013 to pursue a senior level position with another organization. No replacement has been announced yet.

City of New Orleans, New Orleans, LA                                                            Revenues: NA
New Orleans is a major United States port and the largest city and metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana.    

May 2014 - The city of New Orleans is looking for new CIO. The position was vacated by Allen Square, who served four years as the city’s CIO, inheriting a scandal-ridden department in which his two predecessors pled guilty to bribery charges. September 2014- Demandware is seeking a CIO who will be responsible for internal IT Applications and Technology Services strategy as well as corporate operations support. The CIO will provide scalable application vision and strategy focusing on the use of cloud technology to deliver strategic business initiatives in the areas of ERP (e.g., Intact and Aquilla), Financial planning (e.g., Adaptive Planning), CRM (e.g., Salesforce) and HRIS (e.g., ADP).

Hancock
Bank is the one of two subsidiaries of the Hancock Holding Company. Founded in 1899, Hancock Bank has grown over the years to become a major player in the Gulf South from Texas to central Florida.   

September 2014 - Hancock Bank is hiring a CISO, responsible for managing risks relating to information security, corporate security, vendor management, business continuity, crisis management, privacy, and technology compliance. 


New York

New York State, Albany, NY                                                                 Revenues: NA
New York is a state in the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States.

April 2014 – New York state is looking for a new CIO. The job is to lead the Office of Information and Technology Services (ITS), a relatively new agency with 3,800 employees and a budget of $915 million. The new CIO will replace Brian Digman, who took office in January 2013, two months after the formation of ITS.

August 2014 - Brian Stevens, 50, stepped down as EVP and CTO of Red Hat to join Google as VP, Cloud Platforms. In the interim, the office of the CTO will be managed by Paul Cormier, President of products and technologies at Red Hat.

September 2014 - CIO and EVP Dan Drawbaugh has decided to step down to pursue other professional interests. Ed McCallister, presently SVP, Enterprise Applications & Business Services, Information Services Division, will serve as interim CIO.

June 2013 - RadioShack Corporation announced that Ms. Sharon Stufflebeme, the Company's SVP and CIO, resigned to pursue other interests. Ms. Stufflebeme's duties will be temporarily assumed by various members of the Company's management while the Company commences a search for a replacement.


Neiman Marcus Group, Dallas, TX                                                              Revenues: Private
Neiman Marcus Group, through its subsidiary, the Neiman Marcus Group, operates as a luxury retailer in the United States. The company operates through two segments, Specialty Retail Stores and Online.
    
May 2014 - Neiman Marcus Group, the retailer that announced a data breach shortly after it was discovered more than 40 million credit cards had been compromised at Target, is on the hunt for its first chief information security officer.

Dell is a global IT company that offers its customers a range of solutions and services delivered directly by Dell and through other distribution channels.
    
August 2014 - Dell CIO Adriana “Andi” Karaboutis is leaving to join Biogen Idec as EVP of technology and business solutions, the biotechnology firm. Her last day at Dell is Sept. 5. Dell is “engaged in the process to identify her successor.”


Epicor, Austin, TX                                                                      Revenues: Private
Epicor provides ERP software and retail solutions, serving 20000 customers in over 150 countries.
    
August 2014 – Epicor is looking for a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), who will play an integral part in development of strategic policy, technology plans and investments.


Virginia

US Department of Defense, Arlington County, VA                              Revenues: NA
The Department of Defense (Defense Department, USDOD, DOD, DoD or the Pentagon) is the executive department of the government of the United States charged with coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government concerned directly with national security and the United States Armed Forces.

May 2014 - Deputy CIO David DeVries has assumed the role of acting CIO at the Defense Department. DeVries will stay on until the agency finds a permanent replacement for the post, which Teri Takai vacated.


Washington

Symetra Financial, Bellevue, WA                                                                   Revenues: $2.1b
Symetra Financial provides products and services that serve the retirement, employee benefits, and life insurance markets in the United States and the District of Columbia.

May 2014 - George N. McKinnon, SVP and CIO of Symetra Financial, will leave the company. Margaret A. Meister, Symetra EVP and CFO, will take over McKinnon’s responsibilities until he can be replaced, the company also said.


Washington D.C.

Defense Intelligence Agency, Washington D.C.                                              Revenues: NA
The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) is the main foreign military espionage organization of the United States, operating under the jurisdiction of Department of Defense (DoD).

August 2014 - Gus Taveras is stepping down as the Defense Intelligence Agency's CTO, with no replacement in place. The agency is also in search of a CIO to succeed Grant Schneider, a career employee who had held the job since 2007 and is on the way out the door.


United States Department of Energy, Washington D.C.                                         Revenues: NA

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) is a Cabinet-level department concerned with the United States' policies regarding energy and safety in handling nuclear material.

August 2014 - Robert Brese will leave his post at the Energy Department as CIO on Sept. 5, Federal News Radio reported. The station reports that deputy DOE CIO Dan Adcock will succeed Brese on an interim basis.


Other International

 Ziggo, Utrecht, Netherlands                                                                                      Revenues: NA
Ziggo is the largest cable operator in the Netherlands, providing cable television, broadband Internet, and telephone service. It has been taken over by Liberty Global Plc, the European cable company for about $7 billion.

July 2014 - Dutch operator Ziggo announced that Paul Hendriks, CTO at Ziggo will step down. Kamran Ziaee will be appointed as CIO on an interim basis.


ASOS Plc, London, U.K.                                                                                 Revenues: $ 769.4m
ASOS Plc is a
holding company. The principal activity of its subsidiary is Internet retailing.

September 2014 - The CIO of e-commerce giant Asos, Pete Marsden, has stepped down from his post after two years at the company.
A process to find Marsden's successor is underway, and that the firm is ruling out neither internal or external appointments.

Office Depot International Division: Former Sears CIO Keith Sherwell is joining Office Depot as CIO of its International Division.

Motorola Solutions: Greg Meyers joined as Corporate VP and CIO at Motorola Solutions, from Biogen Idec.

City of Boston: Jascha Franklin-Hodge as the City’s CIO in June 2014.

Relay Network: The company that connects brands with customers on a private, mobile communication network, has appointed Savana exec Graham Barry as its first CTO.

Spine Pain Management: David Spencer, an outside technology consultant working with the company's QVH subsidiary for several months, has now been appointed as CIO of the parent company.

Perception Software: Scott Harger will join the executive team as CTO and VP of engineering. Former Initiate Systems, acquired by IBM. 


Utah

Intermountain Healthcare: Sameer Badlani, MD, is leaving his position as CMIO of University of Chicago Medicine and Biological Sciences Division to join Intermountain Healthcare as chief health information officer. 


Vermont

National Life Group: Tom Anfuso is now SVP and CIO. Most recently as VP of enterprise and infrastructure systems at USAA.


Virginia

Straight Path Communications: Jerry Pi has been hired as CTO. Former Senior Director at Samsung Research America. 

The Roanoke County School Board: Manager of information systems Jeff Terry has been appointed as the district’s first CIO to lead the technology department. 

Spok Holdings: The global leader in critical communications named Quantum Retail Technology’s CTO/COO Kyle E. Gunderson as VP Development & CTO. 


Washington

Cray: Steve Scott is returning to the Cray CTO office, replacing outgoing Cray CTO William C. Blake.


Washington, D.C. 

United States of America: White House named Google’s Megan Smith the next CTO of the United States. Alexander Macgillivray, a former Twitter lawyer, is now deputy U.S. CTO. 

Federal Communications Commission (FCC): Scott Jordan has been appointed as CTO of FCC. Jordan is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine.


Wisconsin

Marcus Corporation: The Marcus Corporation promoted Marcus Theatres exec Kim Lueck to CIO. Lueck will also continue to serve as VP of technology for the Marcus Theatres division.


International

GE Healthcare: GE named Jörg F. Debatin, 52, as VP and CTO for GE Healthcare. Former CEO of Amedes AG. 

Gorkana Group: The leading provider of media intelligence services named Evening Standard exec Andrew Brown as CIO.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members.
