May Demand for CIOs Remains Strong Featured

Vell Compiles Open CIO Roles and Placements in the Past Month

Welcome to our monthly update on CIO/CTO Turnover. This newsletter covers Tech function roles that spans CIOs, CTOs, CISOs, and Head of Tech & Ops roles.

Some Stats for the Tech Execs Turnover for the thirty days ending May 21, 2014:

  • 19 new CIOs/CTOs were appointed
  • Diversity: One of the newly appointed executives is a  woman (Cancer Treatment Centers of America)
  • There are 32 open roles listed

Geographically, the appointments are as follows:

  • 15 in the U.S.
  • One in Canada and three major international

According to Liberum, there was 2% increase in year to year and 3% increase in month to month C-level changes in April.

Top Industry sectors for overall C-Suite turnover in April, according to the same source, are: Drugs/Biotech, Banking and Energy.

California

Intel Labs, Santa Clara, CA                                                                       Revenues: $53.34b
Intel Corporation designs and manufactures integrated digital technology platforms.

July 2013 - Justin Rattner, Intel's CTO and director of the company's labs, is stepping down to meet a requirement in the company's bylaws that employees cannot serve as corporate officers after the age of 65. Intel Labs will report to Intel President Renée James until further decisions related to its leadership are made.


Synaptics, San Jose, CA                                                                            Revenues: $663m
Synaptics is a developer and supplier of custom-designed human interface solutions that enable people to interact with a range of mobile computing, communications, entertainment, and other electronic devices.

November 2013 - Stanley A. Swearingen, Jr. resigned as CTO of the company. His successor is not yet named.


Cutera, Mountain View, CA                                                                        Revenues: $77.3m
Cutera, a medical device company, engages in the research, design, development of laser and other energy based aesthetics systems for practitioners worldwide.

September 2012 - Cutera announced the resignation of Leonard DeBenedictis, who is stepping down just 18 months after being named CTO of the Mountain View, Calif.-based aesthetic device maker. No replacement has been announced.


Axesstel, San Diego, CA                                                                            Revenues: $59.7m
Axesstel provides wireless voice, broadband access and connected home solutions for the worldwide telecommunications markets.

September 2013 - On September 4, 2013, Stephen Sek tendered his resignation as Chief Technology Officer, effective September 30, 2013. Mr. Sek is leaving to accept a position with a company he worked with prior to joining Axesstel, Inc. in 2006.


Violin Memory, Santa Clara, CA                                                                Revenues: $73.8m
Violin Memory develops a new class of flash-based storage systems that are designed to bring storage performance in-line with high-speed applications, servers and networks.

December 2013 - Violin Memory CTO Jonathan Goldrick has left the company, with no replacement announced.


LeapFrog Enterprises, Emeryville, CA                                                       Revenues: $581m
LeapFrog Enterprises developes educational entertainment for children.

December 2013 – LeapFrog is looking for a CTO, who will have global responsibility for the implementation of critical customer facing applications and infrastructure systems in the organization as well as web development, software engineering and customer facing software quality assurance.


Splunk, San Francisco, CA                                                                         Revenues: $198m
Splunk provides a software platform. Splunk’s software collects and indexes data regardless of format or source, and enables users to search, correlate, analyze, monitor and report on this data, all in real time.

November 2013 – The Splunk IT team is looking for a Chief Information Security Officer. The CISO develops and maintains enterprise security and risk policies, oversees vendor and technology risk management, and influences user behavior. The CISO will report to CIO.


ServiceNow, San Diego, CA                                                                       Revenues: $243.7m
ServiceNow is a provider of cloud-based services to automate enterprise IT operations.

January 2014 – Arne Josefsberg, CTO of ServiceNow, resigned from the Company to join GoDaddy. No Details on Interim or Replacement has been announced.


Colorado

Molycorp, Greenwood Village, CO                                                             Revenues: $528m
Molycorp provides Rare Earths and Molybdenum products to companies.

March 2013 - Molycorp’s EVP & CTO John Burba, PhD., 60, has resigned, with no replacements announced.


Georgia

SunGard, Alpharetta, GA                                                                          Revenues: NA
SunGard offers software and technology services worldwide.

December 2013 - SunGard is looking for iWorks CIO, with direct responsibility for all product initiatives across SunGard Insurance.


Illinois

Groupon, Chicago, IL                                                                                 Revenues: $2.33b
Groupon operates as a local commerce marketplace that connects merchants to consumers by offering goods and services at a discount in North America and internationally.

November 2012 - Groupon is currently seeking a CIO, as Alan McIntosh has left the company.


Horace Mann, Springfield, IL                                                                     Revenues: NA
Horace Mann is the largest, national multiline insurance company focusing on educators’ financial needs with more than $7 billion in assets. Horace Mann offers auto and homeowners insurance, retirement annuities, life insurance and other financial solutions to educators and their families.

May 2013 - Horace Mann is currently seeking a CIO to replace Mark Hansen, who recently left.


United Stationers, Deerfield, IL                                                                Revenues: $5.08b
United Stationers is a wholesale distributor of business products, including technology products, traditional office products, office furniture, janitorial and breakroom supplies, and industrial supplies.

August 2013 - S. David Bent, Senior Vice President of eBusiness Services and Corporate CIO, will be leaving United Stationers to pursue a new career opportunity. No replacements announced.


Federal Signal Corporation, Oak Brook, IL                                              Revenues: $803m
Federal Signal Corporation designs and manufactures a suite of products and integrated solutions for municipal, governmental, industrial and commercial customers.

July 2013 - Federal Signal Corporation announced that on July 18, 2013, Charles F. Avery, Jr. submitted to the Company his notice of his intention to resign as the CP, Corporate Controller and CIO, effective July 31, 2013. No replacements announced.


Lawson Products, Chicago, IL                                                                  Revenues: $290m
Lawson Products distributes products and services to the industrial, commercial, institutional, and governmental maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) marketplace.

November 2013 - Mr. Robert O. Border, SVP, CIO of Lawson Products notified the Company that he is leaving his current position effective December 1, 2013 to pursue a senior level position with another organization. No replacement has been announced yet.


Indiana

1st Source Bank, South Bend, IN                                                             Revenues: NA
Founded in 1863 in South Bend, Indiana, 1st Source bank remains the largest locally controlled financial institution headquartered in the northern Indiana-southwestern Michigan area.

September 2013 - 1st Source Bank seeks to recruit a CIO who will be responsible for providing vision and leadership in developing and implementing information technology initiatives and for managing the Information Technology Group.


Maryland

DomainMarket.com, Potomac, MD                                                            Revenues: Private
DomainMarket.com provides an online marketplace for domain names as well as revenue-sharing and brand development opportunities for individuals and corporations.   

February 2013 - Chad Bennett, who  served as President and Chief Technical Officer at Michael Mann's aftermarket sales venue, DomainMarket.com, for the past 10 months has stepped down from that position.


Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, Hampstead, MD                                                    Revenues: $1.04b
Jos. A. Bank Clothiers is a designer, manufacturer, retailer and direct marketer (through stores, catalog call center and Internet) of men’s tailored and casual clothing and accessories and is a retailer of tuxedo rental products.  

June 2013 - Jos. A. Bank Clothiers is currently seeking a Chief Technology Officer.


Food & Drug Administration, Silver Spring, MD                                         Revenues: NA
Department of Health & Human Services, Food & Drug Administration. The FDA is a Federal scientific law enforcement agency with the legislated responsibility for ensuring that drugs, biological products and medical devices are safe and effective, that food and drugs are adequately packaged and informatively labeled and that radiation emitting devices are safe, and to prevent and reduce tobacco use.  

September 2013- Food & Drug Administration office is looking for a CIO.


Massachusetts

City of Boston, Boston, MA                                                                      Revenues: NA
Boston is the capital and largest city of the state of Massachusetts.   

March 2014 - Under the leadership of Mayor Martin J. Walsh, the City of Boston seeks a technology leader with a strong concern for and awareness of urban issues, who, as CIO, will build the infrastructure, tools, and team that deliver against this vision. Justin C. Holmes is the interim CIO appointed in January 2014.


Minnesota

Target, Minneapolis, MN                                                                           Revenues: $72.6b
The Target Corporation is an American retailing company, founded in 1902 and headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is the second-largest discount retailer in the United States.

March 2014 – The company has created the position of CISO and is hiring outside for that position.


New Jersey

Hill International, Marlton, NJ                                                                   Revenues: $417m
Hill International is a worldwide construction consulting firm headquartered in Marlton, NJ.

November 2013 – The company is seeking an experienced CIO.


New York

Adecco Group North America, Melville, NY                                                Revenues: NA
Adecco Group North America is the nation’s leading provider of recruitment and workforce solutions. We are the pre-eminent workforce management partner for Fortune 500 companies and career advisement expert for American workers, serving all of the key industries and professions that drive our economy forward.

June 2013 – Adecco’s CIO, Information Technology, Bryan Ackermann, has joined Korn/Ferry as CIO. Adecco hasn’t announced any replacement yet.


North American Breweries, Rochester, NY                                               Revenues: NA
North American Breweries (NAB) is the national platform for investments and growth in the beer and malt beverages industries for KPS Capital Partners, LP. NAB acquired Genesee Brewing Company, Labatt USA and a perpetual license for Seagram's Escapes from Pernod Ricard USA, LLC in 2009. The combination created the largest independently-owned beer company in the U.S.

July 2013 – The company is looking for a CIO, who will be responsible for managing the company’s IT organization in order to maintain and enhance the systems that enable business performance. 


New York State, Albany, NY                                                                 Revenues: NA
New York is a state in the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States.

April 2014 – New York state is looking for a new CIO. The job is to lead the Office of Information and Technology Services (ITS), a relatively new agency with 3,800 employees and a budget of $915 million. The new CIO will replace Brian Digman, who took office in January 2013, two months after the formation of ITS.


Pennsylvania

MedAmerica, Pittsburgh, PA                                                                       Revenues: NA
MedAmerica is a nationally recognized medical practice support and consulting company that provides innovative products and services to support emergency, primary and hospital-based care in today's complex environment.

January 2014 - MedAmerica is hiring: CIO, responsible for the strategic planning and execution of the IT vision, goals, and initiatives that support the long term objectives and mission of MedAmerica and CEP America.


Texas

RadioShack Corporation, Fort Worth, TX                                                   Revenues: $4.25b
RadioShack Corporation (RadioShack) is engaged in the retail sale of consumer electronics goods and services through its RadioShack store chain.

June 2013 - RadioShack Corporation announced that Ms. Sharon Stufflebeme, the Company's Senior Vice President and CIO, resigned to pursue other interests. Ms. Stufflebeme's duties will be temporarily assumed by various members of the Company's management while the Company commences a search for a replacement.


Virginia

US Department of Defense, Arlington County, VA                              Revenues: NA
The Department of Defense (Defense Department, USDOD, DOD, DoD or the Pentagon) is the executive department of the government of the United States charged with coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government concerned directly with national security and the United States Armed Forces.

May 2014 - Deputy CIO David DeVries has assumed the role of acting CIO at the Defense Department. DeVries will stay on until the agency finds a permanent replacement for the post, which Teri Takai vacated.


Washington, D.C.

American Wind Energy Association, Washington, DC                              Revenues: NA
American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) is a national trade association formed in 1974 and representing wind power project developers, equipment suppliers, and others involved in the wind industry.

March 2013 - AWEA is currently seeking a CIO, as Thad Lurie has left the post.


United States Department of Commerce, Washington, DC                              Revenues: NA
DOC is the Cabinet department of the United States government concerned with promoting economic growth.

February 2014 - After seven years as an agency CIO — first at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and then at the Commerce Department — Simon Szykman is leaving his post. The department hopes to have named a new CIO before Szykman exits. However, if he leaves before then, it is uncertain who of the two deputy CIOs, Kirit Amin and Izella Dornell, will serve as acting CIO.


United States Department of Interior, Washington, DC                                      Revenues: NA
The United States Department of the Interior (DOI) is responsible for the management and conservation of most federal land and natural resources, and the administration of programs relating to American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, territorial affairs, and insular areas of the U.S.

April 2014 - Interior Department CIO Bernie Mazer is retiring and transitioning out of his role.  Sylvia Burns took over the reins as Interior Department’s acting CIO.

Deutsche Boerse, Eschborn, Germany                                                      Revenues: NA
Deutsche Boerse AG is a Germany-based international financial marketplace operator. It operates four business segments: Xetra; Eurex; Clearstream, and Market Data & Analytics.

October 2013 - Deutsche Borse CTO and Clearstream CIO, Yves Baguet, leaves. His CIO responsibilities will be taken over by Richard Green, who is currently running one of Clearstream's application development departments. Green will also take over the CTO role on an interim basis.

  • PetSmart: Hallmark CIO of of Technology and Business Enablement Michael Goodwin joins PetSmart as SVP & CIO.

California

  • Intuit: Intuit has hired "Nat" Rajesh Natarajan to be the CTO and VP of product management and development for Intuit TurboTax.
  • Mozilla: Mozilla appoints VP of Mobile Engineering Andreas Gal as new CTO.
  • Santa Clara University: Western Kentucky University’s VP, IT Robert C. Owen has been named CIO and vice provost for technology and information services.
  • Agilent Technologies: Insider Jay Alexander has been named Agilent’s electronic measurement business Keysight Technologies' CTO.

Delaware

  • InterDigital: InterDigital appoints Dr. Byung K. Yi as CTO and head of InterDigital Labs, from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Indiana

  • First Merchants Corporation: CTO Stephan H. Fluhler, 45, is now SVP and CIO.

Illinois

  • Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA): Tenet Healthcare exec Kristin Darby appointed CIO.




Massachusetts

  • Rocket Software: Former iRobot CIO Jay Leader has joined the company as SVP and CIO.

Michigan

  • CMS Energy: Pacific Gas and Electric Co. tech exec Brian Rich joins as CIO.

Minnesota

  • Target: Former First Data EVP, Global Ops and Technology Bob DeRodes joined Target as EVP and CIO.

North Carolina

  • Lowe's: SVP U.S. home improvement and SVP IT infrastucture & operations Paul Ramsay has been named CIO at Lowe's.
  • INC Research: The global Phase I to IV clinical research organization, promoted VP, IT Ops Jonathan Shough to CIO.

Pennsylvania

  • Rite Aid: SBP & CIO Matt Lynch joins from Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Texas

  • EZCORP: Bass Pro Shops CIO Bill Wood joins EZCORP as CIO.

  • WestJet Airlines: EVP & CIO Rocky Wiggins joins WestJet from Minnesota-based Sun Country Airlines.



International

  • Barclays Plc: Barclays has appointed Commonwealth Bank of Australia’s CIO Michael Harte as Chief Operations and Technology Officer.
  • Deutsche Bank: Goldman Sachs exec Michael Grimaldi will join as CIO for its Corporate Banking & Securities and Global Transaction Banking business divisions.
  • QBE: Austrlia based Insurer QBE has appointed Malc Simpkin, formerly of Aviva, as CIO.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.
