Yahoo! Creative Innovation Center Head and Key Ad Tech Exec Leaves; Company Loses New Top Data Scientist to eBay
Well-known Israeli entrepreneur Eran Shir, whose Dapper startup was bought by Yahoo in 2010, is leaving the company to join new venture firm Aleph as an entrepreneur in residence. Shir has been a key ad tech exec at Yahoo since the Dapper acquisition, including working on its most recent efforts in transforming its ad tech by focusing on dynamic, personalized and native ad products.
Tim Converse, one of Yahoo’s high-ranking data scientists, who arrived at the company early this year via an acquisition, has been hired away by eBay. He will lead its search-science engineering team. Converse is co-founder of Jybe, a mobile app for recommendation and social discovery that Yahoo bought earlier this year.
Groupon Adds to Board and Senior Leadership Team
Groupon appoints Jeffrey Housenbold, president and CEO of Shutterfly, to the company's Board. Housenbold has served as President, CEO and a director of Shutterfly since 2005. Prior to that, he worked at eBay, serving in a variety of senior roles, most recently as VP of Business Development and Internet Marketing.
Brian McCallister joined Groupon as CTO of Platform. McCallister comes to Groupon from Ning, where he was Principal Architect and Distinguished Engineer.
Stephen Deasy joined as the VP of Infrastructure and Data Platform at Groupon. Deasy joins from VMware, where he was Senior Director of R&D for VMware's Mobile Platform and Clients team. Prior to VMware, Deasy held several senior roles at EMC, including IT Director and Senior Software Developer.
Pete Webb joined Groupon as VP Global Production Operations. Before Groupon, Webb was at Flipboard, where he was Head of Operations.
Zynga’s New COO is Former EA Exec
Zynga has appointed Clive Downie, 41, as COO. He joins Zynga from DeNA, a global leader in mobile social gaming services, where he most recently served as CEO of DeNA West, the company's American and European division. Prior to that, Downie was VP of Studios, managing DeNA's internal studios in North America and Europe, and the VP of Marketing and Revenue at ngmoco, a mobile game company acquired by DeNA in 2010. Before joining ngmoco, Downie spent more than 15 years at Electronic Arts where he served as VP of Marketing.
Shutterfly Appoints Long Timer as COO
Social expression and personal publishing service company Shutterfly promoted SVP & GM Dan McCormick to SVP & COO. McCormick has also served as SVP and GM of products and services, VP and GM of products and services, and VP of strategy and corporate development at the company. Prior to Shutterfly, he was director of product marketing at Network Appliance and served media, entertainment and retail clients as a senior consultant in the Strategic Services Group at Accenture.
Trulia Appoints KAYAK CEO to Board
Online residential real estate site Trulia appointed Steve Hafner, Co-Founder and CEO at KAYAK, to Board. During the past ten years at KAYAK, Steve led the company through a very successful IPO and then a $2.1B acquisition by The Priceline Group. Prior to founding and serving as CEO at KAYAK, Steve was the EVP of Consumer Travel at Orbitz and before that he was a project leader at the Boston Consulting Group.
Microsoft Names Top Skype Leader
Microsoft has named Gurdeep Singh Pall to replace the departing Mark Gillett as corporate VP for Skype, as well as its Lync communications product. Gillett, who took a job as head of value creation at private equity firm Silver Lake, had been responsible for Skype’s product, engineering and operations worldwide, duties that will now fall to Pall. An experienced engineer, Pall was most recently CVP of Information Platform & Experience in Microsoft’s new Applications and Services division. Before that, he was CVP of the Office Lync & Speech group.
Pinterest Hires Away San Francisco Chronicle President
Pinboard-style photo-sharing website Pinterest hired San Francisco Chronicle and SFGate President Joanne Bradford to lead Advertiser and Media Partnerships. Bradford oversaw The Chronicle's digital and marketing efforts, and she will maintain a role as an adviser to the newspaper in those areas, and will also work closely with The Chronicle's parent company, Hearst, on developing strategic partnerships between the two companies. Prior to her work at The Chronicle, Bradford held leadership positions at Yahoo, Microsoft's MSN Media Network and Demand Media.
