Ankit Jain left his position as head of Search and Discovery for the Google Play Web store. Prior to his time leading search for Google Play, Jain was a senior software engineer at Cuil, a search-engine start-up that was shuttered in 2010 after Google acquired the core members of the company’s team, including Jain.
Nokia's Developer Relations Chief Joins Amazon Web Services
Marco Argenti, SVP at Nokia who was heading the Developer and Marketplace experience is now leaving the company for an unspecified job with Amazon's Web services unit. Marco Argenti is a consumer technology industry veteran with over 25 years of experience. He spearheaded Nokia’s developer experience including Lumia device leading to many exclusive apps and bringing in more app developers to the Windows Phone platform.
Facebook Names Former Motorola and Google Exec as First CMO
Facebook named Gary Briggs as its first CMO. Briggs replaces VP of product marketing Eric Antonow, who has led Facebook’s marketing efforts since 2010. Prior to joining Facebook, Briggs served as an advisor to the CEO of Motorola Mobility, a subsidiary of Google. After Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility, Briggs served as SVP, overseeing all aspects of product and regional marketing, consumer research, communications, eCommerce and the Motorola Mobility brand and advertising. Previously he was Google’s VP of Consumer Marketing. Briggs has held previous roles with eBay, Pepsi and IBM.
Yahoo! Appoints Interim Chair and Former eBay COO as Permanent Board Chairman; Names Other Senior Leaders
Yahoo! has named its interim chair Maynard Webb Jr, 58, as new chairman of its board of directors. Webb has been a member of the Yahoo board since early 2012, and was appointed interim chairman earlier this year, replacing outgoing chairman Fred Amoroso. Webb is a veteran of the tech industry, having served as the former CEO of LiveOps, a provider of cloud contact center services, a position he held from 2006 to 2011. Prior to that, he also served as president of technology, and then COO, of eBay from 1999 to 2006. Earlier in his career, Webb also served as the CIO of Gateway.
Andre Christensen will be Yahoo’s new SVP of strategy and business operations. Previous to his new Yahoo position, Christensen spent more than 12 years at McKinsey, heading the Business Technology Practice in Canada and global-sourcing service line. Prior to joining McKinsey, he worked for Capgemini as a project manager focusing on system integration and outsourcing and off-shoring for the telecom and financial sectors.
Yahoo also appointed Dawn Airey as SVP of EMEA operations. Christophe Parcot, who has served as Yahoo!'s interim lead of EMEA, will take on a new role with Yahoo! focused on expanding its business in the region. Airey has worked in television for 30 years and has held senior positions in the majority of the commercial broadcasters in the UK. Most recently, she was President of a unit of RTL Group. She joined in 2010 from the Broadcaster Five where, as Chairman and CEO, she oversaw all operations. Previously she was Managing Director of Global Content at ITV where she oversaw its UK and International production and content businesses. Prior to that, she was Managing Director, Channels & Services, at BSkyB. She has also held senior posts at Channel 4.
Former Google exec Bernardo Hernández González, has joined Yahoo to lead its Flickr photo-sharing unit. González most recently ran Zagat property at Google. González, a Spanish entrepreneur, has strong online product skills. He has been an active investor and founder of many Internet companies in Spain, including StepOne, Idealista.com, FloresFrescas.com and 11870.com.
Groupon Names Co-Founder as Permanent CEO
Daily-deals company Groupon named co-founder Eric Lefkofsky, 43, as permanent CEO. Lefkofsky, who is Groupon's largest shareholder, replaces Andrew Mason, who was left earlier this year. He is co-founder of Lightbank, founder & director of InnerWorkings, Echo Global Logistics, Mediaocean and Groupon.
E*TRADE Appoints Seasoned Banking and Securities Industries Exec to Board
E*TRADE Financial Corporation appointed Richard J. Carbone, 64, to the Company's Board of Directors. Carbone is EVP at Prudential Financial. He served as EVP and CFO of Prudential for 16 years before retiring from that position this year. Carbone has held senior finance office positions in both the banking and securities industries, including Managing Director and Controller of Salomon Brothers and SVP and Controller of Bankers Trust Company. He began his career at Price Waterhouse. He was an officer in the United States Marine Corps from 1969 to 1972, serving as a platoon commander in Vietnam.
AOL Hires Key Strategy Exec Whereas HR Head Leaves
Luke Beatty joins AOL as its head of strategic partnerships. He is the creator of crowd-sourcing content platform Associated Content and later sold it to Yahoo. Most recently, Beatty was managing director at Techstars, a start-up accelerator. Before that, he was a VP at Yahoo joining in 2010, where he ran the business for the consumer properties group.
In connection with the decentralization of the human resources function, John Reid-Dodick, EVP and Chief People Officer of AOL, is leaving to pursue other opportunities. Following the Thomson acquisition of Reuters in 2008, Reid-Dodick led the people and culture integration of Reuters and Thomson Financial. Previously, he held a range of senior HR roles at Reuters in New York and London. A lawyer by training, Reid-Dodick joined Reuters in 1995, serving as General Counsel for Reuters America. Prior to Reuters, he was an associate with Sullivan & Cromwell for five years, and a law clerk for the Honorable Robert W. Sweet of the Southern District of New York.
Zynga Shakes Up Top Management
Zynga has announced a management reshuffle that will see COO David Ko, CTO Cadir Lee and Chief People Officer Colleen McCreary leave the games developer. The new management includes Nick Tornow as CTO, Dorion Carroll as CIO and Adam Sussman as SVP Game Publishing (which includes distribution, direct advertising sales and ops). Meg Makalou will serve as VP Human Resources. The company will also have several studio leaders to manage specific products and complete the executive team.
Zynga announced that two executives, Steve Chiang, previously president of Zynga's Games division, and Barry Cottle, previously the company's Chief Revenue Officer, have transitioned to managing certain game teams and operations, and therefore they are no longer holding their former posts, and now have the titles of EVP of Games for most of Zynga’s ’Ville titles and EVP of Games for Social Casino titles, respectively.
SVP-Games John Osvald, VP-Games Nathan Etter and VP-Social casino division Jesse Janosov, also have had a collective exit. Osvald and Etter joined Zynga in 2009, when the company was growing rapidly and the popularity of games such as FarmVille was rising. They both helped lead the group that produced FarmVille. Janosov led casino games, such as Zynga Poker and Zynga Elite Slots, in which users gamble virtual money.
Twitter Hires Former Ticketmaster CEO as First Head of Commerce; Head of Music Leaves
Twitter named Nathan Hubbard, 37, as its first Head of Commerce. Hubbard recently left Ticketmaster, where he acted as CEO since the 2010 merger with Live Nation. Hubbard has been the CEO of Ticketing Unit at Live Nation Entertainment, and it’s President of Ticketmaster before that. Hubbard came to Live Nation in 2006 through the purchase of Musictoday, where he served as the CEO.
Tatiana Simonian, Twitter’s head of music for the past two years, has left. She joins Nielsen, one of Twitter’s important media partners, for the newly created role of VP of Client Solutions with the entertainment group, working with brands in the music vertical. Prior to Twitter, Simonian worked in media relations for Disney and was a former freelance journalist.
Path Appoints Salesforce Engineering VP
Path, the private social network for mobile devices, has named Kallol Das its new vice president of engineering. Das was most recently VP of software engineering at Salesforce, where he led the team working on the company’s Service Cloud product line for the past six years. Before that, Das was a software development manager at Amazon, where he worked on the AmazonFresh engineering team.
Zillow Appoints COO
Online real estate database firm Zillow named Kathleen Philips, who has served as general counsel since joining the company in 2010, as COO. Philips played an instrumental role in the company's 2011 IPO, and oversees the company's M&A activities, including six acquisitions in less than two years. Prior to joining Zillow, Philips was general counsel at FanSnap, a venture capital-backed ticket search engine, general counsel of Pure Digital Technologies, the maker of Flip Video cameras acquired by Cisco in 2009, general counsel for StubHub, the online ticket marketplace acquired by eBay in 2007, general counsel at Hotwire.com, where she led the company's legal responsibilities through its 2003 acquisition by InterActiveCorp.
