Microsoft Appoints a CTO for Server & Tools
Microsoft appointed a CTO for its Server & Tools business. Dave Campbell, a Microsoft Technical Fellow, now has that title. Replacing Campbell in his SQL-focused developmental role is a former SAP EVP T.K. Rengarajan, who is now a Corporate VP at Microsoft. Rengarajan's most recent title at SAP was EVP of Intellectual Renewal. But, like Campbell, Rengarajan's roots go back to Digital Equipment Corp. and its Rdb database team.
J.P. Morgan Chase CIO Leaves
J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. CIO Guy Chiarello is leaving the company. The bank’s global CIO since 2008, Chiarello was responsible for a number of key technology initiatives, from consolidating information systems from several acquired banks—including Bear Stearns— to developing new generations of automated teller machines and kiosks used to automate a greater number of customer transactions. Prior, Chiarello served as Managing Director of Morgan Stanley, its CTO, CIO overseeing all IT activities, including over 6,000 application development resources globally.
Comcast Promotes Tech Exec
Comcast announced that Slade Mitchell has been promoted to VP of Architecture for Technology and Product. Former HP Labs Head Joins Accenture
Prith Banerjee, the former head of HP Labs, the research and development organization of technology giant Hewlett-Packard, has joined the technology consulting firm Accenture. Banerjee’s title will be managing director of Global Technology Research & Development within its Technology Growth Platform unit. In the new job, Banerjee will oversee Accenture Technology Labs, the firm’s research organization that focuses on emerging tech, and will be responsible for its annual Technology Vision research. Banerjee ran HP Labs for about five years until a 2012 management shake-up. He then joined the Swiss industrial tech firm ABB as its CTO, but left that job earlier this year.
New CIO Named at Las Vegas Sands
Casino and resort operating company Las Vegas Sands named Les Ottolenghi as SVP and CIO. He will be responsible for overseeing the company's technology innovation strategies and infrastructure delivery on a global basis. Since 2004, Ottolenghi has successfully co-founded three technology companies after leading technology in CIO roles at Agentware from 1999 to 2003 and Carlson Wagonlit Travel from 1996 to 1998. His early experiences in innovating and deploying technology at Carlson Wagonlit Travel and Holiday Inn Worldwide were at the forefront of the hospitality industries growth via web-based reservations systems and tools.
Marathon Oil CIO to Retire; New CIO Named
Thomas K. Sneed, VP and CIO for Marathon Oil Corporation will retire, following more than 32 years of service. Bruce A. McCullough will succeed Sneed as VP and CIO. McCullough joins Marathon Oil from Anadarko Petroleum where he most recently served as director, Global Business Systems. Sneed will serve as VP of IT Services to facilitate an orderly transition to the department's new leadership. Prior to Anadarko, McCullough was a partner at Accenture and served in a variety of capacities for clients such as Atlantic Richfield Company, Mitchell Energy and Development Corporation and Burlington Resources.
Aegon appoints Global CTO
Insurance company Aegon named Aegon Americas COO Brenda Clancy to the new role of Global CTO. Clancy will develop and lead Aegon's Group-wide global IT governance framework and enterprise IT strategy. Clancy will step down as COO of Aegon Americas, a role she has held since 2005; she will remain a member of the Aegon Americas Management Board as well as the Group's Management Committee.
Groupon Exec to lead e-commerce for Staples
Former Groupon VP and general manager, Faisal Masud took on the position of EVP of global e-commerce for Staples. He succeeds David Ching, who retired from the role earlier this year after 19 years with the company. As CIO, Libenson will oversee Safeway's extensive IT business functions. During his tenure with Land O' Lakes, Libenson and his team transformed the technology group to ensure that IT was fully aligned and executing against that company's long-term strategic direction. Prior to that, he was VP and CIO at Ingersoll Rand, where he joined as VP of e-Business. Windstream Appoints CTO from XO Communications
Provider of advanced communications and technology solutions Windstream has named Randy Nicklas as EVP of engineering and CTO. Nicklas was formerly CTO and SVP of engineering for XO Communications, where he was responsible for the overall network technology vision for the company's voice, data, and transport networks. Prior to joining XO Communications, Nicklas held engineering and technical management positions at Intelsat, Cisco and MCI. KAR Auction Services Appoints Seasoned Online Technology Platform Exec as CTO
Vehicle auction services company KAR Auction Services announced the promotion of Peter Kelly to the position of CTO. Kelly most recently served as president and CEO of OPENLANE, which KAR acquired in late 2011. AOL's Patch Unit Sees CTO Replacement
AOL's local news network of sites, Patch, witnessed its leader, CTO Rob Platzer, leaving the company. He joined Patch three years ago when AOL bought his prior employer, Outside.in. Prior to Outside.in, Rob was the Director of Application Development at Digital Railroad where he spent the majority of his 'hands on' time innovating in the area of image search while leading the development team to build and maintain an online archival, sales and marketing platform for professional photographers. Rob has previously led application development at HUGE and Intrasphere where he was responsible for the strategic direction of technology for clients such as iVillage/NBC, Pfizer and Scholastic. Brocade Appoints Routing, Application Delivery and Software Exec as CTO
Ken Cheng will take on the role of CTO and VP of Corporate Development at networking equipment company Brocade Communications going forward, replacing Dave Stevens. Cheng was VP of routing, application delivery and software networking group at Brocade, responsible for the overall vision, strategy, and execution of the routing, application delivery and software businesses. He joined Brocade in 2008, through the company's acquisition of Foundry Networks. During his 12-year tenure at Foundry, he held a variety of executive management positions. Prior to that, he served as COO and VP of engineering for DG Systems (now DG FastChannel), a content distribution network company that operates large network for media distribution. Cheng also held senior engineering management positions at Network Equipment Technologies (NET) and Bell Northern Research (later Nortel Labs).

Progress Software Appoints New CTO
Progress Software named Karen Tegan Padir as CTO. Padir, a Progress SVP and 20-year software industry veteran will be responsible for defining and delivering the company's technology strategy, innovation and vision. Padir joined Progress Software in 2012 as SVP and business line executive for application development, the company's largest product line. Under her leadership, the Progress OpenEdge development platform was revitalized and major new versions incorporating advanced mobile and business rules capabilities introduced.
