Allscripts Changes CEOs; President and Senior HR Personnel Step Down

Allscripts named its board member Paul M. Black, 52, as new President and CEO, replacing longtime CEO Glen Tullman, 54. Black was appointed to the Allscripts’ board earlier this year. Black most recently served as Operating Executive of Genstar Capital, a private equity firm, and Senior Advisor at New Mountain Finance Corporation, an investment management company. Previously, he spent more than 12 years with Cerner in various executive positions, retiring as COO in 2007. Prior to Cerner, Black spent 12 years at IBM in a number of senior sales, marketing and professional services leadership positions.

Tullman, who led Allscripts for 15 years, stepped down from his position as CEO and from his board seat. Prior to joining Allscripts, he was CEO of Enterprise Systems, a leading healthcare-information services company providing resource-management solutions to large, integrated healthcare networks. Before that, he served in a number of management roles, including president and COO of CCC Information Services, a provider of information systems to the property and casualty insurers.

Lee Shapiro, 56, the company's president, is also stepping down but will serve the CEO as a consultant for up to six months. He joined Allscripts in 2000 and has served as the company’s COO, and has directed Allscripts M&A activities, including the acquisition of Channelhealth, Advanced Imaging Concepts and RxCentric, as well as Allscripts strategic relationships, such as those with Microsoft, HP, and IDX.

Diane Adams, 52, EVP of Culture and Talent, will be leaving Allscripts. Adams joined Allscripts in 2009. She held the position of VP, HR for Cisco and led human resources for the Cisco sales organization on a global basis and for each of Cisco’s theatres (US & Canada, Japan, Europe, Emerging, and Asia Pacific). Prior to joining Cisco in 1995, she served in a number of leadership roles within Nortel and also founded and operated a consulting business focused on organization and leadership development.

Alere Appoints J&J Long Timer as COO

Health management solutions company Alere appointed Namal Nawana, 42, as its new COO. He comes to Alere from Johnson & Johnson, where he has spent 15 years in various leadership roles, spanning the fields of engineering, marketing, sales and general management, including in Canada, Europe, US and the Asia Pacific region. Most recently, he served as the Worldwide President of DePuy Synthes Spine, a Johnson & Johnson company, responsible for, among other things, managing all operations globally. Prior to that, he was Area VP for Johnson & Johnson Medical's operations in Australia and New Zealand, Chairman of the DePuy Asia Pacific Franchise Council, General Manager for DePuy Australia and General Manager for Depuy Canada.

OCHIN Hires Team of Medical Professionals to Drive Vision for Clinician Innovation

OCHIN, Oregon's health IT extension centre, named Dr. Scott Fields as Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Fields is a nationally recognized family physician and currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). His work on the OHSU Ambulatory Epic EHR installation and his data expertise are strengths that directly complement the current needs of Oregon providers.

Tim Burdick, MD is currently the Interim Director of Medical Informatics with the University of Vermont's Fletcher Allen Health Care – Vermont's only tertiary-care academic medical center. He will join OCHIN as the Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO). He will also practice medicine at OHSU.

PatientSafe Solutions Announces Key Management Appointments to Drive Company’s Vision, Operations and Sales

PatientSafe Solutions, a leader in smart point-of-care mobile solutions, hired industry veterans Frank Pecaitis to SVP of Sales and Bruce Eklund SVP of Operations, respectively.

Frank Pecaitis joins PatientSafe Solutions from GE Healthcare, where he served as an executive level sales leader for the $1.3 billion IT solutions segment. Previously Pecaitis held executive level sales and marketing roles at Medsphere Systems, a leading commercial provider of open source-based electronic health record (EHR) systems and services, and QuadraMed, where he was instrumental in growing market share and building a national reputation for its flagship products.

Bruce Eklund joins PatientSafe Solutions from AHM, a professional organization supporting operations for 17 of the top 25 pharmaceutical companies in the world, where he served as SVP of global service delivery and operations. Previously Eklund managed various operations for global healthcare leaders including Care Fusion, CardinalHealth, and Cerner.

Health Dialog Appoints BD Exec as New Chief

Health Dialog appointed Robert Mandel, MD, MBA as the new company CEO. Mandel will take the reins from James Tugendhat, Health Dialog’s current CEO, who will be based in London and lead the creation and delivery of Bupa’s global healthcare partnership strategy. Dr. Mandel joined Health Dialog in 2011 as EVP for Market and Business Development, leading the company through a major strategic reorganization late last year. His in-depth knowledge and understanding of the healthcare industry led to innovations in the company’s service delivery model, expanding Total Population Health management solutions to new markets. Prior to joining Health Dialog, he served as the SVP of Health Care Services at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee. Earlier, he held the role of VP of Health Care Services at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.

SSI Announces New SVP of Sales and Chief Strategy Officer 

The SSI Group named Brian Campbell and Tom Myers as SVP of Sales and Chief Strategy Officer respectively. Both Campbell and Myers will maintain their executive roles with MedWorth, a wholly-owned SSI subsidiary. Campbell currently serves as the Director of Business Development for MedWorth and Myers serves as the company's VP and COO.

Campbell joined MedWorth in 2011 with more than 10 years of experience in operations and corporate sales and marketing within the healthcare industry. He previously held senior sales and leadership positions with Bristol-Myers Squibb, Biogen Idec and GlaxoSmithKline. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Victory Health Partners and the Arthritis Foundation, Gulf Coast Chapter in Mobile, Ala.

Prior to joining MedWorth in 2008, Myers worked at IBM's Business Consulting Services practice. There, he specialized in strategy consulting across a wide variety of industries including healthcare, consumer electronics, IT products and services, telecommunications and facilities services. Myers holds two patents in telecommunications system design.

AHIMA Board Elects President

Dr. Angela Kennedy, professor and chair of the Health Informatics and Information Management program at Louisiana Tech University, was recently elected to serve as President of the American Health Information Management Association’s (AHIMA) Board of Directors, beginning in 2013. AHIMA provides medical records professionals with educational resources and programs. Kennedy has previously served on the AHIMA Board in 2007, chaired the association’s business and audit team. Kennedy has served two terms as president of the Louisiana Health Information Management Association (LHIMA).  She most recently served as Board Chairman for the Commission on Health Informatics and Information Management. She has also served as president for the Louisiana Health Information Systems Society (LAHIMSS).

Premier Healthcare Alliance Names Former McKesson Exec as Chief Sales Officer

The Premier healthcare alliance has named Gary S. Long its new chief sales officer. As chief sales officer, Long will lead Premier’s sales and sales support teams in positioning the company’s integrated service offerings. This includes the differentiated value Premier offers providers with comprehensive solutions in supply chain, healthcare informatics and population health management, among other vital areas. Long most recently served as the SVP of sales and support for Surgical Information Systems, and has served in senior leadership roles at McKesson, Dornier Medical Systems and other organizations in sales, marketing and operations.

Constant Contact and Saba Exec Joins Cloud-Based Health IT Company as CTO

CareCloud, a leading provider of cloud-based practice management, electronic healthcare record (EHR), revenue cycle management and medical billing software and services, hired John J. Walsh as its new CTO. Prior to joining CareCloud, he served as SVP, Engineering and Operations for Constant Contact. Before Constant Contact, he was SVP of Engineering and Operations for Ecora Software, VP and GM of Product Operations of Saba Software following its acquisition of Centra Software where he was SVP, Products and Operations.

Dora Vell
