Cisco Appoints Well-known Former Government Official to Board

Cisco appointed Dr. Kristina M. Johnson, Ph.D., 54, CEO of Enduring Energy, to its Board. Dr. Johnson most recently served as Under Secretary of Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy before joining Enduring Energy. Prior to joining the Department of Energy, Dr. Johnson served as Provost and VP for Academic Affairs at Johns Hopkins University and Dean of the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University. In addition to her academic career, she is an inventor and entrepreneur, holding over 45 U.S. patents (129 U.S. and international patents) and co-founder of several successful companies including, ColorLink.

EMC Hires Former CIA Director to Board

EMC named Jami Miscik, 54 to its Board. Ms. Miscik is President and Vice Chairman of Kissinger Associates and former Deputy Director for Intelligence at the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). She joined Kissinger Associates in 2009, and has been a Senior Advisor on Geopolitical Risk to Barclays Capital since 2009. She was Global Head of Sovereign Risk at Lehman Brothers from 2005-2008 and served at the Central Intelligence Agency from 1983-2005, rising to become the Deputy Director for Intelligence. Ms. Miscik is a member of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board, a Director on the Council of Foreign Relations, Vice-Chairman of The American Ditchley Foundation, and a Trustee of In-Q-Tel.

Social Media Company Appoints Tech Sales Expert and Manta CEO to Board

Manta President and CEO Pamela Springer is joining the board of directors of FlyMuch - maker of the location-based monitoring and engagement service VenueSeen. Springer is also investing in the company to help VenueSeen accelerate customer acquisition and partnership expansion. Ms. Springer has been the President and CEO of Manta Media since 2004. Before that she served as VP of Sales and Marketing of LeadScope, VP of Sales for ECNext, VP North American Sales, Interliant, VP Sales, reSOURCE PARTNER, VP Sales, Litton Enterprise Solutions, and VP Sales, Metatec. She also serves as Director of JobsOhio, and as the chairwoman of the Software Industry and Information Association (SIIA) Content Division.

Former Intuit and IBM Exec Joins Analytics Software Company’s Board

Analytics software company FirstRain named Nora Denzel, 49, to its Board of Directors. Ms. Denzel brings more than 25 years of technology and leadership experience to the FirstRain Board. Most recently, Ms. Denzel was SVP for Big Data, Social Design and Marketing at Intuit, where she was responsible for establishing, directing and implementing Intuit's data strategy and central marketing programs. Prior to Intuit, she was SVP of Hewlett-Packard's global software business, served as SVP of product operations at Legato Systems (acquired by EMC) and held several engineering, marketing and executive positions during 13 years at IBM. Ms. Denzel serves on the Board of Directors of Saba and Overland Storage.

Digital Veteran Joins Online Media Company’s Board

XO Group, the online media technology company with its sites like The Knot, appointed Liz Schimel to its Board of Directors. Liz is EVP and Chief Digital Officer of the Meredith National Media Group, a division of Meredith Corp. Ms. Schimel served as the Head of Global Music and Connected Entertainment of Nokia since 2008,  SVP of Content Development for Online division of Comcast since 2005,  VP of consumer business development at AT&T Wireless Services, where she led the content strategy and execution of new business initiatives for wireless Internet portal and messaging applications. She served as SVP and Director of Business Development, SoundView Technology. Prior to SoundView she worked for BMG Entertainment in several different positions, including VP and General Manager for BMG Online and BMG Entertainment. She also served as VP and General Manager at GetMusic.com, and as Director of Electronic Media Development and Director of Marketing for the electronic publishing division of Bantam Doubleday Dell (now Random House).

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
