EMC reshuffles executive ranks with new CEO at VMware

Pat Gelsinger, 50, who was President and COO of EMC Information Infrastructure Products, becomes CEO of 80%-owned VMware effective September 1. He also joins the VMware board. Prior to joining EMC in 2009 he was SVP and Co-GM of Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group. Before that he led Intel Labs and was Intel's first CTO.

Current VMware CEO Paul Maritz, 56, moves to EMC as Chief Strategist and Vice Chair, reporting to CEO Joe Tucci. He also keeps his VMware board seat. Maritz will focus on defining EMC’s strategy for products related to Internet-based cloud systems and handling massive amounts of data. He was appointed CEO of VMware in 2008 after EMC acquired PI Corp, the company he founded in 2003.

Dave Goulden, 52, CFO at EMC, also becomes President and COO of the company. Before being named as CFO he served as EVP of BD, Customer Solutions and Marketing, EVP of Global Marketing and BD and EVP of Customer Operations. Prior to EMC, he was President and COO for the Americas and Asia Pacific at Getronics.

Jeremy Burton, 44, now Chief Marketing Officer, will be EVP, Product Operations and Marketing. Prior to joining EMC, he was CEO-Serena Software, Group President-Security and Data Management BU of Symantec, EVP-Data Management Group and CMO at VERITAS Software, SVP-Product and Services Marketing at Oracle.

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults, garage.ca, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
