Most important hiring and departures from June 11 to August 25, 2017

Several technology vendors announced changes to their board of directors in the said time period. We have tried to capture the most important and interesting ones, categorizing them under few noticeable patterns. 

Chairman Changes

  • Cerner Announces New Chairman after Sudden Demise of Chair/CEO Neal Patterson. Jason ChenCerner announced that Neal Patterson, chairman and CEO, passed away on July 9, 2017, at 68 years of age, due to unexpected complications that arose after a recent recurrence of a previously disclosed cancer. Cerner Co-Founder and Vice Chairman of the Board Cliff Illig, 66, has been named chairman and interim CEO.
  • IDT Appoints Board Member Ken Kannappan as Chairman. Kannappan has served on IDT's Board since January 2015, after previously serving in the role of IDT Board Chairman from 2000 to 2008. John Schofield has resigned as Chairman in anticipation of his upcoming retirement. 
  • Acer Combines Chair-CEO Roles. Jason Chen was named Chairman in addition to his continuing role as CEO. George Huang steps down from the chairmanship but remains on the Board. Chen joined Acer in January 2014 as Corporate President and CEO.

TCS Independent Director Retires from Board 

Tata Consultancy Services said independent director Vijay Kelkar has stepped down from the board upon reaching the retirement age set by the IT services company. Kelkar, a Padma Vibhushan award winner, is an Indian economist and academician. He has been on the board of TCS since 2010. 

 

Kleiner Perkins’ Chief Product Officer Resigns from Amazon BoardWilliam B. Gordon

William B. Gordon, 66, resigned as a director of Amazon after fourteen years on the board. Gordon stepped down so he could provide consulting services to the company for two years. Gordon is currently the Chief Product Officer at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Bing also leads KPCB’s sFund, the investment initiative to fund and build applications and services that deliver on the promise of the social web.

Cisco Systems Appoints Allergan Chair/CEO to its Board of DirectorsBrenton L. Saunders

Cisco Systems appointed Brenton L. Saunders, 47, Chairman, CEO and President of Allergan, to its Board of Directors. He was a co-founder of Health Care Compliance Association in 1995. He has significant healthcare industry expertise and led various business transformations and integrations.

Texas Instruments Appoints Lennox International Chair/CEO as Board MemberTodd M. Bluedorn

Texas Instruments announced that Todd M. Bluedorn has been elected to the company's board of directors. Bluedorn is chairman of the board and CEO of Lennox International. Before joining the company, Bluedorn, held a number of senior management positions at United Technologies Corporation, including president of three different businesses.

Broadcom Announces Board Changes   Check Kian Low

American fabless semiconductor company Broadcom appointed Check Kian Low as an independent director of the company and as the company's required Singapore resident director. Low will replace Lucien Y.K.  Wong as a director on the Board, whose previously announced resignation from the Board. Low, 57, was one of the founding partners and a director of NewSmith Capital Partners.

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Jae-Yong Lee Joins Board

Samsung Electronics approved the nomination of Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong to the electronics giant's board of directors. The approval enables the 48-year-old Lee, the only son of the ailing Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Kun-hee, to more actively participate and take formal responsibility in the company's important decision-making. The younger Lee joined Samsung Electronics in 1991.

Amazon.com Appoints Founding Dean and Vice Provost of Cornell Tech as DirectorDaniel P. Huttenlocher

Amazon.com elected Daniel P. Huttenlocher as a director of the company. Huttenlocher has been founding Dean and Vice Provost, Cornell Tech at Cornell University since 2012, and has worked for Cornell University since 1988 in various positions. Huttenlocher has served as a director of Corning since February 2015.

Alphabet Appoints Well-known Economist and Former TIAA CEO to Board

Alphabet appointed Roger W. Ferguson, Jr., 64, to its Board of Directors. Ferguson is a respected leader in the economics and finance industries. Ferguson has served as the President and CEO of TIAA since April 2008. He joined TIAA after his tenure at Swiss Re, where he served as Chairman of the firm's America Holding Corporation, Head of Financial Services, and a member of the Executive Committee from 2006 to 2008. 

AT&T Appoints Redpoint Ventures Co-Founder to its Board of Directors  Geoffrey Yang   

AT&T has appointed Geoffrey Yang, 56, to its Board of Directors. Geoff co-founded Redpoint in 1999 and has backed trailblazing consumer Internet companies from the earliest stages that include Ask Jeeves, Excite, MySpace, and TiVo. He has been involved in Redpoint’s investments in Arista, Bluefin, Calix, Efficient Frontier, Foundry, Juniper Networks, and Victorious. He was previously a member of the President’s Information Technology Advisory Committee and the advisory council for the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He currently serves on the board of Electric Imp, Machinima, Scribd, TasteMade, Tidemark, and Vurb.
