Welcome to our Technology CEO Transitions Newsletter.

We endeavor to catalog all open technology CEO roles (as of 9/30/2017) and latest appointments for the month of September 2017.  

The average length of time the searches are open is 4.09 months, up from 2.97 months earlier this year. There is little variance across geographies.

 

Did you know?  Trends in Technology Board Appointments

Deloitte went through the S&P 500 board appointments, that had technology as a primary competence. Here are the themes.

- Security & Privacy – 47.9%
- Analytics & Data – 32.4%
- Cloud – 17.6%
- Digital Transformation -13.6%
- ERP – 7.2% 

Harvard did another study on over 7000 public companies and came up with a longer list. Happy to share these conclusions, and some Vell stats.

By the numbers, overall:

Total Open CEO Roles:  41  
New CEO Appointments: 34 CEOs (2 women or 5.9%, 32 men).

Note: since the start of the month, one interesting development of note, not included in this month's stats:  Joe Cowan is stepping down as CEO, Epicor and remains on its board. Stephen Murphy, former President at Open Text is named CEO.

New Tech CEO Openings: 7 – Equifax (GA), Finisar Corporation (CA), Arcserve (USA) (MN), BPS Technology (Australia), Blancco Technology Group (GA), Ancestry.com(UT), Social Finance (CA).

CEOs Appointed – Sources 

Overall

15% of the CEOs appointed were COOs or President or EVP - Operations, 9% were current board members, CFOs were 6%, 23% other internal executives and 47% external appointments.

Diversity: 2 (5.9%) CEOs out of 32 total CEOs appointed were women.

The two longest CEO searches started in June and September 2016.

Cerner Corporation, Missouri, July 2017 - Cerner Chair & CEO passes away. Vice Chair & Founder Cliff Illig  named Chair & iCEO.

HSN, Florida, April 2017 - CEO Mindy Grossman has resigned. The Board has established an Office of the CEO.

Lexmark International, Kentucky, June 2017 - President and CEO David Reeder has resigned for personal reasons. In the interim, Lexmark will be led by a management team consisting of Brock Saladin, SVP and chief revenue officer, and Allen Waugerman, SVP and CTO.

Equifax, Georgia, September 2017 - Chairman and CEO Richard Smith would step aside following massive data breach. Paulino do Rego Barros Jr. named interim leader as the board searches for a successor.

Nuance Communications, Massachusetts, November 2016 - Chairman and CEO Paul Ricci intends to retire at the end of first half of fiscal 2018.

John Wiley & Sons, New Jersey, May 2017 - President & CEO Mark J. Allin resigned. Chairman Matthew S. Kissner is now Interim CEO.

Finisar Corporation, California, September 2017 - Finisar Corporation announced that Chairman and CEO Jerry Rawls has informed the board of directors that he intends to retire as CEO of the company by the end of calendar year 2018.

Syniverse, Florida, August 2017 - Syniverse's President and CEO Stephen C. Gray retires in 2018. Gray will remain as CEO until the completion of the search process.

TiVo, California, May 2017 - President and CEO, Thomas Carson, intends to retire.

Ellucian, Virginia, July 2017 - Ellucian President/CEO Jeff Ray has retired. The company is in search for its next CEO. 

GlassBridge Enterprises (fka Imation), Minnesota, February 2017 - CFO Danny Zheng is serving as Interim CEO until the company Board appoints a new CEO. 

Brightcove, Massachusetts, July 2017 - Cloud video platform Brightcove's President and COO Andrew Feinberg, is iCEO.

Marchex, Washington, October 2016 - Pete Christothoulou resigned as CEO in October last year. 

Edgewater Technology, Massachusetts, March 2017 - Chairman Jeffrey L. Rutherford is Interim President and CEO. 

Quarterhill (fka Wi-LAN), Ottawa, Canada, April 2017 - Shaun McEwan, CFO, will become Interim CEO. 

Numerex, Georgia, January 2017 - Numerex terminated the employment of Marc Zionts as CEO. CFO Kenneth Gayronis interim CEO.  

Support.com, California, October 2016 – Dr. Elizabeth M. Cholawsky as president and CEO. Richard Bloom is iCEO.

Apivio Systems, BC, Canada, May 2017 - Apivio Systems appointed Ms. Elizabeth Park as interim President and CEO.

Blancco Technology Group, Georgia, September 2017 - Pat Clawson, CEO, has decided to step down. Interim CFO Simon Herrick, will become CEO on an interim basis.

Sierra Monitor, California, May 2017 - Sierra Monitor appointed Gordon Arnold as interim President and CEO.

Brekford, Maryland, November 2016 - Brekford entered into a separation agreement with C.B. Brechin, the company's CEO and CFO. 

Digiliti Money, Minnesota, August 2017 - Jeffrey Mack has resigned as President and CEO. EVP & CFO, Bryan Meier, will assume the position of interim CEO.

MMRGlobal, California, June 2017 - Robert H. Lorsch, Chairman, President and CEO of the company, died unexpectedly.

Lavu, New Mexico, June 2016 - Marc Chesley has stepped down as the CEO of Lavu. 

INTREorg Systems, Texas - June 2017 - David M. Beach tendered his resignation as president, CEO and a director. 

International Card Establishment, California, July 2017 - Payment company International Card Establishment appointed Kelani Long iCEO & Director.

Tinder, Texas, July 2017 - Greg Blatt will stay on as CEO of Tinder until a replacement is named. 

Kickstarter, New York, July 2017 - Kickstarter co-founder Yancey Strickler is stepping down as CEO of the innovative crowdfunding company later this year. Kickstarter is now actively looking for a replacement.

Ancestry.com, Utah, September 2017 - Ancestry.com CEO Tim Sullivan is stepping down. CFO and COO Howard Hochhauser will assume the role of interim CEO as the company conducts a search for a permanent replacement. 

Social Finance, California, September 2017 - CEO Michael Cagney will be stepping down at the end of the year.

Europe, Middle East & Africa

Dustin Group, Sweden, June 2017 - CEO Georgi Ganev, 41, will resign from Dustin Group, the leading re-seller of IT-products and additional services in the Nordics, to join as CEO of Kinnevik. Ganev will remain as CEO during his six months’ notice period.

Softcat Plc, UK, May 2017 - Martin Hellawell has decided to step down as CEO once a successor is in place at the IT infrastructure provider.

Pricer AB, Sweden, April 2017 - CFO Helena Holmgren, 41, has been appointed acting CEO until a new CEO has been recruited at the leading company in providing in-store digital shelf-edge solutions.

Avanti Communications, United Kingdom, August 2017 - CEO David Williams is stepping down. Alan Harper, currently a board non-executive director who joined in March 2017, who will assume the role of interim CEO.

Brady Plc, UK, September 2016 - After nine years at the commodity trading software company, CEO Gavin Lavelle, 57, has decided to pursue new opportunities. Ian Jenks will assume operational control of the company as executive chairman. 

1Spatial, UK, December 2016 - Claire Milverton, 42, CFO, is interim CEO at the company which is a leader in managing geospatial, gis & spatial data. 

Asia Pacific

Infosys, India, August 2017 - Vishal Sikka, 50, has resigned as the MD and CEO of Infosys over differences with the founders on governance issues. COO UB Pravin Rao, 55, has been appointed as the interim CEO. Infosys appointed Egon Zehnder to help find Vishal Sikka's successor.

BPS Technology, Australia, September 2017 - Trevor Dietz, CEO of BPS, has advised the board of his intention to retire in the new year.

RapidCloud, Malaysia, March 2017 - The Board has appointed Chew Man Fai, 42, Executive Director, as interim CEO. The company has stopped trading on AIM. The company is a enterprise cloud computing services and web-solutions provider for Southeast Asia.

Tomizone, New Zealand, July 2017 – Business Intelligence HCM software company Tomizone CEO Geoff Wanless, 55, will step down from the role due to the changing nature and restructuring of the business.

j2 Global, California - CEO of Ziff Davis LLC Vivek Shah to serve as the new CEO and Board Member. 

Yellow Pages Limited, Quebec, Canada - Yellow Pages Limited appointed Board Member David A. Eckert as President and CEO. Mr. Eckert has served as CEO of international companies in a wide range of industries over the course of his 35-year career. 

CPI Card Group, Colorado - CPI Card Group appointed Director Scott Scheirman as President and CEO, succeeding Steve Montross. Former CFO of Western Union. 

EDM America, Pennsylvania - Scott Byers will resign as CEO of EDM Americas. Group CFO Jimmy Eyerman takes over as CEO. 

Triad Digital Media, Florida - Triad Retail Media announced Sherry Smith, Global Chief Customer Officer, as its new CEO. 

Mesa Laboratories, Colorado - COO Gary M. Owens has been approved unanimously by Mesa’s Board as President and CEO. 

Webroot, Colorado - Cisco exec Mike Potts is now CEO and a member of the Board. 

Reed Group, Colorado - ReedGroup named Scott Larsen as CEO of the company. Previously VP, Group Claims for The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America (Guardian), ReedGroup parent company. 

LiveOps, Arizona - Liveops named COO Greg Hanover as the company's new CEO. 

Solace Systems, Ontario, Canada - Leslie (Les) Rechan, former President and CEO at Halogen Software, will join as President and CEO. 

DoubleDutch, California - DoubleDutch promoted COO Bryan Parker to CEO. 

Excel Corporation, Texas - Joni R. Floyd joined as the company’s President and CEO. Fomer MD of Raven Partners. 

Identity Theft Guard Solutions, Oregon - ID Experts announced that Thomas Kelly will become president and CEO, replacing Robert Gregg. Kelly was most recently CEO of AccelOps. 

Telvent DTN, Nebraska - Kip Pendleton, SVP-Agriculture, will replace Ron Sznaider as CEO. 

Curvature, California - Exec Chair Peter Weber named as new CEO. Previously, he led Carpathia. 

OpenLink Financial, New York - Openlink Financial announced that CTO Rich Grossi has been promoted to CEO. 

WSO2, California - Toba Capital partner and former Codenvy CEO Tyler Jewell joined as CEO and director of the board. 

Kalmbach Publishing, Wisconsin - Kalmbach Publishing hired media veteran Dan Hickey as its new CEO. 

ProfitKey International, New Hampshire - ProfitKey International named Randy Keith, as CEO and president. Most recently, he served as president and COO of Data Centric. 

Aetion, New York - Carolyn Magill has been appointed as CEO of the company. Former CEO of Remedy Partners. 

Nova Communications, Ottawa, Canada - Joseph Hickey, the founder and majority shareholder of acquiring company Rock Networks, has been appointed as the new President and CEO of Nova Communications. 

Optanix, New York - Mike Crest joined as CEO. Comes from Arcserve, a leading provider of data protection and availability solutions. 

Shiftgig, Illinois - LinkedIn veteran Wade Burgess joined as CEO. 

AristaMD, California - Brooke LeVasseur, previously chief business officer, promoted to CEO. 

WidePoint Integrated Solutions Corp, Virginia - SVP, Operations Todd Dzyak promoted to President and CEO.

Micro Focus International plc, United Kingdom - Micro Focus merged with Hewlett Packard Enterprise's software business. Chris Hsu, formerly COO of HPE and EVP and GM of HPE Software, was appointed CEO of Micro Focus. 

Solocal Group, France - Eric Boustouller is now CEO of SoLocal Group. Former Corporate VP of Microsoft and Western Europe area VP of Microsoft. 

Cambridge Consultants, United Kingdom - COO Eric Wilkinson has been appointed CEO. 

Digital Route, Sweden - DigitalRoute has named CFO Andreas Zartmann its CEO. 

Cxense, Norway - Christian Printzell Halvorsen has been hired as new CEO. Christian has long experience from both technology and relevant markets.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents.
