Companies Rush to Name CIOs/CTOs/ CISOs/ Heads of Data - 87 Appointments & 46 Open Roles

Welcome to the Vell Leadership Update 47th monthly edition, for the 31 days ending August 15, 2017.

We’ve seen a lot of shakeups this past month, as 87 new heads of technology have stepped up, including new CTOs, CIOs, tech & ops execs and CISOs. Quite a few new tech executive roles have opened up, as well.

Following is an overview of this month’s trends....  

By the numbers, overall:

     Total Tech Exec Roles Open: 46
     New Tech Exec Appointments: 87 (in 81 companies, as 6 companies have multiple appointments) - 9 women or 10%, 78 men

New Tech Function Openings: 3 – Autodesk (CA), Shutterstock (NY), and United States Department of Homeland Security (Washington, D.C.).

Sources of Appointments: 59 were External appointments, and 28 were internal promotions. 

Other titles (internal sources) include: SVP or VP, Technology, VP-Business Transformation, VP-R&D, Founder, Director or Senior Director of IT, etc. 

Diversity: 10% of the appointments are women tech execs.

Autodesk, California, July 2017 - Amar Hanspal, 54, SVP, chief product officer and interim co-CEO, has decided to leave the company.

Saia, Georgia - $1.2B, June 2017 - Mark H. Robinson, VP and CIO, decided to retire from the trucking company. 
 
Saia, Georgia, July 2017 - Brian Balius, 56, VP Transportation and Engineering, informed Saia, the trucking company, of his plans to retire after 28 years of service with Saia.

United States Department of Defense, Washington, D.C., January 2017 - Terry Halvorsen, who as the Pentagon’s CIO, retired. Current principal deputy CIO, John Zangardi, is expected to step in as acting CIO.
 
United States Department of Homeland Security, Washington, D.C., August 2017 – CIO Richard Staropoli has resigned after only three months on the job. Deputy CIO Stephen Rice will serve as acting CIO until President Trump appoints a new person to fill the role.
 
NASA, Washington D.C., May 2017 - Michael Witt, who joined NASA in February, will become acting senior agency information security officer, replacing Jeanette Hanna-Ruiz. 
 
comScore, Virginia, June 2017 - Cross-platform measurement company comScore announced a reorganization of its technology and product teams into a unified group reporting to the Company’s Chief Operating Officer Cameron Meierhoefer. In connection with the reorganization, the Company’s CTO, Michael Brown, 45, will step down.
 
University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma, June 2017 - Oklahoma Eddie Huebsch has been named interim CIO at the University of Oklahoma. Huebsch has served OU IT for more than 16 years in a variety of leadership roles, most recently as associate VP of technology advancement.
 
Space Systems Loral, California, June 2017 - Paul Estey has been appointed EVP and Chief Operating Officer at SSL. Dr. Paul Estey joined SSL in 1997. He currently serves as EVP, Engineering and Operations.

TE Connectivity, Switzerland - $14.26B, October 2015  - EVP and CTO, Robert Shaddock, retired from the Company effective late 2016.
 
Criteo SA, France - $1.62B, November 2016 - Romain Niccoli resigned as Chief Product Officer effective December 31, 2016. He will serve the company in a consulting role for a period of time following his resignation.

Intel, California - Intel’s acquired Mobileye, the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving tech company. Mobileye will remain headquartered in Israel and led by Prof. Amnon Shashua, 57, who will serve as Intel SVP and Mobileye CEO and CTO.
 
Cisco Systems, California - David Goeckeler, SVP and GM of Networking and Security, has been promoted to EVP, Networking and Security.
 
General Dynamics, Virginia - M. Amy Gilliland will succeed S. Daniel Johnson as President of General Dynamics IT. Johnson will continue as EVP of the Information Systems and Technology group, a position he has held since 2015. Gilliland has been the Deputy for Operations for General Dynamics IT since April 2017.
 
Hormel Foods, Minnesota - Hormel Foods appointed Dial Corporation and Clorox exec Stephen Koven as VP of digital experience.
 
The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Ohio - Cleveland Clinic appointed Edward Marx as CIO. Most recently EVP at the Advisory Board Company, providing IT leadership and strategy for NYC Health + Hospitals.
 
Campbell Soup Company, New Jersey - Campbell Soup Company appointed Shakeel Farooque to the newly created role of VP and Head of Digital and E-Commerce. Former SVP of e-Commerce at Kohl’s.

Amobee, California - Amobee appointed Shouvick Mukherjee as CTO. Most recently VP of Product and Engineering for @WalmartLabs, and previously the VP of Engineering at Yahoo.
 
Exostar, Virginia - Exostar hired Dipto Chakravarty as its CTO. Comes from CA Technologies, where he was SVP and GM of its core security IAM BU.
 
WPEngine, Texas - WP Engine appointed Lee McClendon to SVP of Global Engineering. Former Group VP of Engineering at SolarWinds.

Kroll, New York - Kroll named William (Bill) Dixon as an Associate MD in its Cyber Security and Investigations practice. Most recently, Dixon was VP, Cyber Resilience with Stroz Friedberg.

Dora Vell

Dora Vell is the Managing Partner of Vell Executive Search, a boutique executive search firm in Boston focused on recruiting technology executives and board members. Vell has successfully completed numerous board member and C-level executive searches, including CEOs, COOs, CIOs, and Vice Presidents - at both public and private companies.

Prior to founding the firm in 2005, Vell was a Partner at Heidrick & Struggles' Technology practice for seven years.  Before her career in executive search, she worked at IBM for 11 years, managing software engineering organizations of 100 people and software sales organizations with revenues of $150 million. She has also served as an executive assistant to the CEO of IBM Canada for one year.

Vell holds seven worldwide software patents. She has published several Business of Leadership reports on governance and leadership and has been quoted in numerous articles including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Agenda Week, MSNBC, Mass High Tech, the OPUS for the World Economic Forum, Boston Business Journal, The Globe & Mail, CIO Magazine, and IEEE. She also has been a featured speaker on leadership at numerous conferences and at Columbia University's MBA program.

Vell is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the Boston CEO Roundtable. She has served on the boards of Framingham State, Entrepreneur's Organization, Goodwill, Mary Centre for developmentally handicapped adults, garage.ca, and RBC Capital Partners.

She has received an MBA from the University of Toronto, a Master in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor in Computer Science from Carleton. She has also completed the MIT Entrepreneurial Master’s program.
